He wasn't that bad at safety...yes, there were negative plays..

Back to back plays to be exact

On the short rushing TD, he failed to fill in run support and make a stop...he really failed to even get to the RB...looked hesitant asnif he was staying away from contact...plugged the wrong gap and never moved from there as the RB hit a different hole and scored easily...then on the following play he was beaten for 2 by the TE...

He did have one good tackle on a catch on 3 and medium to stop the TE shirt of the sticks to force a 4th down..

There was another play where he made a hit in the WR but didn't wrap up and bring him to the ground. Luckily someone else was there to finish it off, but overall he seems to need to work on technique. After seeing him at both I think he is a more natural CB than S at this stage.

Wondering this as well.
Eh...I went back and watched the second half, focusing on Jones. He did fine. Had a couple issues in run support, but he's a corner/free safety who is excellent in coverage so I'm not going to knock him on that.

unless you have no idea what redshirt means its your own fault you got worked for using it.

As there is no such thing as redshirt I the NFL, putting him low on the depth chart is the nearest equivalent. He will/should start the season as a STer and play limited snaps if any to begin with. Naturally through injury or his own improvement in practice he may see the field later on.

I think that, even with the injury to Scandrick, we have the luxury of developing Jones a while before asking him to play a ton. He struggled pretty hard yesterday, but rookie DBs typically do. I am fine with him being 4-5 on the depth chart to begin the season and slowly moving forward.

I was also really excited to see him at safety but after watching yesterday, I think he is much better suited to cornerback where he can use his athleticism to stay on a WRs hip. I worry about his tackling at safety to be honest.

Still love the player, but no doubt he looks green. Let's make sure we save him for the next 4 years too!

I do agree he should be a CB, that is where he is going to be his best.

once again you try and weasel out. Do you or do you not know what redshirt MEANS? If you do then you have to flat out admit you screwed up using it.

Mods please feel free to delete this thread since I used a term that wasn't as precise as it should have been and my clarifications don't meet burmafrds approval.

First round draft picks are expected to contribute, especially when your cornerstone CB is out for the year. It's a different story in the pros as compared to college, In the pros, first round picks get reps to develop properly. In the early going he may see limited time in the slot or at FS.

I'm expecting the team go go with Claiborne at corner and hope for the best until such time as he proves he's either able or unable to handle it. In the meantime, Byron Jones will be utilized, albeit somewhat sparingly, until he's reasonably comfortable and ready to step in. I believe he can handle it if called upon. He's considered anything but raw, even though he's a rookie.

To clarify - by redshirt I mean leave him lower on the depth chart. Right now he is being outplayed by both White and Patmon.

But thats not the known definition of "redshirt." I can understand the concept on not having him be the starting CB across from Carr. I'm fine with easing him in and generally letting the best player play. But using the phrase "redshirt" carries a clear meaning of just sitting him for a year and letting him learn.

It's like trying to say that I shouldn't eat hamburgers more than two times a week and using "vegan" to describe it.

If they redshirt a guy on the 53 it will be Gibson. An inactive all season long. And I expect that, the Broncos had him on the phone for free agency when the Cowboys drafted him. Some team might have a spot if the Cowboys don't.

It's week 3 of the PRE SEASON and you're making claims to redshirt our first round pick? Come on dude, you're better than that.

Rookies progress, and you don't hinder the progression by burying them on the depth chart.

You want this guy on the field when we're in zone coverage.

Make no mistake... This is a freak athlete and when he gets comfortable he'll cover a lot of ground and we'll be wanting him boosted up the depth chart.

Why do so many want to convert everyone to safety?

Bc the team hasn't had a legitimate coverage safety since this man retired:

The team hasn't drafted a FS since...unless you count the D2 Matt Johnsons', etc.

It's funny how we all watch the game and come away with diff observations . I guess it's all about expectations, but I thought the kid looked ok.
He got lost in coverage a few times but I was most impressed with his tackling

Cornerbacks don't get paid for tackling! Just look at HOF Deion Sanders. It's all about locking up your guy and preventing completions...grabbing INTs

In truth if you see a cornerback with a lot of tackles in a box score, it's almost always a really bad sign he was getting burned....and was forced into making tackles after his man was burning him for 20 yard completions.

I don't say this to critique Jones one way or another. I didn't watch the game. Just saying.
