The reports are that he wasn't speeding, but he was moving at a pretty fair clip...

It appears the lady was...

That lady turned in front of him... there is some speculation that because of the angle of the sun, she didn't see him...

Haven't heard anything on that subject (and I hope it isn't true, even though I'm neither a Steelers fan nor a fan of Big Ben), but his injuries seem extensive enough that you have to believe he'll be hindered at least early in the season, if he's even available at all then...

Bet you're right...

Thanks Bear.

I don't see how they can put his teeth back in. They will probably have to go the false teeth route or implants.

Yeah, either way they go, there has to still be a period of time until he can really start chewing good food! He's going to drop a lot of weight fast...and that is not good for muscle stimulation. And, gaining all the weight back to he can start working out?

I just cannot see how he plays this season...I just cannot imagine it...

...I was involved in an accident in a Formula 3000 car up here in Canada 15 years ago.

I broke my tibia, dislocated my right shoulder and broke my jaw and nose and cracked my orbital bone. They had to saw my helmet off my head at the hospital in Montreal.

I ended up with multiple fractures to my bottom jaw that required screws and at least two plates along with having my jaw wired shut.

It's impossible to hold or gain weight on the liquid diet. The experience of eating is depressing.

The first thing that happens to you after jaw surgery is the incredible size your head grows to. Can anyone say melonhead? I know this not only from personal experience, but also looking over at the five other guys in the obeservation ward who the surgeon worked on their fractured mandibles. We all looked like cartoon characters. My wife/girlfriend still has a picture of me from those days.

Of all the injuries from that accident the jaw injury was the worst of it. No talking, incredible swelling, everything blended it was the pits. At week seven I took a pair of wire cutters and cut the wires to have my first meal without the surgeon knowing. It was a delicious steak and I loved chewing every painful minute of that piece of shoe leather!

I ride a bike now, but with a helmet. Some of you may have seen pictures of me and my family in the post picture of yourself thread. Those were taken after the last surgery to repair the last remnants of the injury. I had my broken nose and bent nasal cartilage repaired. If you look closely you can see a dark spot scar on my cheek where the surgeon perforated my cheek to insert the plate and screws. The wife and three kids are the reason why I wear a helmet when I'm on the motorycyle/ bicycle/skateboard and rollerblades.

As for myself now 15 years after the accident not a day goes by where I am not constantly reminded that I lost something on that race course. I have difficulty with playng my guitar from a mental aspect. There is definitely problems with certain high level functions like mathematics which is not good for my profession.

Head injuries are no fun and rarely do you come out of them clean. I volunteer with the Canada Safety Council in the motorcycle riders course. We get all the stats on accidents involving motorcycles in our province. Much of what I see supports the use of a helmet.

The guys at the Safety Council use me as the poster child for a good choice in a bad accident with some scars but still alive. It's the last point that is most important - "still alive".

Wow! Thanks for sharing that with us. It can't be easy recalling such a painful ordeal. I heard that when the woman who hit him bent down to see how hurt he was, Ben was asking her questions like, "What state am I in, how did I get here?". Obviously it's natural to be stunned like that when a trauma that severe is first induced. However, as you stated, I wonder what long term effects it will have on his mental state. If you were still wired shut at week seven, then he could stay wired for 3-4 months, from the severity of his injuries.

These missile bikes their making now should be outlawed. They are built to break the speed limit, and are usually purchased by men too young to have the sense to ride them. I know. At age 24, I finally sold my Kawisaki that wasn't nearly as powerful as these new race bikes out today. I realized I couldn't ride it without going 110 with my hair on fire. Even wearing a helmet, that is too fast. So I sold it.

What I don't understand is that the helmets today are so much cooler looking than the ones that I wore. There is no way anyone should ride one of these bikes without a racing helmet with full face protection. If Toothless would have had one of those on, I have no doubt his injuries would have been much less severe. Now, though, because of his pride & vanity, he will go through hell that none of us would wish on our worst enemy.

true, but riding a motorcycle is not the same as say bungy jumping or skydiving. many people use it as a form of transportation. im just saying given the way most americans are, it sure would be hard to say to someone, you cant ride a motorcycle at all because we're paying you a lot of money. and will the same apply to every nfl player including backups and practice squad players ? why would a QB sign that contract if he see's the 2nd string Olineman riding a motorcycle ?

after that precedent where would you draw the line, owners will be finding more ways to "control" players lives in an attempt to protect them. and more and more things will fall into the "dangerous" category.

I'd be curious whether the majority of Americans agree with you on this. Now that this has happened to both Winslow and Rothlisberger in like 2 years my guess is most people would understand if teams just said "no bikes".

Thats just silly logic, IMO. Its just like Gun laws. Its not the bike that is issue. But the person riding it. If the guy is bent on speeding, it would be easy to customize a bike or soup it up. You just can't outlaw stupidity or recklessness etc.

But is riding without a helmet in traffic similar to say... bungy jumping without a harness?

Judas Priest David. I had no idea about any of that stuff. Nice post with lots of good advice.

FWIW, to all who have advised me to wear my helmet. My wife was all over me yesterday when she heard this news. I was headed up to Mt. Lemmon to be part of bear patrol for a camp up there that my oldest daughter is attending. Before I left I showed her pictures of the bike and stuff from this htread.

Right now, I do not have a bike. I sold it a few months back so that a real estate transaction I was working on could go through. I've been bike shopping for the last 2 weeks. I made a promise to my wife last night that I will not ride without a helmet.

Now I gotta take them and get them painted like I said.

Ok I have an opinion on those whole Big Ben thing it is kind of harsh in some people’s mind but it is none the less how I feel.

First things first Big Ben being hurt oh well I am not going to feel that sorry for the guy he is a legal adult and he made the choice to not wear a helmet and he paid the price for his decisions. Maybe it was a stupid decision; but it was his to make and I am not going to sit here and feel sorry for the guy.

I am not going to bash Big Ben over not wearing his helment he made the bed now he will have to lie in it.

Roethlisberger's absence would really hurt Steelers;

PFW asks associate editor Jeff Reynolds for his take on the NFL’s hottest topics.

Roethlisberger, injured in motorcycle accident, shouldn’t miss much time

According to reports, Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is recovering from multiple face fractures, a broken jaw and several bumps and bruises and is expected to be ready to go when the regular season begins Thursday night, Sept. 7 vs. Miami. Roethlisberger was injured when he collided with a moving vehicle Monday morning.

PFW: How would Roethlisberger’s absence impact the Steelers?

Reynolds: In a major way, and the effects would be evident immediately. Charlie Batch, the No. 2 quarterback, has a very limited arm, and the offense would be as basic as elementary reading class. Opponents could stack the line of scrimmage, force Batch to throw and would reduce offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt to having little impact by taking away the balance that allowed the Steelers to branch out and further develop the passing game in Roethlisberger’s second pro season. He’s more athletic, bigger, has a quicker release and sees the field better than Batch. With the passing game as a threat, the Steelers’ running game is much more effective. That part of the offense would all but disappear without Roethlisberger. Batch doesn’t respond well against the blitz and holds the ball waiting for a safe throw to uncovered receivers.

Thats totally wrong. Charlie has/had a strong arm. Now rest of the stuff, I agree with somewhat. But Charlie is not going to be as bad as Maddox was last year for sure.

Wow, this was played down a little. Anytime where you undergo surgery after an accident there is going to have some rehabilitation. Now, if Ben loses muscle/weight he won't be anywhere's close to playing at a high level. He is lucky to be alive, let alone play this year. If he does suit up on Sept. 7th I would probably pee myself.

I'll go a step further. If he does suit up on Sept 7th, I'd say someone is halfway to becoming a Saint (not the New Orleans kind).

He may well be out all year.

FOR anyone to claim he will not miss much time and will be there for the opener is to be TOTALLY STUPID. It will be WEEKS before any real estimate can be made.

Per PFT......

POSTED 2:06 p.m. EDT; UPDATED 2:22 p.m. EDT,June 13, 2006

BIG BEN WILL BE READY FOR FINS

According to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be able to play in the 2006 regular season opener on September 7 against the Miami Dolphins.

Citing unnamed sources, Bouchette reports that the injuries are confined to Roethlisberger's face, and that published reports of potentially serious knee and shoulder injuries were incorrect.

In short, Ben is one lucky *******. Dumb as a twice-baked potato, but lucky nevertheless.

Bouchette also reports that the surgery required seven hours due in part to efforts by surgeons to ensure a faster recovery time. Roethlisberger is expected to miss the preseason opener, but he will be able to participate in training camp.
