News: Rico gets it!

A guy with his size can't block? For TE's it is mostly about effectively screening off pursuit. I guess they no longer teach power forwards how to block out for rebounds. Jeesh... just get in the way big man - try to gum up pursuit lanes.

In basketball a big man with armor on isn't hitting you full speed.

Ok.. so is he blocking better. He has had 2 years. I could have learned to block effectively by now.

That's what everyone says unt
I don't think he is an every down TE. I just see a use for him in the red zone. He is 6' 8" tall, nearly 300lbs, and seems to have descent hands. If he is turned around in front of a DB in the end zone... They are lucky if they see daylight, let alone stop the catch. That is where I see a team using a huge guy, with hands, that can't block.. This might even force double coverage in the end zone on him. I saw one DB hit his arm on a pass he caught and his arm didn't even move. He was just too strong in that regard, for an average DB.

So think of him like the William Perry of TEs, for the red zone. That is how I always pictured using him.

But wont that also play into being too predictable? You don't insert Rico to help block for a rb touchdown.

Whenever Rico's name comes up this year I try to figure out who he's going to beat out.
  • Certainty not Swaim--who is faster and more versatile. Great redzone TD catch from Dak in the scrimmage as well.
  • They will for sure keep the rookie Shultz.
  • And I keep hearing Jarwin looks very good too.
Unless they keep 4, it could be tough.

I also keep hearing what a dynamic down-field threat he is by some here, but his 40 times are about the same or slower than all three of the guys ahead of him

His potential is enticing though, so I get why we are trying to get him over the hump.

As long as Zeke's on the field, no one is going to take him for granted. Play action will get Rico open every time in that scenario.

Just saying if and when Rico gets beat by 1st team guys I fot 1 will be pissed we didn't run Zeke.

We know he can catch and is a beast to take down. I wondered something yesterday. I wonder if the staff knows he is ready and he has likely already made the team and they are running the other TE to see whom else makes it and who we try to slip on the PS.

Cause Rico has only ever beat 3rd stringers.

And even Rico knows he can't block.

What does that have to do with passing vs running with Zeke?

Or are you just looking for an excuse to harp on his blocking like this is the first time it's been mentioned?

Don't need an excuse but why put in an unrelisunr guy when your workhorse put you in position

Or Gathers is just that raw. Look, he has athletic ability. But he cannot do the little things, how can you justify keeping him as an active 53 player?

He was an experiment that did not work out for the boys... It was a 6 round risk, nothing more. Like most of us, I was hoping he would have worked out.

I think it may make it more unpredictable, if.... well... I am thinking of another coaching staff probably lol.

Swaim is not faster. He does not get down the field.

If you can show me a functional roster that has a TE that "just catches passes" do tell. There is blocking, ST duty, you name it. Find me this one team that has that.

Give me a few more roster spots, I would love to keep a one trick pony.
I will list some names and you tell me what comes to mind first, blocker or receiver:

Kelce
Reed (Commander TE)
Graham

None of them scare anyone with their blocking prowess. Sometimes I wonder if based on what is said on this forum if Dallas ought to use one of their swing tackles as a TE and let them block and just don't use a TE. I mean catching passes apparently is not important for a TE for many here. Can they pancake their man on a regular basis? Now that is the question they want answered.

I still worry Rico goes on to dominate as a receiving TE for some other team, while we're hungup on just his blocking. Everyone should be given equal opportunity with the first team offense.

He seems like the kind of guy that if he became a starter, would immediately hold out demanding a new contract.
