this discussion was not about general team salary cap. It was about savings of releasing or trading romo.
There is zero difference in TOTAL cap savings or TOTAL dead money if he is cut or traded.

eyes of beholder. Is 3rd round pick more valuable than 10 million in savings? Some have pointed out that the savings wont be available until June 2nd but Dallas still has ways of using that money:

1) resign Martin
2) have cap space available for trade during season
There is no 10M savings.

That only changes when dead money hits the cap. The total dead money is the same either way. The option that gives you more cap space in 2017 then gives you less in 2018. The total is the same.

for 2017 there is lower signing bonus absorption if released compared to trade in which full signing bonus must be absorbed in 2017.
It all has to be absorbed either all in 2017 or split between 2017 and 2018. The total amount is the same. You don't save money, you just defer it.

Tony is in the perfect position in the the twilight of his career.

Restructure his contract and remain our back up for the next few years and get multiple rings.

Trust me...we might not get one this year...but uh..we are about ready to get plenty in the next few years.

They can take the full hit in 2017 for trading Romo and still create over 30M in cap space.

Example:
1. Create 10M in cap space by Deferring 10M to 2018 by making Romo June 1st cut.

2. Create 10M in cap space by deferring 10M of money in Tyron's contract to 2018 AND take total 19.6M cap hit in 2017 from trading Romo.

Either way you create 10M in cap space in 2017 by deferring.

Oh yeah I agree. I still think the only way we trade him is if we can get salary relief.

If a team offers us a 3rd but we have to eat all of his remaining guarantees, we will probably just cut him for the savings.
He is wrong. There is no savings, just deferral.

well thats the big question because it might turn out Dallas can't use that 10 million savings until after June 1st and FA period will be settled by then. I am sure Stephan Jones will find way to use those savings maybe toward contract extensions.
There is no 10M savings, only deferral.

Your assuming Romo is open to any trade. In your scenario an injury would need to occur to team to wait that long to get their starting QB. Considering Romo has short list of teams (maybe Denver or Arizona only) any trade likely happens before Draft. My premise stands. The conditional pick needs to be more valuable than 9 million savings.
There is no savings, only deferral.

They can trade him in March. There is no need to wait.

sorry bud but it doesn't work that way with Jerry. He is loyal to fault and will absolutely protect Romo and not send him to bad team. If Romo were open to any team it would change everything and I would be working phone right now with San Fran. But Tony is special to Jerry and he will handle this with kid gloves.
SF could easily be a contender with Romo and the right Head Coach.

really? I counted 8 who were significant contributors this season.
Of those 8 who are significant contributors, how many are going to be sitting on the market after June 1st? That list has absolutely nothing to do with a post June 1 cut and you are confusing people who aren't well versed in how the salary cap works.

If they want to re-sign those guys AND Romo is a June 1st cut, they are going to need to find that money through restructures and cuts. In fact, trading Romo would actually be a bigger help in re-signing some of those since the 5 million would be available sooner.
