One of the bodies found on a rock face in California’s San Bernardino National Forest has been identified as Gavin Escobar, the former Dallas Cowboys tight end.

Law enforcement officials responded to a Wednesday emergency call regarding a pair of rock climbers/hikers and on Thursday, the local coroner identified the two as Gavin Escobar, 31, and Chelsea Walsh, 33.

Both Escobar and Walsh are from Huntington Beach, California, where Escobar had recently become a member of the Long Beach Fire Department.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the off-duty death of Long Beach Firefighter Gavin Escobar,” the department said via social media.

Went on to be a fire fighter after his career which is in itself admirable. Death by adventure is a risk they all take and they all know the inevitable repercussions if they make a mistake. Still a sad and tragic event for Gavin Escobar and his family and that of the woman who perished with him.

Wow, I live 30 min from Idyllwild. If it's the area I'm thinking of there have been a few that have died climbing there

Yeah I think they were climbing Lily Rock but all the climbers call it Tauquitz Rock which is a very technical climb.

I understand that people can die at any time, but what I don't understand is getting involved in such high risk endeavors where the possibility of death is high simply for fun or excitement, especially when young children can be left without a father.

Just awful. Cowboy, firefighter, husband, father, son...

That is such a dangerous hobby. I knew someone who died doing that same thing.

High adrenaline guys thrive on it though. He was obviously one of those guys in all aspects of his life.

I'm no statistician but there are reports that say your odds of dying in a car accident are much greater than climbing. Obviously, just like driving, a little education, reasonable judgement, and experience go a long way to making it safer.

Are recent movies like "Free Solo" and "Dawn Wall" inspiring people to climb above the level they should? Possibly.

FWIW, both are great movies, even for non-climbers.

Wow. The pro football thing didn't work out for him, but he had a wife, 2 kids, top 0.1% physical ability by any measure, and a spot on the California firefighter gravy train. He had it set up, and at 31, things were just getting started.
