this has got to be unreal.

Stupidest thing i've heard

if its true, this is gonna be like the d-league for the NBA. A bunch of nobodies playing in a game, to give themselves a chance in the NFL

The stadiums, quality of players, etc. will be inferior. People are already complaining about the watered down quality in the NFL.

The way I see it they should attack College football. Nothing ****** me off more than the stupid BCS bowl system. It's the main reason I don't really watch much college football. I'm all for anything that kills the college football system. Only because it is a greed based system.

DIE DIE DIE

I've always thought someone should start up a professional league and recruit players right out of high school. What kid wouldn't want hundreds of thousands of dollars to play football and not have to go to class? Some might prefer college, but a lot of the best players would choose to turn pro. And that would open the door for a lot of talented football players who aren't cut out for college.

Great point; remember how the XFL games were essentially held in high-school stadiums?

How is this league even going to compare, even when these two dude probably have more money than god? They are messing with a global monopoly here

That is a bit concerning but I don't think that will happen.

What's even more concerning is the ******** team names and uniforms that will be created. The NFL already has all the good ones.

Now UFL?

Everyone thinks they are Lamar Hunt, Ralph Wilson, and Al Davis, et al.

They aren't. Give it 2, maybe 3 years before it pushes up daisies.

Agreed 100%

If these guys were smart they would just do something more with the AFL, at least that is something that has shown some staying power as opposed to the others.

But I guess it is their money they are burning.

I think they are smart to avoid messing with the AFL. There are alot of folks out there like myself who would happily watch another league of real football in the spring, but avoid that cheap AFL crap like the plague.

I think the odds of another league making it are slim. The USFL had the big name player Steve Young, Hershel Walker, Reggie White, Jim Kelly as well as some other including former NFL players. They had owners with big pocket books like Donald Trump and a network agreement with ABC and ESPN. They also played during the summer months and had teams in cities that had no NFL team like San Antoine, Birmingham and Memphis. In the end they could not survive. I have nothing against someone trying to start a new league but I do doubt the main ingredient which is the die hard fan that it takes for franchise and the league to survive.

Any alternative to NASCAR and figure skating will be welcome on my tv. You know, they both do ovals so well.

If they are smart, then they would start the league much like the old AFL did in the 60s. Use castoffs and older named players who aren't going to make much in the NFL or would be just backups. Guys like Brad Johnson who would take the same money we are paying him but be a starter in that league.

The other thing that made them successful was drafting the same guys that the NFL did. Think about drafting guys like Steve Smith in their 1st round instead of the NFL second round or even a third or fourth round guy moving up a couple of rounds. Their cap could (and should) be the same so you know guys that the NFL didn't draft until late second or third getting picked in their first would most likely sign with the new league.

The trick for any business is to give the same impression as the competitor and not overpay for the big names like Peyton or LT or even a Tony Romo. Build stars of your own through the draft.

The next thing is to put teams where they ain't. San Antonio, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Birmingham, Portland, Salt Lake City, Hartford, Albuquerque, Norfolk, Springfield, Syracuse, Orlando, etc.; places where you could get a stadium that seats somewhere between 30000 and 50000 so that you have a chance to fill it. All of those places love football.

The problem with the USFL, XFL and some of the rest was going head to head with the big name guys or trying the spring thing. But it could work if they say play all Sunday night games or Sunday night and Saturday night during the fall.

Cuban is a extremely smart business guy and knows how to make things work so it will not surprise me to see it successful with him as an owner.

Looks like an NFL minor league to me.

Yep. Just another minor league farm system for guys who are looking to make a name for themselves in hopes of catching the eye of a potential NFL team.

The NFL is where it's at. It's the end all... be all!

Not surprising at all.

Perception is that NFL owners are making $$ hand over fist. With a salary cap in place that one assumes guarantees a certain level of profit, television & marketing $$ flowing more freely than ever, and no end in sight to the popularity of the game with fans, its no surprise that more folks want in on this.

The barriers to entry have been proven significant but the payoff appears enormous so the pursuit continues.

And I think that ultimately there are more than enough fans to go around if the product is of acceptable quality. Its not the loyalty of fans IMO that keeps rival leagues from catching on, its all the other economic challenges.

I can only imagine the windfall of bad press that would bring to the new league.

I agree. The NFL is where it is because of the fan loyalty. You have families who have followed their teams for years. Your fathers who watched the Cowboys and their sons became Cowboy fans and now their sons are Cowboy fans and you see that with many of the NFL teams in the league. I think any league who tries to compete with the NFL in any way shape or form will lose because the loyalties are too strong for NFL fans and their teams. How many around here when talking about the Cowboys use the words "We"? I see similar situation in MLB and the NBA die hard fans

I disagree I think if it came down the Jacksonville of the UFL or the Dallas Cowboys who are you going to watch? I know many like me who will make time for the Cowboys game but when the USFL was around I may watch it or not because the passion was not the same. What the NFL has built has taking place over many many years

The league intends to play its first preseason games in August of 2008.

And where will the league find the talent necessary to attract fans?

"(Former NFL coach) Bill Walsh used to tell me that the last 20 players cut from every team were almost interchangeable with the last 20 players to make the team," Hambrecht says.

I would think those last 20 players will go to training camp with an nfl squad, so this league will be getting the nfl's leftovers in September. (which should be better talent than what the UFL will be taking to camp) Building their squad with players that didn't go to camp with them is going to make for really sloppy play. That isn't going to work.

They should compete with College Football. IMO colleges will never pay athletes and the league would get a lot of good young players.

Im sure it will be equal to the bad press my local AA ballclub gets for playing 18 year olds.
