Every team passed on Montana. Even the team that eventually drafted him.

He was the top player on our board at the time, IIRC. They considered drafting him and didn't. The next pick he went to SF.

Boards are fluid. There is no rule that says you can't make last millisecond changes. And who knows, they may have put Manziel on the board as a diversion in case someone outside the club took a peak. Or just to please Jerry Jones. "Okay Mr. Jones, we have made Manziel the top player on the board. Now just sit here and sip on your juice and vodka."

So you scout players for a year, analyze, debate, build a board, and then change the board at the last minute?

Just because you have a player ranked higher doesn't mean you take him. Manziel would have caused the circus of the century and an unnecessary distraction for years to come.

Other teams were begging for us to take him and were disappointed that we actually made the smart pick vs. the popular one.

We have a ton of money tied to our starting QB who also happens to be a terrific player.

On top of that, we have far greater needs elsewhere that must be addressed if we want any chance at making noise in the immediate future.

What part of that is difficult to understand? It's not rocket science.

So did GB with Farve....If he is BPA you take him.

If QB isn't your 1st rd need why even rate for it. Downgrade for need. If you have a true board why not follow it? I didn't want Manziel but in about 2 years we are talking about the poopoo platter of NFL backups or teaching. I'm a wait and see guy on drafts so I refuse to downgrade our picks yet

I agree with you on taking the BPA but Favre was actually drafted by Atlanta (I think) and traded to the Packers.

Edit- I now realize you meant GreenBay drafting Favre 's replacement

And then we're probably going to have to give up draft picks if we want a qb of the same rank. We could have gotten him this year without the need for a future trade.

I am glad they didn't take him, but why do they not stick to the board?

I heard a radio broadcast the other day where McClay said the team doesn't strictly go BPA in the absolute manner that most posters refer to. Said they evaluate both BPA and need, and basically work to find the best match to help the team.

I'm paraphrasing of course.

How is quarterback not a need? Romo is at the end of the window. We're doubling down on the stupidity of his contract.

Let's separate the concept of "need" and the concept of "painted ourselves into a corner."

Somebody assured me the Manziel threads would stop after he was finally drafted. Talk about obsessed... he's not coming here, and he never was. He's gone to a place where he can play, not hold a clipboard and wear a visor. Be happy for the kid.

I heard this earlier today and it just got reported on The Ticket here in Dallas: Johnny Manziel was the higfhest-rated player on the Cowboys board when they drafted Martin. They skipped over him due to Romo.

Insane.

Could care less

35 years ago, we passed on a quarterback b/c we thought we were well situated at the position. That qb was Joe Montana.

Um .. Ok .. Along with every other team

Over 24 years ago 16 other teams passed on this little guy from Florida and said he was too small and lacked explosiveness.. One team even drafted the best supposed back from college in Blair Thomas...The cowboys dîdnt
He currently holds the NFL rushing record
His name is Emmitt Smith
Point being anyone can look back and pretend they knew and predict current and future on it .. But ya just can't

Its a news article claiming they didnt follow the board - Manziel is really secondary. If Garrapolo was rated higher - same thing
