3 catches for 9 yards with a long of six?

Everything I've read suggests John Phillips is a typical tight end.

He's a blocker and willing special teams player who catches outlet passes.

He isn't going to threaten the seem or be split out wide or in the slot.

We plan to do those things with our starters, so I'd rather have a back-up who can do it as well.

I also think it would be easier to get Phillips on the practice squad.

If all goes well, it won't matter to us who the third tight end is. I'm just thinking about who could allow the offense to stay as close to normal as possible.

If the coaches think Rodney Hannah is a pass catcher with no heart for blocking, he won't be here. Hannah has to convince them he's willing to do the grunt work involved with the position.
I guess you're just basing this on the very limited action you've seen in the past two preseason games, which makes sense, but I saw him get a lot of work in training camp and was very impressed.

Phillips is the third TE. Not only can he block, he is a fine receiver, special team player, and is the backup long snapper.

If its up to Jerry, Hannah makes the team... I think the Cowboys are trying to hide Hannah but after that grab last night, dont bet on it! Thats how we lost Matt Moore...

I'd rather keep 4 TEs than a kickoff specialist...

Woah, I completely disagree here. That 4th TE is a complete waste of a spot. Last night was a pretty good look at how much Buehler's kickoffs help (as long as people friggin' make the tackles).

Phillips sounds like an "effort" guy, which is good, I just like Hannah's upside.

Might be my favorite pet cat since the almighty Kalen Thornton.

I like having a living weapon to kick the ball off.

A case could be made to go with four tight ends and no fullbacks with Deon Anderson iffy following a knee scope. I expect we'll try to let Anderson play through it due to his value on special teams.

I'm sure he puts in a lot of effort, but he looks pretty fluid and athletic for his size (and the guy is pretty big). He's not one of these unathletic try-hard types.

At 6'5-3/8" and 250 lbs, he had a 6.8 3-cone. That's just absurd for that size.

Damn a 6.8 3-cone? That is insane for the size of the dude.

Not if you use one as a fullback. You can have 4 TEs, no FB, no KOS...and then you've got an extra spot to play with...maybe keep another OL on the roster or something.

Plus, by keeping both Phillips and Hannah, you can replace insert either one if either Marty B. or Witt. goes down. Hannah can provide a good deep threat similar to Marty imo...and that way we won't have to change the scheme too much if one goes down. And if Phillips is as good a blocker as advertised, he should be alright as a lead blocker the 10 or so times that we use one, plus he probably has as good of hands as any fullback we would keep.

I would think you are crazy if you think the offense would be run the same if Rodney Hannah needed to replace Witten or Marty B.

They're all kinda big to be used consistently as a fullback/h-back. Witten, Hannah, Bennett, and Phillips are all over 6'5".

I think it's pretty safe that Anderson makes the team.

I don't think you can possibly be too tall to lead block 10 times a game.

I think they will probably go with 3 TE...my first post was more meant to say how much I think keeping a KOS is dumb than I really want 4TE. But if I were to keep 4 TE...that's what I would do.

My thoughts exactly. I would rather have Hannah (AND Phillips) over Deon Anderson. Or McQuistan.

Hannah offers more big play ability than Phillips or any FB on the team.

He was an exclusive rights free agent and we didn't even bother tendering him an offer, making him an UFA free to sign anyone.

Seemed to peek in '07 with the onside kick recovery and 3 receptions for 3 touchdowns.

Bennett > Curtis.

Hell, Bennett > The Chiefs entire TE rotation.

So we've kept a player around for three camps who can't even block?

What are we doing?

The problem with Hannah isn't that he can't block, just that he can't play multiple positions. Earlier in camp, there was talk about Phillips' versatility to line up as an in-line tight end, H-back or fullback, while Hannah presumably has only learned the in-line tight end spot.

Phillips also contributes on special teams, and when you're a backup, all those things add up unless the "one-dimensional" player is an absolute stud.

I like Hannah, but I think he's headed for the PS again to continue the learning process. He was raw as a football player when he came in, so it's all baby steps for him.

I think the coaches are gonna keep hannah. He's listed as third on the depth chart and seems to get more time on special teams.

Welcome to the board.

The next two pre-season games are going to determine which guy Dallas keeps as the 3rd string TE. I think Phillips holds the slight lead at this point.
