IMHO Gregory is a horrid run defender. An absolute liability who was exposed in the playoffs. And the premise of this thread is absurd. Any competent organization would not rely on Gregory for anything and most would never consider wasting a roster spot on someone so unreliable. As usual we treat roster spots like they have no value and we suffer for it at the end of the year.
1. How was Gregory's run defense exposed in the playoffs?
2. And the premise of this comment is absurd. How hard is it to comprehend that the OP is asking, given a full 16 games next season, who would be the better player?

Gregory. Kid was starting to get to the QB regularly. Maybe not sacks but pressure. Quinn needs to step up his game if we sign him.

This is why DE at 58 or a little sooner should still be on the table. Our pass rush needs help.

Agreed. He had 5 sacks in a 7 game span

Pure physical natural ability?

Gregory.

But this question is a false dichotomy because you cant separate the off field stuff from the on field stuff, its a package deal. Unfortunately for us, Gregory is unable or unwilling to stop doing drugs. Gregory is not dumb, he knows the rules dont allow him to do drugs but he still does it anyways knowing full well that it will keep him from being able to play.

I can at least say that Gregory appears to want to stop, but he just cant. David Iriving on the other hand just doesn't give an F. That is probably why they told Irving to pound sand but are still willing to keep Gregory on the roster.

It’s been what 4 years and people are still talking about Gregory’s potential? Lol

Give me the dude whose going to show up on game day suited up and has some double digit sack seasons in his past.

L-O-L at anyone hedging bets on Gregory dudes a loser who can’t tripping over himself to fail

upside gets teams beat in reality...because "upside" means they haven't reach their "potential"...and THAT word also gets you beat. give me that mudder that always shows up and gives it his all and is available, over some dude that's got potential.

Just for 2019, forget off the field problems, pretend both could play a full healthy 16 games. On the football field, player vs player, who is better?

I'll take Randy. He had been out of football for a year and a half, and his weight was *way* down, and he still had a respectable season.

Even if you just project last year to a full snap count, it's 9 sacks.

Quinn is better he’s been playing football not spending most of his career undergoing rehab. He has 69 career sacks compared to only 7 career sacks for Gregory. Gregory’s development has been stunted due to repeated suspensions the past four seasons. His battle with drug addiction has kept him from reaching his full potential.

Lol, I love how Gregory was a “beast” just a few months ago and one of the best DE’s in the game when playing. Now he’s gone so he’s not that good and Quinn is the next Reggie White.

90% of posters here are bipolar with short memories. It’s the same way with almost every player that doesn’t come here or leaves yet we still haven’t won jack in over two decades.

Quinn had the same number of sacks that Gregory had last season playing a scheme that didn’t fit him.

nothing personal, but the question is just too theoretical for my tastes. it would appear we can never count on Gregory. i'm through feeling sorry for him. he's the same old news, the same old blues again.

How are we suppose to know this? We will never know how much better Randy Gregory would be without the challenges he deals with off the field. It's not a fair question.

@MyFairLady

Don't judge any player based on the Rams game. The Cowboys scheme and coaches were the primary problem with the Cowboys run defense in that game.

Vander Esch struggled and Lee played more of the snaps than VE; however, we know VE is a terrific player and terrific run defender.

Gregory is a quality run defender.

It is very difficult for RBs and QBs to run outside when Gregory has outside contain responsibilities.

The Cowboys often don't have the RDE with outside contain responsibility. Marinelli likes to have a LB pick up outside contain on that side in order to allow the RDE to crash down inside. Nonetheless when Gregory does have outside contain he is terrific in task.

Marinelli didn't want to wear Gregory down by playing him on base downs too often; however, Marinelli emphatically stated that Gregory is good when he does play base and good against the run despite having a lean build.

Obviously a big DE that is really more of a DT like Crawford is going to be the best option to play most of the snaps in situations where they expect a run.

DWare was terrific against the run but Parcells said playing Ware at DE on base downs in a 4-man DL would wear him down.

The guy that did this analysis is terrific at analyzing players and using video to support his conclusions.

All things being equal I’d take Gregory
He’s younger, cheaper and more upside
But in reality one is eligible to play, the other isn’t
