Re: Ware, I'd like to see them try to renegotiate Ware's deal like they did with Doug Free.

Sure, you can argue he deserves it, but is that how you run a team? On the one hand, you want to show players that they'll be rewarded for good play, but on the other, from a business standpoint, you can't get sentimental and overpay, or you end up with Ratliff.

Agreed, don't need no more Ratliff type contacts. Contract wise, Hatcher is in a bad position with the Cowboys. This team just got burned by a Ratliff contract, the salary cap is a mess and he is 32yrs old playing the best he has ever played. Its a lose.. lose...position,, I'm sure the Cowboys would love to keep him but its just not practical at this point. Hatcher has outplayed his contract and earned a big payday, i for one hope he gets it, just not from the Cowboys. But you can never count out Jerry Jones.....

I wouldn't have a problem with them letting all the older, expensive players go (Ware, Witten, Austin, etc). Not winning anything with them anyway. If they took the entire hit of their contracts in one year, it would be really tough, but then they'd have a lot of money to spend for the year after. Most likely a couple of good comp picks as well. If they drafted well the next two years, and made good choices in FA after 2014, they could restock pretty quick.

Thats what needs to happen,,,but Jerry Jones will never do that...never

Re: Ware, I'd like to see them try to renegotiate Ware's deal like they did with Doug Free.

I commented earlier that I think the team will take a similar approach to the DL next year the way they did with the OL this year. It makes sense if they treat the Ware situation very much like they did Free this year, freeing up money and ensuring that they don't have to fill an extra roster spot on top of all the others on the line. Then focus on finding one impact player early in the draft, bring in the best bang-for-your-buck free agent that you can afford, and try to fill in the cracks by developing what you have (if we're forcing analogies again, Crawford will be the DL's Ron Leary).

You don't pay age. He has been great this year, but they need to let him go, and draft a replacement.

I think they need to keep him if the deal is reasonable, AND draft his replacement. I don't think Hatcher has been overused in his career, so he seems to have some mileage left, and we need to get as many good pass rushers as we can for this line if we're going to keep this system.

I have to say I’m torn over what we should do.

Part of me says don’t give a player over 30 a big deal as he’s unlikely to perform to the contract.

However he has played well for a couple of years now and moving to the 4-3 under Marinelli seems to be a perfect fit and he is playing at a Pro Bowl level IMO.

In addition if we let him go who do we have to replace him.

Ware appears to be in decline, Spencer well who knows!

If all three are gone you’re not going to be able to replace the productivity in one draft.

To me it depends if Marinelli is here for the next few years.

If he is then I might chance it.

If not then I say franchise him and start drafting replacements ASAP.

I think the plan was to let Crawford take over the 3 tech spot after playing a full year this year. His injury and Hatcher exploding makes that plan look inadequate now.

Agreed.

I was listening to the Lunch Break on Monday and they figured Crawford would do everything Hatcher could.

My thoughts were how they know what Crawford can do; we haven’t seen enough of him to say either way.

Good point about Crawford, everyone also said the same thing about Bruce Carter. They can not just pencil someone in on the DL and say its good.

McCoy and Suh are a lot younger. Hatch will be 32 this offseason IIRC. No way I'm giving 8.5 mill to him. Now, with Stephen and Jerry, you never know.
I just mean in terms of the franchise. Those two contracts are so big that they raise the franchise numbers bunch. I dont' think hatch is going to get a salary comparable to them.

watch our idiot GM back up the truck to give Hatcher a big long-term contract
everyone knows it, including Hatchers agent

2 sure things in the off season:

1. Idiot Jerry over pays for Hatcher
2. CZ homers laud the 'greatness' of the contract

The 2013 Franchise Tag for DT was $8,450,000. It's projected to be about 9M in 2014.

This makes the most sense (no pun intended) CS! They need an impact, blue-chip draft pick on the d-line along with a proven FA vet to pair alongside Ware -- Hatcher is a long shot to re-sign but it's worth the effort.

Next, give Bass, Crawford, and some of the other unproven guys a chance to battle it out. Low-cost FAs can also be brought in to compete.

I don't think Hatchers progression has anything to do with money as much as it does this new scheme. People tend to forget Hatcher led our DL in sacks last year playing End in the 3-4. Moving him closer to the QB, less doubles, certainly the reason he is acceling.

When you have a leader, pro bowler, don't second guess yourself Jerry. 5/6 mil tops for 2/3 more years should do it.

& please stop comparing this guy and situation to the Ratliff one. Ratliff never played with as much passion and heart as this guy does. And Ratliff wasn't half the leader this guy is. Did you EVER see Ratliff coming to the side of a teammate, or even up cheering on the team for that matter? Think about it.

This team needs Jason Hatcher these young guys are learning passion for this franchise under vocal guys like him. This franchise needs Hatch more than just on the field.

Jerry...Don't blow the Ratliff situation, and then blow the Hatcher situation, because you blew the Ratliff situation....

After yesterday's game i was thinking about Jason Hatcher. I know the old saying about players performing in a contract year, but, I think we need to find a way to resign him - hear me out.
He is the heart and soul of all our rushlinemen. After Ratlif and Spencer being gone. Ware is a fantastic player - but not a vacal leader. It is Hatcher that speaks and leads this group. We are young and going to be younger after this next draft (i hope). He will be the voice in the locker room, the player to show the way. Somehow, someway we need to find a way to resign him for a couple of years without breaking our empty bank.
"I ate a Giant" - thats exactly what we need, his play and his demenor.
Find a way, keep him a cowboy till he retiers but it can't be a Ratlif type contract.
If we do not retain him, which is very possible we will not have any strong personality on a young line. Very similar to what Brian Waters gave us on the offensive line. An older player who shows by example how to play and with a bit of a mean edge. (Which is why I would also bring Waters back for one more year).
What do you think ?

Hatcher is to beware of. He's playing lights out but next year? No guaranteed salaries, pls. Sign him to a decent amount of monies but keep the memory of Ratliff alive, Jerra.

Hatcher has been a mainstay of a defense thats been bad the past several years. Historically bad this year.

Individually he is s good player but we woukd be best served building that unit from scratch.

Besides I dont think we can afford to resign or franchise him. 31.5 mil over the cap is not going to be easy to overcome even if you are good at manipulating contracts.
