Resigning Miles Austin

Has anyone considered that this is probably going to be a no cap off season.
If I have this right, (please correct me) Jerry could pay Miles loads of $$ up front and very little on the backend. None of the up front money would be counted against the cap when the new players contract is signed.

From what I hear, Jerry will be a little handicapped by the Cowboys being a top 8 team, on signing other teams free agents, but not our own.

I would say get it done, Jerry! Give him the money up front, and pray that he keeps working as hard as he has in the past.

Perhaps you should consider this.

If 2010 is uncapped, it means that Miles is not an unrestricted free agent.

hes staying...it would be stupid on our end...and his end..2 leave

1) hes already broken records with romo (as 2 undrafted guys)

2) they have chemistry

3) he knows our system

4) we need him...just plain n simple

Boy. That's going to be a real consideration for Miles. Gee, another team is offering me much more money, but I done broke this record with Tony, so I really should stay.

It's like Brad Sham or the guy announcing with him said about Emmitt:

"He's going to make a bundle".

CHA CHING!

Miles Austin is a flat out stud.

CHA CHING!

I better hope Jerry gives this kid his payday. He is too good to be let go, and is the ANTI TO. He seems to really have a great affect on us. Besides he's help lift alot people's spirits after the TO crisis. So I hope Jerry does resign him cuz he is too good to let go.

Well, if Austin demands an outlandish contract, you can bet Jerry will let him go.

No one player can hold the team hostage. But, not to worry, Austin is team first, so he get what is a fair offer, and only slightly more.

Gee, maybe we can get another 10 picks in the 5th round or later...dumb

Or we can draft a great young WR! Did he seriously post that?

Who honestly in there right mind thinks hes going to walk?

It would be the worst career decision ever for him to leave Dallas and Jerry always rewards players like this.

Its as good as done.

I found this link while surfing around; I hope some of you enjoy it as much as I did.

Basically Jets fans were interesting in Miles Austin coming for a visit when he was a restricted FA in the off season. They debate hot and heavy about if he was worth a 2nd round pick. The thread continues through his emergence as a star.

They go from doubt, to regret, to denial.

Sorry Jets.:laugh1:

Yeah, I'm fairly surprised this thread has lived as long as it has. You have a receiver whose potential helped allow you to release a Hall of Famer, and who has developed into his quarterback's security blanket and biggest weapon at the position. You're not going to let him go. The fact he's going to be restricted if there is no salary cap makes the point even more moot.

As for how big a contract he could get, I can't but help but chuckle at some of the people expecting a 'fair' deal. Agents don't negotiate based on fair. They negotiate for dollars -- and Jerry usually pays out, sometimes to his detriment.

The only negative against Miles money-wise is that he has just one year of production. But he's young (25), has ridiculous stats (leads the NFC in receiving yards and is second in TDs), was thoroughly consistent throughout the season from his first start to his last, was equally as big in the playoff victory, earned a spot in the Pro Bowl and is only going to get better.

That doesn't add up to a prove-you-can-do-it-again $20 million contract. He might not demand as much as Roy, but I'd imagine he's going to get paid in the neighborhood of the top 4-7 at his position.

Miles is going nowhere... nor do I think he wants to...

This might be one of those situations where a player gets a big one-year deal - $7 - 10M. If he does it again, he gets the multi-year version with a big signing bonus.

Personally, I don't have much doubt about Miles. I don't see any gaping holes in his game that DCs and CBs are going to exploit. He pretty much well runs all routes pretty well, goes deep, catches short screens, goes across the middle, makes big blocks, can play well in big games, can play well against good CBs, can beat double teams.....etc. He also seems to have a very solid head on his shoulders so I don't see him becoming a victim of his success. I am so convinced he is going to be good that I am not worried if we give him a big multi-year deal right away - Roy dollars plus a little extra.

Barber was the classic case of Jerry jumping the gun too early with the big multi-year deal when Barber was still a RFA. Barber hadn't proved he could be an elite back for a whole season as the #1. He had only started one game in 2007. Miles, OTOH, has proven he can be a #1 WR.

The only question about Miles is injury. Only time will tell with that but I'm keeping my fingers crossed about his health. I was impressed that he could catch the ball so well after spraining his thumb in week 17 - shows that he has the toughness needed to play football as a starter.

Jerry is the guy everybody was laughing at for implying that Austin could be the guy who stepped up and replaced T.O.'s production. He's not going to let him go now that he's proved him right. Especially considering Miles is only 25.

Can't believe he's only 25... I salivate at the thought of him playing another 8-10 or so years for us and breaking records. :star:

The other thing is that he only started playing football late in his HS years, then went to a small college where he played some football as well. He is still almost a "football baby" so I think there is likely to be more growth in his game over time as he refines his routes, learns more about coverage and how to set up CBs, etc.

I really want to see what our triplets version 2.0 does next year:

Romo-Miles-Felix

I guess this time the TE is so prolific you could call them the quadruplets:

Romo-Miles-Felix-Witten

The underlying key to all of this is the OL so I would urge Jerry to keep paying Houck and keep drafting OL. We have Free and allegedly Brewster is going to be a player but then there is nothing else of significance.

Nothing not to like about the kid... he is playing in the NFL and the joy he has doing so, is evident...

He is what every player in the NFL should be...

I say hold off on him give him a first round tender. If he signs else where let him walk. Take the first round pick and head in another direction. Then resign him in the middle of the season or something.

I see your point, but I wouldn't even THINK of going there...

He is a proven commodity, and Jerry rarely drafts the WR in early rounds...

Re-sign him... quickly...

Austin isn't going anywhere....the other guy the cowboys need to resign is Gerald Sensebaugh, he's the guy that gives this defense so much flexibility
