Report: Pats shipping Richard Seymour to Oakland

Posted by Mike Florio on September 6, 2009 10:53 AM ET
Wow.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the New England Patriots have traded defensive end Richard Seymour to the Oakland Raiders for a first-round pick in the 2011 draft.

Wow.

The move suggests that the Patriots realize they wouldn't have been able to keep Seymour and nose tackle Vince Wilfork beyond 2009, whose contracts expire after the coming season.

And the decision to move Seymour could mean that the Pats are willing to pay Wilfork whatever he has requested in previous negotiations.

But there's a chance Wilfork's price tag just went north, because now the Patriots have a more compelling reason to keep Wilfork.

Meanwhile, Seymour's role in the Raiders' 4-3 defense is unclear. He likely will play defensive tackle. Also, the Raiders might decide to employ a 3-4 on a change-of-pace basis, especially with Greg Ellis on the team, too.

There's also a chance that Seymour's stay in Oakland will be a short one. He has been shipped from one of the league's premier franchises to the place that literally and figuratively has become the NFL's Black Hole.

Frankly, if the Raiders gave up a first-round pick in 2011 for Seymour without signing him to an extension, then it really is time for the league to step in and take over the team.

Given that there's no reason to think the Raiders will improve their fortunes in the next two seasons, that first-round selection could be a very high one. And the Pats typically don't like to spend the kind of money that goes along with signing a top-five pick.

That said, there might be a true rookie wage scale by 2011, which would make it cheaper and easier to sign one of the top incoming players.

Regardless, it's a shocking move, one that no one saw coming.

But that's fitting, since it's been a shocking year in the NFL.

And we love every minute of it.

UPDATE: Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe reports that the Patriots have confirmed the trade.

Just said the same thing on BSPN.

Who are the Oakland Patriots? That is what Adam Shefter(sp) just called them.

Oakland did this trade for their 2011 first round pick. But yet Seymour only has one year left on his current contract. So by the time the 2011 season starts, the Raiders could have neither to show for it. That is why they are the Raiders.

:laugh2:

I heard that too. Obviously, a slip of the tongue.

The Patriots are a smart organization. They get rid of their "older" or "redundant" players before they lose their value.

No wonder the franchises is always competing for championships.

I also think NE is going back to the 4-3 as early as next year. This just shows why the Pats are always a half a step in front of most franchises and why Oakland is always 1.5 steps behind.

Steal for the Pats. AGAIN!

Moss for a 4th and Seymour for a first. Brilliant.

It's not so much brilliance on New England's part as it is stupidity on Al Davis' part...

But when other teams don't take advantage of Al Davis' stupidity, then either they're stupid too or the Patriots are brilliant. But it seems like the Patriots do this stuff all the time ... Bledsoe (a first round pick via a trade), Branch (a first round pick via a trade), Cassell (a second round pick via a trade), now Seymour (a first round pick via a trade).

And those trades were with other teams. Yeah, brilliance.

Yeah Ellis should've been gone like 3 or 4 years ago when we first went to a 3-4 but this franchise is run by a fan.

It started with the tuck rule. New England has been pissing all over Oakland ever since.

Surprised to see the Patriot's will be playing more 4-3 this year. They never follow NFL trends. Countering trends seems very smart to me. Making this philosophy work takes exceptional coaching - the advantage the Pats have over the rest of us.

Now that the Patriots have weakened their defensive line by trading Richard Seymour to the Raiders, the Pats have made a move aimed at beefing up their offensive line.

According to Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com and Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Patriots have signed veteran guard Kendall Simmons.

Simmons, a first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2002, suffered a ruptured Achilles' tendon last season. He became a free agent in late February, and he remained unsigned throughout the summer.

Simmons started 46 of 48 regular-season games from 2005 through 2007 before being lost for the year in the fourth game of the 2008 season.

The Patriot defense didn't look that impressive to me going in to the season. A lot less now.

Maybe the Patriots figure they'll win on offense, you know, score more points than the other guys and do it so quickly that you dictate what offenses have to do, i.e., pass to keep up with you.

Love what Al Davis is doing to the Raiders.

Couldn't happen to a better group of fans.

Talk about a front-office mismatch. Al Davis vs. the Patriots.

At this rate, Belichick will get two more good years out of Randy Moss, then trade him back to Oakland for a first-rounder in 2012.

this is why some Pats fans are upset. the defense is taking a hit when the defensive line was the strength to the unit. but fans are warming up to it quickly.

and yes, the are completing the switch to a predominantly 4-3 team this year with so many others switching to the 3-4. they are deep on the DL

The Pats fleece yet another team. Do the Raiders really think that soon-to-be-past-his-prime Seymour will be part of any kind of real turnaround? The Boys made a similar (but less costly) move for Charles Haley because they knew they were close. Conversely, Oakland is not one elite player away from something magical happening.

For the Pats it make sense in a variety of ways, including having to deal with Wilfork's contract down the line, etc.

For the Raiders, I really don't see how this is a good deal for them.
