Let me state clearly, I am not suggesting we go back to the 4-3,, I like the 3-4, but if it is between hiring a bright young coach and keeping the 3-4,, I go with the coach. We can play the 4-3 tomorrow and be successful. Spears was an all American at LSU in the 4-3, Ware comes from a 4-3, Hatcher, Ellis, Ratliff,, all 4-3 guys..

Now if they bring in a bonifide 3-4 guy, I am all for keeping it and ramping it up. But i wouldn't pass on Rivera because he is a 4-3 guy.
Very well put.

I would just say that I would prefer sticking with the 3-4.

Maybe Rex Ryan? Both are good coaches. Couldn't lose with either one IMO.

niether one of them is sure things, both could fail easily

that said, the fact that Rivera has interviewed well a couple of times now is a good sign...Ryan I'm not so sure about

For most of the season yes

You think bringing in a top defensive coach that was great at the 34 may make a difference?

I think we're on the cusp of a Super Bowl and I don't want major changes that will set us back. We have the talent, we just need the coaching and the schemes. We don't need nor want a major overhaul.

5 of the top 10 defenses in the league were 3-4 defenses. I'd say that was a pretty good showing for the 3-4 defense in 2006.

I would like to see a guy who's played the game.................recently!
No more "career coaches" and stuffed shirt administrator's. No more Gaily's or Campo's or Parcells'.
A guy like Singletary or, of course Cowher, to light a serious fire. I want a hand clapping, back patting, sideline stomping, spitting and chewing on nails type of guy. I want a young guy who can actually communicate with these players and not patronize them and treat them like necessary cogs in some greater machine. You know, a coach who knows his players by name and not "we're working with the player", or "the number 9 and the number 25 are working on it". I want a guy who could go out and have beers with some players now and then. Not some mummy who cut his teeth in NY two decades ago in the non-FA/non-salary cap days. Get a Jeff Fischer or a John Gruden or a Pete Carrol even.
Rule of thumb: Anyone who needs a bra and a walker to get around need not apply!
I'm sick and tired of this parade we've had in Dallas of fossilized, stiff, emotionless zombies we've had the last 11 years.

What a lot of people don't know about Rivera is his philosophy. He is a teacher. He makes sure his players UNDERSTAND what they are doing as opposed to memorizing a playbook. He believes that if his players understand concepts then they can better adapt to game time situations. Rivera believes that if the players understand the concepts behind plays, it can also help them remember more plays.

I would love to hire Rivera for this reason. There are very few "teachers" still left in this game. There are a lot of coaches that can bark orders but as Parcells showed, if his players don't understand what they are doing, then intimidation doesn't really benefit players.
Good post. Memorization doesn't lend itself to flexibility when things go wacko. This is one of the best comments I've seen lately on what a team needs in a coach.
