Lions | Team not thinking Williams will contribute soon
Wed, 7 Jun 2006 19:49:51 -0700

Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports the Detroit Lions have made the decision that, until WR Mike Williams demonstrates a noticeable change in his behavior, and few in the organization are expecting anything to be any different any time soon, he will not be contributing to the franchise. Williams is currently running with the third-string offense. The team even has looked into the cost of ridding itself of Williams, but realized it cannot. If the Lions were to cut or trade Williams, they would be hit with a whopping $12 million salary cap charge. Unless Williams changes his attitude, his name will be expected to pop up often on the inactive list this season. The Lions have options at wide receiver, but right now, Mike Williams is not one of them.

Recall:

Last year before the draft, Cowboys fans were clamoring for Mike Williams, how that if he were there we couldn't pass him up. Parcells would be stupid not to take the next Michael Irvin, yada, yada, yada.

The guy is proving to be a big flop.

Posters are so enamored with sexy positions like receivers, they were convinced this guy was what we needed to give potency to our offense.

Boy, I'm glad the Lions' stupidity ended the controversy which would have erupted over us passing on him.

Of course, we got DeMarcus Ware. :D

Well I liked him in College and at THAT time would not have been upset if he fell to us and we took him.

But I am glad he did not and we did not now.

I am sure everyone has players they thought would do great or at least good in the pros only to see them flop.

Same could be said that many probably thought some guy in the draft would be a dud and turn out to be a great or at least good pro.

I liked him and still do as a talent, but I'd want his attitude changed.

Nobody knew about his attitude, but his weight issues were documented by Gosselin. Also, most people forgot he sat around without playing football for an entire year. There is no way I would take a player that high in the draft after that and factoring in his inexperience as well. He might come around, but he is certainly acting like an undisciplined kid. Being around Mariucci and his loose ship last year probably made things worse.

In fairness, we don't know that if he had come here under Parcells things would have worked out the same. Mariucci is (in)famous for running an extremely loose ship, which probably makes it much easier for kids like this to start heading in the wrong direction.

Then again, Bill's 'tight' ship didn't do much for Antonio Bryant either, so who knows.

it seems to me like the most successfull nfl recievers are the hardest working, jerry rice, owens., randy moss, hines ward, and chad jackson, to name a few. Looks like without a seriously change in attitude mike may be out of the nfl in a few years.

Didnt mel kiper have him as his best player in the draft?
well done mel

Oh come on Hos, let your Pac10 Blinders fall off :D That guy was a good talent for College Football only, Period. As Mike Mayock put very well during that draft, that guy never had the speed to suceed in NFL as WR. And his attitude doesn't help me either of course, but as TE he might have had some success :p:

I did. There were reports that he was never on time for practice and meetings. Sometimes Carroll would make him run the stands, but often times he just let it go since he was one of their best players.

I was more concerned about his inability to create good separation from defensive backs. In the college game he could get away with it because so many DB's in college are really small. Not the same way in the pro game.

That is what has suprised me about this thing.

We knew there was a weight and speed issue, how some thought he may be better suited as a TE.

But like you said I don't think many talked about him having an attitude problem.

I also don't remember anyone talking about his work ethic being bad at USC.

I was put off by the fact that he tried to come out early after the Clarrett Law Suit. He did so against all advice from his family, friends and coaches. That just threw up a red flag on the guy for me and I was relieved when Detroit took him so we didn't have to deal with it.

Sitting out a year really hurt him, threw off his timing and some of the instincts you have when you've been playing non stop up until the combine, then mini camp, training camp, etc. etc.

That really did not bother me.

He waited for the ruling and once it was OKed he declared, after that they changed the ruling but since he declared they would not let him back into USC.

Personally it may have been a bad decision on his part, but I don't think it raised any red flags to me.

IF he would have did it BEFORE maurice won that initial judgement I would have viewed it differently.

A lot of Commanders' fans were really pulling for Williams as well. Rogers definitley made his point last year, though. He was the right pick.

Then again, it wasn't difficult to be more productive than Williams, regardless of your position.

Same here. I don't hold it against a player for coming out early because often it is because they have issues at home than an NFL contract could help take care of.

Now was he foolish or probably advised poorly to follow the example of Clarett and challenge the NFL? Probably.

But to infer something about his character from that is crazy.

Has anyone in the history of the NFL gotten less out of 4 consecutive Top 10 picks than Matt Millen has out of Harrington, Rogers and Matt/Roy Williams brothers?

I wanted LB Derrick Johnson in last year's draft. I am rarely in favor of spending a 1st round pick on a WR and, while I liked Mike Williams when he was at USC, I certainly didn't want us spending a high pick on him.

BTW, Derrick Johnson did pretty good last year but I am not at all disappointed in Ware and am glad we got him.

I'd trade Ellis for him right now and roll the dice he pulls his head out.

I would trade Dexter Coakley for him, if he wants to play TE
