The Pats fleece yet another team. Do the Raiders really think that soon-to-be-past-his-prime Seymour will be part of any kind of real turnaround? The Boys made a similar (but less costly) move for Charles Haley because they knew they were close. Conversely, Oakland is not one elite player away from something magical happening.
Good question, problem is you're dealing with an 80 year old geriatric with bat **** for brains.

At this rate, Belichick will get two more good years out of Randy Moss, then trade him back to Oakland for a first-rounder in 2012.

:muttley:

You never know, Crazy Al might do a Deangelo Hall and cut Seymour in a few months... Just in time for New England to sign him back for the playoffs.

And then trade him to Al again next year.

The Raiders just got robbed again. For a team that is as weak as they are to give a first round pick for a guy whose best days are behind him is nuts.

Once again the Pats show why they are so good year in and year out. Unlike Jerry they dont get attached to "their guys" they just keep making good football decisions.

Seymour is good, but they do have some nice depth there in NE.

That could be yet another top ten pick. :(

Raiders get fleeced. Pick will be top 5, Seymour 30 and had knee injuries last year. Al Davis driving that franchise into the ground. Love the way they cut Garcia so Russell would not have anybody looking over his shoulder. They also wont have anybody to play QB this year.

To be fair, the Patriots didn't do something ignorant like announce that they were trying to trade Seymour in advance therefore making his value nil on the trade market.

But Seymour also didn't make it known that he was unhappy in New England and wanted out. I gotta give the Pats credit because they seem to sell preposterous trades to crappy teams. They practically stated that they were going to trade Matt Cassel, a guy that had one pretty good year playing on a team loaded with offensive talent, and they wind up getting him for a 2nd rounder from KC (who has a talented young QB in Tyler Thigpen).

Ellis' trade value was nil because he doesn't have much left in the tank and at his best he was a solid pass rusher and solid against the run. Seymour at his best was once the best D-Lineman in the game and just came off a season where he tied his career best for sacks in a season.

Minority owners of the Raiders should have Alzheimer declared incompetent and removed. That is gonna be another top 5 pick.

Love what Al Davis is doing to the Raiders.

Couldn't happen to a better group of fans.

Talk about a front-office mismatch. Al Davis vs. the Patriots.

I beg to differ. It could happen to Philthy and I'd be elated.

Seriously, the league needs to force Al Davis to sell that team. He is obviously mentally incapable of running a franchise.

Surprised to see the Patriot's will be playing more 4-3 this year. They never follow NFL trends. Countering trends seems very smart to me. Making this philosophy work takes exceptional coaching - the advantage the Pats have over the rest of us.

I know it's a trend, but the NFL is still a 4-3 league.

The problem with countering trends is that sometimes there's a good reason why it is a trend, because it works or that's the direction the league is heading. That being said, I'm not a big fan of the 4-3, but if you have a lack of depth at linebacker or don't have the personnel for the 3-4, then the smart move is to find a defense that suits your personnel, instead of stubbornly trying to make your personnel fit your scheme.

But this is typical Patriots stuff, get a first round pick and then that gives you leverage and flexibility. As far as Ellis goes, people forget that at his best Ellis was once a steady pass rusher who was pretty good against the run and really came off a lousy season in '08. OTOH, Seymour was once arguably the best D-Lineman in the game who just came off a season where he matched his season high of 8 sacks. Furthermore, Ellis made it public on quite a few occasions he wanted out of Dallas...Seymour (to my knowledge) never did. But really, the Pats got more for Seyour because Seymour is a far more talented player.

Probably not.

The Pats will trade down into the teens (and still pick the guy they want) and pick up a first rounder in 2012.

I'm feeling ill.

Where does it say the Patriots are switching to a 4-3?

This is for a 2011 1st, not 2010, so Brady will have played 2 seasons before this pick happens. Based on your opinion, Brady would have 3 years left, seems like a good time to pick a QB and groom him to me.
Actually what I said was he has at least 5 years ahead of him, probably more.

Besides, that isn't how the Patriots organization works - in fact I don't think any football team works that way. There is absolutely no way of knowing right now who will be available, either at QB or any other position, in the 2011 draft or what needs the team will have. They're not going to allocate a draft pick to a certain position 2 years in advance.

I found this interesting. Check out the comments from Pats fans below the article. Not all of them are happy about the deal.
I have to admit I am a bit confounded by this move. Now my rule is to reserve judgement until things play out... for example, if they trade for Julius Peppers tomorrow, then obviously the move makes sense.

But, right now as of this moment, I think it is a bad trade. Oh sure, if they were 6-10 last year looking towards the future, it's a great trade. But the Patriots are not exactly entering a rebuilding year and they sure could use Seymour's services this season. Fact is that as far as the 2009 season is concerned, they've lost one of their superstar players and gotten absolutely nothing in return.

Maybe Belichick has an ace up his sleeve, and I withhold my final judgement. But my first impressions are that it was unwise.

Friggen New England. They always have people they can trade and keep having 2 first round picks to play around with. I hate those guys.

And the Cowboys got what for Greg Ellis?

Or any player for that matter. We just keep fringe players around until we're absolutely certain they have nothig to offer or nothing left. Then we scatter come draft time and try to fill those voids.

The way the Patriots run their business is unreal. I give them a ton of credit.

The thing that amazes me the most about the Patriots is how tight-lipped the entire organization is. This is not the first transaction they've made where nobody in the media had so much as a sniff of what was in the works beforehand.
