Robert Brewster?

Brewster played pretty well at RT. The one play that he allowed pressure was more Kitna bailing the pocket early. Tackles are taught to slide the defender past the pocket. Kitna's always had an issue with seeing psuedo-pressure and dropping into it.

Brewster showed good agilility getting downfield, wasn't overpowered too badly, decent footwork..... I can see why Dallas thinks he has a future as a RT.

If it's the play that I think your talking about a DB blitzed an came uncontested to the inside and forced Kitna to fall back right into pressure. No blitz and Kitna has a pocket to set up and throw from.

He played well at LT once he moved over there also.

In all of the commotion last night, and with all of the players I tried to keep an eye on, I completely forgot about Brewster.

I don't remember seeing him at all last night, which is usually a good thing for an OL. However, I know we had a lot of problems pass blocking with our 2nd and 3rd string OL as well.

Did anyone notice anything good or bad about his performance last night?
I paid close attention to Brewser...and was getting sick to my stomach. Ok maybe I'm exaggerating.
Patience is required on this one.

in wade's pc, he singled out brewster (along with costa and young on the OL) and said he played pretty well.

Brewster was one of the first players Wade complimented in his PC. I guess Wade doesn't read this forum.

Per Matt Mosley:

Sorry, but Robert Brewster looked like a bust on this evening. The former Ball State offensive tackle was taken in the third round in '09. He promptly tore a pectoral muscle while lifting weights. On Sunday, he had no chance against the Bengals backup defensive ends and linebackers. He wasn't strong enough to anchor his body and he just got bullied the whole time he was in there. I was not impressed with anything about his performance.

It was his first game in two years. There was going to be rust. Plus, with the torn pectoral muscle, its not like he was able to get in a full season of strength training in the upper body area.

Yes, we can point to Jacob Rogers and a whole slew of busts.

But they'll nailed the Free pick. It took several years before Free got a chance and shined (last year). But it took a couple of years for him to develop. Maybe Brewster follows the same path; maybe not. But I'm willing to give him another year.

McQuistan on the other hand has run his course.

well that is Mosely. Not exactly a really good source as regards what HIS opinion means.

If he did he would have thought he should have been fired by now.

The forum knows all and it is especially accurate with its snap judgements.

From what I remember he had about three bad plays. On one, he didn't stick with his man when another was blitzing and allowed him to go past him to hit Kitna. On another, the defense stunted and Brewster failed to recognize and was caught flat-footed. I can't remember exactly what the other one was right now.

Barron had a man beat him to the outside once, and Young had one beat him to the inside. So overall, there were some bad plays but not a bad day for the backups.

Punky Brewster could have done a better job.

Especially if it's the grown up version!

I'd take it easy on being critical of backup lineman after just that game. The Bengals seemed to be blitzing an awful lot for the first preseason game of the year. It's hard to tell if guys are holding their own or not. I know they should know their assignments, but that isn't indicative of whether or not they can play. I don't have it recorded anywhere, but it's possible that Brewster - and even Barron other than the one play - looked pretty good when the assignment was clear.

On the stunts Brewster played them perfectly.... the fist one that put pressure on the QB Brewster slid over and behind the guard and was in perfect position to pick the guards man up but the guard never released him to pick up the man stunting around him. A few plays later the guard didn't slide a 2nd time so Brewster tried to chase the DE stunting inside down the LOS. Brewster may have looked bad to some on those plays but he was assignment sound while the interior linemen were not.

No, there was one play, I believe when Brewster was at left tackle, when the defensive end rushed inside against the guard and the tackle looped around. Brewster initially moved to toward the end, but saw the guard take him and was caught flat-footed by the tackle. He stopped moving his feet and looking for someone to block.

That was the only play, though, where I noticed him being hurt by the stunt. And it was clearly his fault. The guard did his job.

I think Brewster is being overly criticized, but he did make a few mistakes (which should be expected).

I think Brewster is a bust just like Free.

THe only problem is you can't make a guy into a great athlete.

Free had natural ability when he arrived. Sparano mentioned that he was a natural LT in his first camp. We could all see how well he could move. He just needed to get stronger and learn the nuances of the position.

Brewster is not a great athlete.

He's not a great anything, I still don't understand why we drafted him. I've been confused by many of our offensive line picks for some time now, add Brewster to that list I guess.
