The problem is not what he did or is doing in Mexico. The problem is the perception a lot of people have about his trip down there. If this affects his game then obviously a lot of people will be upset The problem is it is nearly impossible to pinpoint a possible bad game (God forbid!) next week with this trip.
If he does have a bad game, then people will point fingers regardless. Therefore it is best to avoid certain scenarios for people to finger point. I think it would have been best to avoid this until after the post season because at that point you are off the radar so to speak with the fans. But it is his life. This entire league is supported by the fans. Randy Moss wasn't brought here because of issues along with other players for other teams. A lot of it isnt about talent but perception. If Tony starts to look like he is losing focus, then its perfectly natural to assume his personal antics during the season will make people wonder and I dont see the problem with that when you are making millions upon millions.
