I am convinced that the Cowboys will keep three TE's, and an outside chance at four if they are going to run the 2 TE set so heavily. Who was #89 last year, that TE that only seemed to catch TD's on goal line plays?

That would be John Phillips.

Tony Curtis !! That's who I was thinking of... I wonder what happened to him?

UFA signed with Chiefs

He was an exclusive rights free agent and we didn't even bother tendering him an offer, making him an UFA free to sign anyone.

Seemed to peek in '07 with the onside kick recovery and 3 receptions for 3 touchdowns.

I don't think Hannah ever improved his blocking which is why John Phillips will be the 3rd TE.

But do we want a third tight end that's a blocker when Rice and Beans are both very good at it?

A lot of teams have a "blocking" third tight end because the guys in front of him aren't overwhelming in that regard.

With the double tight end set being our base look, I'd rather keep Rodney Hannah for his pass catching ability in the event one of the starters got nicked.

We'd also have a crazy athletic triple TE set and all would be legit receiving options.

It should also be pretty easy to stash John Phillips on the practice squad, where he could be called up if needed.

I don't think Hannah would be as easy to get through waivers.

and curtis was released last week by KC

hannah won't make the team, he has really progressed the last two years but I think Dallas will keep Phillips instead because of his blocking. I think Philly will pick up Hannah when he's released..

The coaches always go with the guy who can block. It would take exceptional ability in the passing game to go the other way and to date that is the only big play that he's made.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought Phillips was the third tight end. I've been very impressed with him in the two games.

He is and makes the final 53.

Hannah, no chance.

Most likely.

John Phillips is just another blocker, tight ends like him litter the NFL.

The offense is going to be based around our tight ends and all the different looks we can give using them.

Phillips can't do those things and the base offense would have to be shelved were he needed to replace one of the starters.

Rodney Hannah can do all the things the starters can do, just not at as high a level.

I'd rather keep him on the 53 for that reason.

But if the coaches don't trust him as a blocker, it won't happen.

Yeah barring injury Phillips will be our 3rd TE, Hannah will be on the practice squad for about 5 minutes...

Phillips has made the team. It is Hannah vs. Anderson right now

So we've kept a player around for three camps who can't even block?

What are we doing?

Where did you get this from?

John Phillips looks very good running routes and catches everything near him.

3 catches for 9 yards with a long of six?

Everything I've read suggests John Phillips is a typical tight end.

He's a blocker and willing special teams player who catches outlet passes.

He isn't going to threaten the seem or be split out wide or in the slot.

We plan to do those things with our starters, so I'd rather have a back-up who can do it as well.

I also think it would be easier to get Phillips on the practice squad.

If all goes well, it won't matter to us who the third tight end is. I'm just thinking about who could allow the offense to stay as close to normal as possible.

If the coaches think Rodney Hannah is a pass catcher with no heart for blocking, he won't be here. Hannah has to convince them he's willing to do the grunt work involved with the position.
