He's not getting $9M, or $30M over three years from Dallas. If that's what he thinks is on the table (and I don't think he does), he might as well sell the house and get a start on next season somewhere else.

I think he's going to find the market from contenders softer than he was probably counting on, and then we'll see if he wants to play for a contender at a discount or play for more money someplace else.

He is going for the money IMO, this is his "big" contract. But, there is good news for DeMarco, Indy has both the money and a contender.

I think the most Dallas should pay is 8 mil over 3 or 4 years. But that's really the max I would give any RB at all.

Anytime your team lacks outstanding money under the salary cap to afford resigning a league-leading RB, chances are he's gone. All any team can do in that position is make a "respectable" offer. We're limited, thanks to somewhat questionable signing practices committed in the past. Hopefully, those past mistakes won't be repeated. Very likely, Murray will choose to do what offers himself and his family the most generous contract. Who could fault him for that? It's his duty. The draft should provide a highly capable replacement.

Give me Melvin Gordon in the draft and the rest will be history......even if it costs us our 3rd rounder too

You all already know how I feel about Demarco. I want to see him remain here. That said, I understand the reality of the situation. while it does boil down to one big payday and taking care of your family, the bottom line is it's about whether or not he truly wants to remain a Cowboy.

If they offer him 8 mill per year for 3 or 4 years (which I consider very fair), and he takes it without delay, that says all we need to know about his desire to help finish what this team started.

If they offer that to him and he delays long enough to get to March 10th, good riddance to him. I wish him the best in Indy because that's where he will land. Then I look forward to seeing who we draft to replace him. I prefer Gurley over Gordon only because, as a huge Gamecocks fan who's best friend is a huge UGA fan, I have seen what Gurley can do up close and personal on multiple occasions. Assuming he's healthy, it's not even close. Gurley > Gordon

He's not coming back

Someone will pay him more than we will be willing to match

I'm to the point to where I hope so. Do not want to over pay a RB who still can't figure out how to hold the ball. It's not a freaking loaf of bread. That, and you fumble at the worst of times. Do you have a second gear?

Rant over.

Melvin Gordon is overrated. There's probably better running backs in the draft and in free agency.

The Cowboys utilized the franchise tag Monday onDez Bryant, leaving reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year DeMarco Murray's Dallas future up in the air.

Based on his understanding of Murray's situation, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport cautioned on Monday's edition of NFL Total Access that there's a "slim chance" Murray will return to Dallas once the free-agent market opens next week.

It's rare for a player of Murray's caliber to give his former team a chance to match a lucrative offer once the new team has the star in the building.

If Murray does defect from Texas, how would his market shape up in the era of the devalued running back?

Rapoport rattled off four teams as potential suitors:

1. Indianapolis Colts: General manager Ryan Grigson has $40 million to spend and a need at running back after swinging and missing on Trent Richardson. They are a lock to add a running back this offseason.

2. Arizona Cardinals: Like the Colts, the Cardinals have also been mentioned as a potential landing spot forAdrian Peterson. Arizona learned the hard way thatAndre Ellington isn't built for workhorse responsibilities.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars: Signed to take over the backfield a year ago, Toby Gerhart is now ticketed for a jack-of-all-trades role, including H-back responsibilities. Denard Robinson showed potential last season, but his boom-or-bust style is more suited to a complementary role. The Jags have more cap room than any other team.

4. Seattle Seahawks: The Seahawks will be in the market for a reliable veteran if Marshawn Lynch opts for retirement over a monster contract offer. That doesn't bode well for the enigmatic Christine Michael, who was relentlessly hyped as a potential difference-maker last offseason.

It's just business sense. When you have to pay Dez $$$$$$$ and you can replace Murray for pennies on the dollar with a second round pick RB, that's what you do. You get a productive back for 4 years at peanuts.

You simply cant have a $100 million QB, $100 million WR and spend money on a top back. Can't.

regardless, way too much is tied into incentives. has there ever been a contract signed where 90% of the base salary was incentives? I think not

I recall that Ricky Williams signed a deal that was almost entirely based on incentives. Don't recall specifics, but do recall that it was an incentive-based contract. Don't think there's been anything like it since.

If Demarco exits I am pulling hard for Dallas to grab Ajayi. They may have to move up in the third to grab him, but I currently think he would be there in round three.

Tevin Coleman would be a good pick also. Duke Johnson from Miami is also better than Gordon. If Gurley didn't have a major injury I would probably take him also.

It's about time...................... There are zero "givens" with acquiring AP. I'm sure the Boys and Vikings are secretly talking but there are ZERO givens.... Peanut gallery out.

Cowboys Director of Player Personnel Stephen Jones told Fox Sports' Mike Fisher that Murray is going to see what the open market is like and then talk with Dallas afterward. Jones added, "Deep-down he'd love to stay."

Ed Werder of ESPN reported that the Cowboys will make Murray a "respectable offer." Werder also reported that Dallas hopes Murray will give the team a chance to match any offers to the running back.

Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports broke down some estimates and other factors regarding Murray's contract situation, including the following:

More at the link.

If those are the numbers, don't let the door hit ya on your way out!

Agreed, but I think that's even more reason to believe it's the Colts that he ends up signing with.

If the Cowboys offer 4/28, he better take it and run. Anybody really think the Colts will offer 9 million per? I just don't trust even 1st round talent at the RB position. Even if they're taken in the 1st, they have yet to prove anything in the NFL. Much less 2nd or 3rd round guys. Replacing a guy in his prime that has all around talent with an older guy (Peterson) or a wet behind the ears rookie is more risky than re-signing Murray IMO.

No way I pay 8M a year for a RB. If the Colts do good luck and what a waste of money. Behind that OL, he will be lucky to get 1,200 yards. I don't care if they do have Luck, their OL is terrible.

Murray is a good running back who had a great season.

He's a 1,300-yard guy behind a 2,000-yard line.

Do not overpay him.

various... if Dallas is letting him test the market that is basically the opposite of making him a respectable offer.

they are doing one or the other. either trying to close the deal or letting him test free agency.

Dallas isn't giving Murray 30m over the first 3 years of any deal.
They'd play Ryan Williams before they did that.

What the Cowboys think is reasonable and what Murray feels he is worth are probably not that close.

I'm not sure why there seems to be this idea that if Dallas loses Murray it's because the team is being unreasonable. Both sides want to get the best deal possible, and neither wants to end up making the wrong deal.

Murray is right to seek what he can get, and Dallas is right to not just give him whatever it would take to keep him from doing that. You set parameters and stay within those parameters.
