This Sunday marks the first time that new Washington offensive consultant Sherm Lewis will be paid to use his "extra set of eyes" to watch the Commanders play.

According to FOX's John Czarnecki, though, Commanders owner Dan Snyder already had another hire in mind during the season.

Czarnecki writes that "word has it" Snyder approached Mike Shanahan in the offseason to be his head coach and has already made another attempt during the season.

He was reportedly rebuffed both times.

Wow.

Snyder and the Commanders will eventually deny the report, because they don't have any other choice. But the news will likely reach coach Jim Zorn's ears, just like the reports from the Washington Post that Zorn would have been fired last season if the Commanders had lost to the Eagles in Week Sixteen.

Zorn has to feel that he is coaching on borrowed time, and it's fair to wonder how that affects the team he's leading.

Peter King said on TV that Shanahan wouldn't come in during the season, and would only accept the job if Vinny Cerrato is fired. No way Snyder fires Vinny though, so I don't see Shanahan coming here. I think he's overrated as a coach though, but it's still depressing that we'll never have a real GM.

well we can rule out Shanahan coming here too because King said Shanahan wants control over the personel decisions.

The Skins could have brought in Cowher the year after he won the Super Bowl and it wouldn't matter. They could bring in Belichick and it wouldn't matter.

I think Shanahan is pretty overrated, as well, so am I a hater?

No, seriously, I'm just not all that impressed with what he's done recently as a personnel guy or coach.

Snyder had dinner with Gibbs last night

Posted by Mike Florio on October 11, 2009 8:12 PM ET

Though it's surely not a precursor to another return to the sidelines in D.C., we're told that Commanders owner Daniel Snyder had dinner Saturday night with two-time former coach Joe Gibbs.

Per a league source, Snyder still consults with Gibbs, who retired for a second time after the 2007 season, about the team. And we've got a feeling that the two men at some point discussed the best way to navigate a disappointing season in D.C.

Some still believe that Snyder also consults with Mike Shanahan; a team source has flatly denied that contention. And as to lingering rumors that Shanahan will be the next coach of the team, Peter King reported on NBC's Football Night In America that Shanahan definitely will not taking a head-coaching job anywhere during the 2009 season, but that Shanahan will jump back into the fray in January.

It makes plenty of sense. Shanahan has less leverage if only one team wants him; he'll have plenty of leverage come January, if multiple teams come calling

My guess is that the Skins get some big name coach, probably Holmgren who wants to coach in the NFC East.

With the way the economy has been and given how much Snyder has leveraged himself to get the Skins and how much of a hit he's taken with businesses like Johnny Rockets and Six Flags, he's got to find a viable way to not lose fans.

They were all set to hire Fassel, until the WP did a poll showing the fans were vehemently against it, so he went with Zorn, partly because he didn't have a choice and partly because they could market it as Zorn being the 'unknown coach' that can give the fans hope.

There's really no hot coordinators out there and going with the unknown coach won't work again, so they'll probably find a way to get a HC with some credibility in here. It still might be Shanahan if Danny ponies up big $$$$, but I do get the feeling that Shanahan wants control over personnel, so I'm thinking probably Holmgren. I think Cowher wants nothing to do with the Skins, but you never know.

Unfortunately, Snyder has paid off the loans he took to buy the team. I do agree though that he could face economic problems in the next few years because most fans are turning against him and doing their best to figure out ways to hurt his bottom line. Plus, the attrition from season ticket holders has been horrendous. I've only had mine for three years, and I'm not renewing. Not when I can buy tix in the parking lot for half the price.

Haha yeah, but Snyder still has 40 years left in his reign of terror unless he's forced to sell the team.

Commanders and Cowboys fans . . . we even compete about who has the worst owner.:laugh1:

Not really...:p:

No one can compare with Uncle Al Davis. Which is good for Snyder, especially. Though I will give Snyder the credit, he really does want to win, he just hasn't figured out he's not playing Madden or fantasy football.

I don't see any coach who wants control over his roster going to the Commanders. Shanahan was a terrible GM anyway, lots of bad picks, poor choices, throwaways. Holmgren's not so hot as a GM either. Cowher's probably going to the Panthers, so he's out. Gruden didn't impress me in Tampa, long term. He had some very bad years.

It will be interesting seeing who gets what gig though, as the season winds down and heads start to roll.
