Romo will likely pass 30,000 career yards this season.

As an amusing sidenote, Romo was actually very fortunate to have last season count as a top 10 season - he had a pretty mediocre year by his standards.
He was also unfortunate not to get in 11 more pass attempts before being knocked out against the Giants in 2010, otherwise he'd have 7 top 10's already.

And yet in all this hero worship, it is clear that if this team is to succeed and make a mark in the post season, it needs to be more balanced and Romo throw less.

His yards per game and season are not as important as controling the clock and protecting the defense.

Now I know there is someone in this thread who posted a stat that the Cowboys were something like sixth in the league as far as time of possession in drives.

But as I have said many times over, bare stats don't always tell the story.

Now factor in penalties which would reset plays and add to clock time in a drive, as well as the team being notorious for snapping the ball at the last second of the play clock. Those two issues would factor in a great deal with the naked stat of drive time. And in that portion is where the first stat obscures the truth.

Now add in that this team struggled in the red zone and you come closer to why the team did not make the play-offs.

So in the grand scheme of things, keeping the Dallas defense off the field by a successful run game will go further in pushing this team toward a play-off berth instead of Romo throwing for 5000 yards.

As a fan of the team, I am more interested in post season success rather than one player getting records.

Emmitt's rushing record may someday fall.

Those five Super Bowl trophies belong to Dallas FOREVER.

Thus this is why I scratch my head at those who hail Romo and that seems to be the only thing important to them.

I like Tony and am thankful he plays for Dallas.

But I am a fan of the team.

True - guess the two oddities balance each other out. Although I'd give the slight edge to the 2012 quirk, as it allows him to keep adding to the consecutive top 10 seasons streak as long as he's able to.

And what will all that mean if he continues to miss the playoffs and stay at 1 playoff win in the next 3-4 years.?

Well that means someone like McNabb should be a HOF lock then

This is a bit of a strange example in my opinion. McNabb may well make it. But Romo is better statistically as a passer. Case and point this is McNabb's rank in passer rating through his career:

18,7,7,16,4,16,4,9,14,12,24

He only had four years in the top 8. This is his rank in YPA:

30,19,25,19,5,13,2,15,18,7,15

If you are curious here's Romo:

Passer Rating 5,5,8,8,4,10
Yards Per Attempt 1,2,6,4,7,8

The two areas where McNabb statistically had an edge on Romo are INT% and rushing. Romo is superior in pretty much every other category by a significant margin. In fact, I think ignoring playoff success would actually hurt McNabb's case a great deal. The crux of McNabbs HOF case is his teams made it to the NFC championship game 4 years in a row. Not his career numbers.

I'm not saying that this is all that significant in terms of Romo's overall career resume; just having fun discussing stats. If we're talking HoF potential, obviously Romo has a long way to go in terms of playoff success.
