He wouldn't last two games behind Denvers OL. He couldn't get out of the preseason behind the Cowboys OL.

I think that is what Jerry is trying to convince Romo to do.
And it would explain his public statements about OC.
Dont leave, restructure to a more reasonable deal.
Being a backup behind the OL is the best thing for Tony's health.
Be a Cowboy for life and stay as OC/Coach after backuping for 2-3 years.

My eyes go crossed when I read about how a team owes a player something. The Cowboys owe Romo nothing.

Spot on.

Cowboys owe Romo nothing.

Whatever they do is in the team's best interest– not his.

After this season... Anyone's guess on what happens, but I doubt Romo is the backup in '17.

Sanchez will probably be the backup next year with Moore the #3.

I don't think its a financial decision at the end of the day, but I do think Romo is traded. They owe it to him to let him play somewhere instead of being a backup in Dallas. And given the dearth of QBs, Dallas should be able to get multiple premium draft picks back for trading him. It sad in a way, but it makes sense all the way around.
I don't know about "multiple" because of his age and injury history but I suspect that we will get a 1st and 3rd. Do I think he is worth more? Yes, but I doubt anyone will be willing to pay that

Here are few scenarios for next year

Cap Hit Scenarios...............2017.......................2018.................2019
Stays and plays....................24.7m....................25.2m.................23.7m
Restructures.........................16.7m....................29.2m.................27.7m
June 1st trade/cut.................10.7m*....................8.9m...............*(cap hit stay 24.7m until 6/1)
Trade/cut in Spring...............19.6m.....................0m
Retires*.................................19.6m....................0m...................*(could recover 5m from SB)

My Plan
Stays as Back-up..................15.7m...................11.7m..................7.2m
Traded after June 1st............10.7m*...................8.9m.................*(13m in cap relief in March)
Traded/cut in 2018.................15.7m..................16.9m

I appreciate you taking the time to put these numbers together for the rest of us, thanks!

If Sam Bradford brings back a #1 pick when he is owned 24 Million over two years, you would think at least one team would offer that much in salary and picks for Romo.

I think that was an incredibly unique situation, and the Eagles were incredibly lucky to find a team in the position the Vikings were in.

When Bridgewater went down, the Vikings had a Hall of Fame running back, their offensive line intact, and a Super Bowl caliber defense. The only part of the championship equation they were lacking was the quarterback. And they were willing to pay through the nose to get one.

Not only that, but there was a coach on the Vikings' staff who knew and loved Sam Bradford and campaigned to get him there.

I don't know if there is a similar 'perfect storm' out there where a team would do the same thing to get Romo.

Sanchez is good comedic fodder, but its hard to do better as far as backup QBs. I dont think he would take much to sign either. He wont sniff Chase Daniels money. Probably could resign him for less then we payed Orton

I dont think other teams will give Tony a premium deal given his age and injury history. We thought his $50 million deal was a bit too expensive and turns out we were not wrong. Dan Marino wanted a ring too but at some point those shoes get hung up and there is a time you can be productive but not consistent due to the body getting damaged; and thats the time a players status become questionable. On downs where the other team knows we have to pass and pass for big yardage, I'd say give Tony the reps as we think his long passing is better than Dak's. Use both quarterbacks in the game.

Exactly. Romo has been to more Pro Bowls than Bradford ( of course that is easy since Bradford hasn't been to any), he has been to the playoffs, led his team to two divisional titles that I can remember, has more 4th qtr comebacks than any other qb, etc. The only thing that Bradford has over Romo is age but both are injury prone. The Cowboys should not trade Romo unless they get at least 1st rd pick and more, imo.

I don't think it's about Bradford being better than Romo, he obviously isn't. But it's more about finding that team who thinks that they're a quarterback away like the Vikings did.

The money for Romo is secondary. He wants a chance to win a ring. Denver is the right choice for him. And I agree he is traded unless Dak shows he indeed has more than a tiny bit of rookie blood in him.

Denver makes the most sense on paper, but I have to wonder if Elway would pull the trigger on trading for Romo rather than sticking with what they've got in Siemien or year two of Paxton Lynch. Or of Denver has the cap space to afford Romo.

I agree with that, but the organization also has a real affinity for Romo. And I think that love could be a factor in the decision-making, to some degree, however large or small.

What are they paying Sanchez now? $2 million? I don't see how a year of not playing at all would qualify him for a raise over that.

Given the contract price I don't think so.
At best a 2nd and conditional 3rd.

High risk, questionable return on a 36 year old QB who may be one hit away from forced retirement. The question should be which team will be willing to take this risk.

Tony is Jerry's son. Until we find a replacement at backup that isn't Kellen Moore, doubt Tony is traded or cut.

I think that Jerry would like to work something out to keep Romo around, but I think that they would trade him if he was insistent on starting.

I don't know who can afford it or not, but Denver would be the obvious one. They're a quarterback away right now.

No matter what, if we trade him before June 1st the cap hit will be 19.6m

There will have to be some cooperation to get maximum benefits for everyone
You know the cap very well but looking at under the cap it looks like we save 5 mil on an early cut or trade and 14 mil with a June 1 cut

Houston would be a great fit for him

They would, but it would mean the ownership and front office publicly and financially admitting that the Osweiler deal was a complete debacle. We already know that, but teams don't like to admit it.

Given what they're on the hook for with Osweiler, I'm not sure they would or could pay Romo.
