Yeah, I'm fairly surprised this thread has lived as long as it has. You have a receiver whose potential helped allow you to release a Hall of Famer, and who has developed into his quarterback's security blanket and biggest weapon at the position. You're not going to let him go. The fact he's going to be restricted if there is no salary cap makes the point even more moot.
As for how big a contract he could get, I can't but help but chuckle at some of the people expecting a 'fair' deal. Agents don't negotiate based on fair. They negotiate for dollars -- and Jerry usually pays out, sometimes to his detriment.
The only negative against Miles money-wise is that he has just one year of production. But he's young (25), has ridiculous stats (leads the NFC in receiving yards and is second in TDs), was thoroughly consistent throughout the season from his first start to his last, was equally as big in the playoff victory, earned a spot in the Pro Bowl and is only going to get better.
That doesn't add up to a prove-you-can-do-it-again $20 million contract. He might not demand as much as Roy, but I'd imagine he's going to get paid in the neighborhood of the top 4-7 at his position.
This might be one of those situations where a player gets a big one-year deal - $7 - 10M. If he does it again, he gets the multi-year version with a big signing bonus.
Personally, I don't have much doubt about Miles. I don't see any gaping holes in his game that DCs and CBs are going to exploit. He pretty much well runs all routes pretty well, goes deep, catches short screens, goes across the middle, makes big blocks, can play well in big games, can play well against good CBs, can beat double teams.....etc. He also seems to have a very solid head on his shoulders so I don't see him becoming a victim of his success. I am so convinced he is going to be good that I am not worried if we give him a big multi-year deal right away - Roy dollars plus a little extra.
Barber was the classic case of Jerry jumping the gun too early with the big multi-year deal when Barber was still a RFA. Barber hadn't proved he could be an elite back for a whole season as the #1. He had only started one game in 2007. Miles, OTOH, has proven he can be a #1 WR.
The only question about Miles is injury. Only time will tell with that but I'm keeping my fingers crossed about his health. I was impressed that he could catch the ball so well after spraining his thumb in week 17 - shows that he has the toughness needed to play football as a starter.
