Reducing Romo's turnovers has not equaled more wins

This "Romo Friendly" offense has cut Romo's turnovers almost in half this season compared to last season but the Cowboys currently have the same 8-5 record they had last year at this time. The reason our record is the same is because even though Romo isn't turning the ball over as much he isn't attacking as much down the field and as a result we're not scoring as many TD's. Add Folks missed FG's to the equation and you have less scoring. The Saints have scored 59 TD's compared to the Cowboys 35 TD's. Romo's turnovers are down but also are his TD passes. The Cowboys are obviously trying to protect Romo from turning the ball over but this has hurt his aggressiveness and our scoring. We're not seeing as many big scoring plays because our receivers aren't getting alot of separation and Romo fears making mistakes throwing into tight coverage. This team lacks quick strike ability that the top teams possess. The Cowboys were at their best winning 4 straight games when Romo was hitting Austin on big plays. The Cowboys keep shooting themselves in the foot with too many dumb penalties to control the ball on the ground plus Barber keeps getting little to nothing on first down.

Romo is trying to be careful with the ball by making short high percentage throws. Barber is fading because he's being misused. He was gaining more yards in 07 as a backup than he has as a starter. The Cowboys need to get a clue! Barber can't bulldoze defenders like he use to. Two years ago no one could keep him out of the endzone from a yard out now he gets knocked backwards on 3 straight carries from the one. In his prior role from 05 to 07 he scored 29 TD's now he's down to 11 TD's the past two seasons as a starter. Our WR's are still having trouble getting separation which has added to Romo's apprehension to throw passes over 6 yards. Dink and dunk! Hurd is a wasted roster spot having caught only 6 passes all season. Crayton has only produced 5 catches the past 4 games. This team needs some speed on the outside to help take some pressure off Austin and RW isn't that guy. Ogletree made a couple of nice plays against Philly and hasn't been seen since at WR. He's the fastest receiver on the team and the Cowboys need to shake things up because this team is not far from being on life support.

Teams that lose the turnover battle lose 80 percent of the time. Romo is doing what it takes to win. when are you people going to realize we have one of the best qbs in the history of the game? If this team wants to win they need to do two things ok..

1. On defense get off the field on third down.
2. On offense stop the penalties that's been stalling drives all season.

Interesting. I saw barber bulldoze a bunch of defenders sunday, he is looking like he has his power back in his legs again.

and just for reference, 2006 xmas day, nfc east on the line cowboys vs eagles at texas stadium. The cowboys and barber get stopped 4 times after 1st and goal and lose the game. We went up the middle and to the right behind rivera.

2005 at oakland, vs norv turner 4 tries and we couldnt get in, we went left behind adams and allen and it didnt work.

I think it has more to do with being tied for 2nd to last in all of the NFL with 16 takeaways.

Take a look how many NO has.

22 TD and 7 ints and people complain about it? Add to that 3 of those 7 ints came in week 2. He has thrown for 3,574 yards which is 9 yards less that Phillip Rivers. I really do not get it, Romo has shown some very good improvement in his play. Yes the team is 8-5 but the key word is team, Romo can only do so much.

I agree. Romo might be able to be more his free-wheeling, take-a-chance QB if the defense was better able to get some of the eventual Romo turnovers back and help out the offense.

But for a couple years now, the defense has been lousy at generating those turnovers, so Romo better be more careful with the ball.

just for fun I am uploading that goal line stand against philly. That game and the game sunday are almost mirror images.

Plus finishing 4th in the NFL in penalties.

There's a reason why we are among the league leaders in total yards but have so few points. We're easy to defend against. Pull the safeties deep. Don't let Austin behind you. Don't give up the big play. Let Dallas have to score through a prolonged drive. They may string a few plays together, but eventually they'll fumble, committ a stupid penalty, miss a blocking assignment, drop a 3rd down conversion and kill the drive before they get points out of it (and if you hold them to a field goal attempt, you've held them to nothing because the kicker can't make a field goal).

In summary, they don't have the discipline or attention to detail to keep from shooting themselves in the foot.

Amen Bro! Romo is not the problem with this team. I think his elevated play has just shed the light on the other problem areas of this team. He has done an outstanding job considering that many of his throws have been completed under duress. I think he's becoming smarter and I'm glad to see the development of his game.

I totally agree with both of your points, especially number two. I don't know how many times I've seen good drives stalled by stupid penalties. I'm sure that the loss of momentum in those situations has cost us some games, not to mention confidence.

I'm not saying Romo has been the reason for our December slide this year but we're churning out alot of yards and it's not equating into TD's. Romo's "stats" might be on pace with some of the best QB's in the history of the game but "he's" certainly isn't up there with them. He hasn't even led this team to a playoff win and can't win games in Dec-Jan. He's a LONG way from being one of the best QB's in history. He gets out dueled by every QB in big games. Even a rookie Joe Flacco outplayed him last year in Dec.

I'm not putting all this on Romo....read my post! I'm putting it on the coaches and some of the players around him. Romo is doing what he's being instructed to do and that's not to make mistakes.

He has put up TD 22 thus far is not a bad number. He is being more careful with the ball because turnovers will get you beat quickly. Romo is making plays his team for different reason has failed at times but again a QB can only do so much. He does not play defense or special teams.

Barber clearly doesn't look like the beast he was. He gets stuffed alot on first down and has been knocked backwards several times this season. He's only had one 100 yard game all season. In 06 the Cowboys weren't as good a team and were in the middle of complete meltdown when Barber got stuffed against Philly. I haven't been impressed with what I've seen of him this season. He looks no better than Troy Hambrick right now. I'm willing to wager the next head coach will not start him.

say what you want, but he ran over a number of defenders sunday in picking up first downs.

here is that drive against the eagles in 06 on xmas day. Notice the ridiculous play by romo on 4th down.

give it a sec, its transcoding.

I won't complain about Romo. He's having a solid year. But I do have one complaint. Not sure if its on Romo or Garrett or hell maybe its the personnel but i'd like to see us allow our receivers and Witten make plays on the football. I'd like to see more shots down field.
