Rob Ryan schooled again

Yup.

Commander possessions:
1st: Turnover
2nd: Punt
3rd: Punt
4th: Punt
5th: Punt
6th: Touchdown
7th: Touchdown
8th: Field Goal
9th: Missed Field Goal
10th: Punt
11th: Turnover
12th: Touchdown
13th: Missed Field Goal

Pretty obvious that the Commanders made adjustments- but we never did. Or if we did, they were not very effective. This game was way too close and it should not have been. I know it was the Commanders and a rivalry game- but our team never seems to be as up for these games as the rivals are.

Is McBriar's foot still having issues? I don't think I've seen him shank a punt that badly in quite some time.

He's NEVER shanked one like that... one of those things...

He's been among the best punters in the NFL for several years now... he does have some injuries... I'll give him the benefit of the doubt given his track record...

He ran Banks out of bounds, so I doubt it.

I don't care about the yards.

We caved when it mattered most - at the end of the 4th quarter and again in OT. They moved the ball 45 yards pretty easily to get into FG range and then got too conservative.

The part that bothers me isn't so much they moved the ball but the way they moved the ball. There is a systemic issue that is being exploited that we have to fix.

The most important thing may be to mix things up more in our coverages and to get Carter on the field more (even on first down).

I saw Ball and Scandrick getting picked on with little help underneath from the LBers. Two of those critical throws were against Ball. The throw fade and that throw down the left sideline were just great throws by Grossman. After he ran for that score and the crowd got behind him, he played very well. Scandrick couldn't do anything but hold it seemed when he pressed.

I think some credit needs to be given to the Commanders. Grossman played a good game. He made good reads and even the pick was just a bad throw because of our pressure. Trent Williams has played Demarcus Ware better than anyone this year and its really not close for all of our whining about his holding. We got the call this time at least.

I was content with giving him a pass on the short fields until Rex Grossman went like 8-10 on a drive where the Commanders went 85-90 yards by ONLY passing.

Part of me wonders if he came into the game today daring Grossman to beat him and when Grossman started to he really didn't have a backup plan.

Agreed.

Not a very good defensive stand. Don't know how much a lack of execution figures into it, but that drive shouldn't have happened.

He never had a foot injury, he had a nerve injury causing a "foot drop". The location of that nerve injury was actually up around his knee.

Anyhow, it must be better because I don't think he was wearing his brace today on his ankle.

The special teams play caused more harm that the defense. But the defense was not very impressive either. Even with the ST giving the Commanders great field position- we should have done a better job. We were just not very impressive.

I really wish that we could make more effective adjustments during the games. It is not unreasonable to expect that some weeks, the bad guys WILL guess right and have us over the barrel when it comes to defensive schemes and game plans.

Today for example, we were constantly letting the backs release out of the backfield and leaving them to play catch on the outside with Grossman. Also, the deep in by their receivers route was left pretty well uncontested all game long as well. opponents are doing, and stop it, then we will be seeing this stuff all game long.

Not a genius move to just keep taking a play until the defense makes you stop- and ours has failed to do so several times this season- that does not make the prospects of a playoff run very realistic for me.

Also- for crying out loud, Rob should STOP talking smak about upcoming opponents until AFTER we win the game. His "Ryan Mouth" is not helping us any. And the pass rush that was going to "kill the QB" if they ran deeper routes was nowhere in site today.

It's time for Ryan to shut up and coach. It's not as old as his brother, but close.

Ryan's redzone defense was bad, but let's not get carried away. If not for our horrible ST play, the Commanders never had a chance. They drove the length of the field for 10 points. I wouldnt say he got "schooled".

hell, it was on a Grossman knee down that allowed them to stay in the game, if not we go up 17-0 and would have blown them out

Anyone who saw the look on his face and sigh of relief when the skins missed that FG can tell he felt he didn't get the job done today.

Great post.

The only thing that truly bothered me was the fact that receivers were repeatedly wide open in the flat for big gains, simply because this has been a problem going all the way back to the pre season. I'm not sure what we're doing scheme wise that makes this such a big issue.

Aside from that, I think a healthy Jenkins will make a world of difference.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.... ;)

The lack of pass rush pressure the past 3-4 games really concerns me. But this game was almost lost because of really poor ST play.

The multiple short fields given up by atrocious return coverage and McBriar's 26 yd punt allowed the Skins momentum to really swing in their favor.

We won move on my #$$$ OP is right. Let's see what happens when
his stupid strategy costs up big games. Secondary has the skills to win games
and shut down opponents but they looked a bit lost out there why??? coaching of course...ignore it if you want but it was evident that the defense played below their skill.....

This!

2 negatives for this game...

#1 defensive scheme stunk
#2 ST probably has played their worst game so far this season

Careful, couchscout and Hos will be here soon to tell you why you're wrong and should have no opinion.

I'd add that Garrett did not have a good plan for the offense and did not have them ready.
