Romo Scenarios and their cap hits

According to Spotrac, his 2017 salary of $16 million is guaranteed.
Correct and that gets traded like DMurray and Maxwell from PHI

Fitzpatrick got 13m....Cousins 20m.......Osweiler 17m

someone will pay

And we can hold out until TC to see if any injuries pop up.......what if Cam or Ryan or Wilson gets hurt in August....it will take cooperation but I can see DAL and Tony working together

Exactly, like Stash pointed out - the Vikings didn't overpay for Bradford until Bridgewater went down. In that kind of scenario a contender would definitely move a #2 and a conditional pick for Romo.

Nothing can be done until June 1st anyways without taking the full 19.6m cap hit

No one is in a hurry

I disagree. Nobody's paying for that. The league can see Houston's mistake as well as they can, nobody is signing up to take that mistake off of their hands.

A one year 16m gamble is nothing compared to 35m guaranteed for a question mark

Have you seen the QBs for CLE, CHI, SF, LA this year?

I have. And I've also see Osweiler play terribly, throwing for under 100 yards in his most recent game. And he's also been able to shut down Deandre Hopkins, something opposing cornerbacks only wish they could do. He's been abysmal.

And I still don't think there's a team in the league who would sign up to take Osweiler off of the Texans' hands, much less at the cost of $16 million guaranteed.

I see no way where anyone - no matter what they're current QB situation is - trades to take on that deal. Houston's mistake will be theirs alone.

We can amicably agree to disagree on that subject.

If Romo is released I have no doubt someone will pony up on a 2 to 3 year deal for Romo. As for trade his talent my be worth a 1st but at his age coming off some serious injuries I highly doubt anyone would make an offer any better than a mid to late rd pick. More than likely they will allows Cowboys to release him.

1- without Tony DAL can still restructure 5 top contracts and get 30m+
2- plenty and Martin doesn't have to be signed until 2019
3- 15m is a bargain for a QB like Romo and my plan would guarantee him 23m if traded...he has 0m guaranteed right now.....23m is still hard to turn down

Great.
Excellent job!

Sounds like there is enough money to bring in a DE or so, even if we bring back a CB or 2, a SS or 2, a WR or 2, as well as DT Mcclain...

I think Witten is in the top 5, they may or may not want to rework him?
But there are others to restructure so that sounds good...
Romo can stay or be traded, depending on how everyone feels.

Given enough cap, Romo can wait for an open competition in 2017.
It would not kill Dak to be backup if he loses the competition for a year or so.
I still think Romo is better off as a backup given his health.

DAL made a mistake by not trading DWare.......several teams jumped all over him......they won't make the same mistake with Romo

In a perfect world Romo stays here as backup to Dak and signs a cap friendly contract. But I highly doubt thats going to happen. Romo wants to play and has some good years left.

I think they will part ways though - just like what happened to Ware.

Agreed, but there is another option.
Open competition in 2017.

Loser is backup, will be supportive and does not backstab.
If Romo wins and gets injured AGAIN, he should willing be the backup.
That would even for his own good.

No it isn't correct......I showed the Restructure scenario(it is spread over the 3 years remaining on his contract)....it would lower his 2017 cap hit to 16.7m.......they will choose this over a straight release

I was assuming the contract is restructured to 4 years.
Is that allowed?

Well I think all after this year guaranteed money is already paid to Romo. Thus Dallas can cut him and not owe him anything after this year. They could cut him and create another cap friendly contract just to keep Romo here as backup. But most likely that won't happen. Romo will possible retire, get traded or were going to cut him.

This is where I lose most people but DAL can create over 50m in cap space with minimal cuts

Restructures and a couple pay cuts and they have the room to do anything....there is nothing scary or risky about kicking cap money down the road........it is smart and effective.....an interest free loan with cash back savings along the way

The problem is they will not sign a big FA anymore...those days are over.....they will sign Mo to a fair deal...4/24m but not many other big signings

Romo will not start ever again over Dak unless he gets hurt......Dak will not sit next year

Yes, nothing wrong with kicking the can down the road if there is an exit in a few years.
In 4-5 years, the team may need a salary cap reboot, as certain players retire/leave like Romo, Witten and then Dez.
Skins did that for years and no one realize how they get away with it.

We have the next franchise QB, and there will be a need within 5-7 years for a reboot of some sort.
Even the OL will have a certain shelf life, though longer than most (knock on wood).

FO did go for the kill with Hardy, so I am hoping they will not let the window slip away.
If Romo won a competition next camp, I dont think the damage will be that severe unlike switch QBs now.
We shall see, but I dont think it is a bad idea (luxury) to have 2 franchise QBs.

Here are few scenarios for next year

Cap Hit Scenarios...............2017.......................2018.................2019
Stays and plays....................24.7m....................25.2m.................23.7m
Restructures.........................16.7m....................29.2m.................27.7m
June 1st trade/cut.................10.7m*....................8.9m...............*(cap hit stay 24.7m until 6/1)
Trade/cut in Spring...............19.6m.....................0m
Retires*.................................19.6m....................0m...................*(could recover 5m from SB)

My Plan
Stays as Back-up..................15.7m...................11.7m..................7.2m
Traded after June 1st............10.7m*...................8.9m.................*(13m in cap relief in March)
Traded/cut in 2018.................15.7m..................16.9m
By the way....great threat @bkight13!!!

I highly doubt you will get anyone willing to offer much. Ware was 32 and Romo 36 coming off back issues. No doubt a team would be willing to pick him up and sign him to a 2 year deal but they are not going to give top draft pick to get him knowing Dallas will have to eat a big contract by keeping him. Romo is the highest paid player on the team Dallas can't afford to keep him at that price tag, not when Cowboy have issues on defense like getting a pass rush. The money saved on Romo deal would allow them to go after a top DE
