It's funny how we all watch the game and come away with diff observations . I guess it's all about expectations, but I thought the kid looked ok.
He got lost in coverage a few times but I was most impressed with his tackling

Yeah, tackling seems to be the one things he's done consistently this camp.

If a CB does not tackle he won't play much for Marinelli.

Ronde Barber had a lot of tackles and not because he was getting burned.

Deion Tackles:
2005 27
2004 8
2000 37
1999 39
1998 22
1997 30
1996 29
1995 24
1994 34
1993 20
Average: 27 per season, 0.9 per game

Ronde Barber Tackles:
2012 92
2011 79
2010 82
2009 77
2008 75
2007 58
2006 98
2005 99
2004 98
2003 97
2002 79
2001 71
Average: 84 per season, 5.2 per game

I got maybe a stupid question if there is 16 games in a season and Deion averaged 27 tackles a year how did he average 0.9 tackles a game?

Good observation. That was a cut and paste error. It is actually 2.09 tackles per game played. He did not play 16 games every season (129 games played from 1993 to 2005 with 270 total tackles).

I don't know why the logic is that elusive.

If a CB gets beat on 7 pass plays, but tackles his man after the catch 5 of those times...he will *appear* to be quite the stud the next day for someone who wasn't watching the game.

Yes it's a nice bonus if a cornerback is a bold, fundamentally sound tackler, but that's the best way to describe it: a bonus. Smothering the passing play and coming up with an occasional INT is what cornerbacks get paid to do.

Your tackle stats above w/Deion only prove my point: Deion probably had the lowest tackle total per game of any CB in the history of the game---yet he is considered one of the top 5 CBs to ever play.

You seem to think that the only time a CB makes a tackle is when his receiver catches the ball. CBs also make tackles in the running game. Deion was allowed to avoid the running game for the most part but most CBs don't get to do that, not even Revis.

Ronde Barber racked up high tackles because he was strong against the run, not because he was getting beat at a high rate.

OP - I got what you meant from the "get-go". Unfortunately, we have a lot of posters on this site who got caught at the wrong time of the month with no tampons. In the literal sense of the word, he won't be redshirted, but I understand that you weren't being literal - just using that term in absence of anything else.

Of course, I don't think he'll "redshirt", either. But I do think Garrett and Marinelli will play the best players. And right now, Byron Jones is # 4 on the depth chart for CB. He will play and contribute, but for the time being, he's going to be the "dime" back when the Cowboys go with 6 DBs, as well as him getting occasional work at safety in certain packages.

Thank you for this post. Means a lot to me since I've otherwise regretted this thread.

He's the dime safety, exactly what this team needs and what he was drafted for. Eventually, he's the starting free safety, I think.

I love his range when playing FS, but right now he looks more natural playing CB. And with his athleticism I feel like he can join to the hip of any WR and run with them.

But right now, he's the fifth corner.

To clarify - by redshirt I mean leave him lower on the depth chart. Right now he is being outplayed by both White and Patmon.

I think his shoulder injury has something to do with it.

I didnt realize he had that injury in his last year of college.

So with losing Scandrick..

my guess is they want to not force him too much and let him get healthy before the bullets fly.

I like him and obviously he has future in our secondary with all the questions about Carr and Claiborne.

Still wish we had taken a RB instead but..

Of course I don't think that. I already stated...run support from a corner is great.

But it's a bonus. The modern league is about passing and stopping the pass. That drives everything from salaries to roster decisions to strategy to popcorn sales. And when you are talking about a cornerback you are talking about a guy who is going to be judged and valued 90% on how he stops the pass.

Now a safety is a different animal in run support. He is both in the middle of the field and is also often the last line of defense. If he doesn't make a stop the result can be a long TD run.

As was mentioned earlier, he is a dime safety. Leave him there & let him grow. To take him completely out of the game plan for a full season would be a mistake. This kid is smarter than most, & obviously a superior athlete. We haven't had anyone in the secondary with his skills for quite a while.

Well..

Yes.

I just think it was what needed to be done..

and not nevessary at 27..

they could have traded back to early second round and taken a RB..

there were some guys available.

I still think Ray Rice is way more of a proven RB to pickup while its early and let Dunbar go.

Just get him incase.

No way does Dmac and Randle not miss games with injuries.

Dunbar scares nobody.

If Romo suddenly has to throw 40 times a game again to win..

and playaction passing is not there..

Romo gets stuffed and we are done.

Don't want to go there..that's all.
