Report: Dallas will make "respectable" offer to Demarco

This is the one thing that concerns me -- everyone talks about how little money FA running backs made last year but this is a new year. And given the success that teams like the Cowboys and Seahawks had running the ball, and how difficult it made those offenses to deal with, the running back position might be coming back in vogue in a big way.

I agree with you.

I consider "respectable offer" to mean "we will make a conservative offer so we can say we tried when he leaves."

I actually agree with the strategy. He has been injured all but one year. In that year we ran him like Earl Campbell way over the 300+ threshold. I think the Oline was always the key and other backs can fill in with us still being a balanced team. Love the guy and a great year but I don't mind the strategy.

other than injuries he's been steady since being in Dallas.
Career low 4.1
Career high 5.5
Career avg 4.8

huh? that's a pretty drastic difference.

Murray was a 75 yard per game type back for 3 years. Last year that went over 115....
That's a huge leap forward.

It is unrealistic to expect him to keep up that pace.
But at 85 yards per game he has value and is still really good.

First, I know this isn't a hockey forum but the story relates to Murray in a way.
I'm a NY rangers fan and one of our heart and soul players is Matt Zeccarello. He was going to be a FA this summer.
He's not the best wing in the NHL probably slightly above the middle of the pack. But he's a model teammate, coaches love him
and well respected by the front office.
He would have received tons of offers to play for other clubs but he resigned yesterday in NY. For what most analysts are saying 2 to 3 million
less. Because as he said last night, "we are a family here" and they were in the SCF last year and have a great shot again this year.
I'm hoping Murray feels the same way. The story is proof that some players do care about that ring and could offer a home town discount.
I'm hoping Murray is one of those guys. Zuccs teammates were thrilled to know he was staying.
I think more than a few Cowboys would be thrilled to keep Murray. We know JG and Romo would be.

Have to consider he wasn't always the starter and injuries. Point is he never fell off more than what I showed.
He was about the same average per carry no matter the oline. He gets yards on his own to.

They may have. We don't really know.
Unless you know something I don't know, they made a low ball 4 mil per offer. AKA disrespectful.
It would really be in our best interests to keep our core together and allow ourselves to focus on defense all throughout the draft.

Yep. I'd originally typed that it was in Murray's interest to get 'the most money possible,' and changed it for that very reason. Maybe, the best deal out there for him is what we're willing to pay for a good running back. Probably not, but there's a decent chance that's how it works out, at least. I'd say he's 2/3rds likely to be gone if I were pulling a number out of my Snyder. AZ or INDY or SEA make sense for him given what he reportedly is looking for.

I totally disagree that it's a disrespectful offer.

A 30% spread in average yards per carry is pretty large.
Going form 4.1 to 5.5 across even a 10 carry game is significant.

But again that is really not that telling.
Murray didn't get celebrated last year for a high yard per carry.
He was celebrated as a workhorse with huge yards rushing total and those numbers were both outliers of extreme proportions.

Assuming he is that guy for the next 3 or 4 years would be like believing in the boogeyman.

Murray is a RB and they seldom get paid massive deals so I am still hopefully he comes back but not at prices of 8 to 10m per year.

I like an incentivized offer

4m signing bonus, 800k base salary and 200k per game started= 8m for 2015
5m base plus 200k per game= 8.2m for 2016-18

Let either side walk away after every year

regardless, way too much is tied into incentives. has there ever been a contract signed where 90% of the base salary was incentives? I think not

I think you are missing the 4m signing bonus. This is his guaranteed salary for 2015.
His base would go up to 5m after year one.
That is less than 50% for the incentives.

I'm just trying to get Murray to stay in Dallas. If Indy offers 9m a year, at least Dallas can say they are offering 8m. It is better than the 4/16m rumored offer. If Murray has another 1500 yd 10+ TD year that is well worth the money.

1. I don't want to overpay for Dez...make him richer, but not the richest, imo.

2. I don't want to overpay for Murray...his 1800 yards and physicality will be missed, but he wasn't going to produce the same this season anyway. Everyone can be replaced...what you give up in the "dirty runs" you may make up with the break-away runs with someone else.

3. Dez isn't going anywhere...he's locked up...end of story except for trying to lower this year's cap hit....Murray should not be paid more than 5-6 million per year with modest guarantee. You just can't afford to put that much money is a workhorse RB...he's a sprained ankle away from being out several games, not even thinking about serious injuries. He is more valuable to us than to anyone else, but other teams are not going to let him leave and compare offers to Dallas...they will either offer something Jerry has already agreed privately is within his range or they'll offer a bigger contract and demand he sign it before leaving the facility. Either way, it won't crush us....this draft is deep in RBs, not to mention a glut in FA of guys who will later sign for less.

4. No way are there any talks between Dallas and Minny....we have no interest in trading for Peterson and taking on that contract. Peterson can force his way out simply by refusing to cut his salary...Minny will either pay him 13 million to play, or he'll be cut and talk to us about a team friendly contract. Personally, I don't see AP in Dallas next season.

Murray is probably the most easily replaced guy on the offense other than losing both RTs. We'll be okay, and there's always the chance that we actually improve with the right RB. We need to stick to the plan and focus the offseason on improving the defense....sign some free agents for insurance and then draft defense wisely.
