I'll defend Ryan when it comes to how he played coverage. There was no earthly way to do anything other than what he did with at least one exception. He had inadequate coverage at safety.
I don't care too much for Sensi and he cannot take up the slack for broken press coverages as he has trouble playing his position marginally to begin with. When you lost Church you lost any wiggle room there at all what little there was.
Then you add in the fact that you have people off the street playing ILB who cannot cover adequately. There goes your coverage in the flats and all the other places ILBs cover including the RBs and TEs at times esp the RBs for the most part.
That forced Ware and Spencer into coverage more often to cover for the ILBs some (you can't cover it up that well anyway but you can try some). So that takes away from the pressure that Ware and Spencer bring not to mention what Lee and Carter can bring blitzing.
It was a mess.
Still he could have said I'm not getting the pressure anyway, I'm losing the battle on 3rd downs too often and we aren't getting their offense off the field. The other side of that is you are playing at more risk for bigger plays more often by sending people who you desperately need to cover forever to begin with. You still have to do it to make the O at least think about max protect. It was a losing proposition. I'm all over that for Ryan.
My problem with Ryan and those before him is one of the single most predictors of wins and losses in the NFL is turnovers. I don't fault him for the decreased pressure that much with the decimated defense. But he never got turnovers anyway even when we were healthy. At least not enough.
I still think there is more to it than we can possibly know esp the personal side of things. And we can't know what the lure of a Lovie Smith or Ray Horton did or could do. Nor do we know if there is more up the line such as hiring consultants, offensive coordinators or even head coaches.
So stay tuned.
