Round 1 Tyron Smith Thoughts

Man, your a good poster and I like hearing what you think... but how can you say that Peterson won't improve the football team?

I've never seen anyone as focused in on one player as you are Smith. I like Smith as a prospect and think he'd be a good pick for Dallas... but man, you are making him the second coming of Anthony Munoz and over valuing (IMO) him by a lot.

Every post you make is only about how much we need Smith and how little anyone else can do to help.

Like I said, I like you as a poster, but man are you going to be crushed if we don't land Smith.

lol ive been saying the same thing . Kid turns every thread into a t.smith or bust discussion. not going to change his mind . There's no quit in this guy I'll give him credit for that.

If Peterson is tops on the board then you go get him if the trading partner is there....

I think when our pick comes up at #9 Smith will be the guy and in no way does that make me unhappy:)

I just feel like we can't keep ignoring the OL.

I love Peterson as well Hos, but I'm not enamored with the idea of trading up to get him when there's other holes to fill. I like the assessment of his talent level. I really do, but I odn't think he's the thing that will put us over the top right now.

I'd trade next year's #1 if it meant getting Peterson and Smith. That's a no brainer decision.

Add Michael Huff in free agency as well? I'd be needing a cold shower.

41gy on Smith and Hoss on Peterson. Cannot say either is more in love with their pet cat.

What happens if we somehow miss out on both of them?

Wow, those are a couple of interesting comments. Are you saying that the Cowboys had Suh rated higher as a prospect than Aikman? That would be a big surprise to me. As I recall, Suh wasn't even the highest ranked prospect on their board last year (I think that was Bradford).
IIRC we even had McCoy ahead of Suh. (Several teams did, which I thought was completely insane.)

I would be ecstatic if we got Peterson, but I just dont see any way it happens. I agree that hes the #1 talent in this draft.

I just dont see the hype in Smith though. I dont see a huge gap between him and an OT we can get at #40. If we draft an OT at #9 that player is pretty much slated as our LT from day 1. I really dont want an unproven rookie at that position, nor do I see a need to move Free. Drafting a RT #9 is almost a waste of a pick in my opinion, 40 is much more reasonable. After Smith there is Costanza, Sherrod, Carimi, Solder, Ijalana, and Barksdale that could all come in and most likely start from day 1 at RT for us. And 1 of them is sure to be there, no need to reach at #9.

I believe 1 of Peterson, Prince, Miller, Dareus, or Fairley will fall to us at #9. Everyone of them would be a difference maker from day 1, Smith is far from a sure thing.

Now, some teams probably have Peterson rated number 1 overall. It has been reported. I read where 7 personnel directors have A.J. Green rated number 1 overall. You can make a case for Von Miler and Marcell Dareus being rated number 1. Miller has a chance to be a dominate player at his position, too. I left him out. Dareus is a safe pick who has been described as a rolling set of butcher knives.

Robert Quinn and Tyron Smith are two players who are going to be rated very high on teams' boards due to their huge upside and game film. Cam Newton, if he hits, is going to hit big. Fairley was still the most dominant defensive linemen in the country last year, despite the concerns about him.

This all comes down to what the individual teams think and how they go about building their teams. Scouts Inc (ESPN) rates Peterson as a 97 and Smith as a 95. I'm simply saying that the Cowboys would be better off to let their board fall to them (Tyron Smith), than to give up picks in order to trade up for a CB.

The offensive line will crumble like cheap bread if Dallas doesn't really get serious about rebuilding it. They seem to be in excellent position to do that in this draft, if they just anchor and stay put. The offense desperately needs a young, athletic, strong, blue chip player in its offensive line. The 97 player may be the highest rated player on Dallas' board, but Smith (the 95) is the player that would be the 20 year old cornerstone to rebuild the offensive line. If the offensive line was solidified, you could make a better case for moving up for Peterson, imo. Again, that isn't the case, not even close. It's simply getting greedy and putting too much stock in Peterson and the CB position and continuing a pattern of neglecting the offensive line and sticking it with the Robert "Busters" of the world, the generic brand, if you will.

First, the team has too many needs to start giving up picks, and the last thing it needs is Jerry Jones moving all over the draft board to recoup picks, so they can draft the Robert "Busters" of the world. Second, winning football and being competitive in football starts up front. If you are not strong in your lines or fronts, you will not win in the NFL. You sure will not win like Jerry Jones wants to win.

Again, I respect Peterson as a player, and he for sure is one of the best players in the draft, however, when he gets this "god like" status, I have to respectfully disagree. A.J. Green, Marcell Dareus, Von Miller, Patrick Peterson...All those guys belong on the same line as Peterson does, imo.

Then, you have Robert Quinn and Tyron Smith nipping right on their heels, literally, in this draft. These are two extremely gifted and tight players.

I'll end with this. If the guy in New England wanted to come up for a player in the top 10, he isn't coming for Green or Peterson. He's coming for Dareus or Smith.

And with that, I'm putting a zip on my lip in here. I'm gone. ;)

Interesting I wonder who mayock thinks were taking.

Offensive tackles were a favored commodity in the first round of last year's draft. Trent Williams was taken fourth overall by the Commanders, Russell Okung went two picks later to the Seahawks and Anthony Davis was selected 11th by the 49ers.

Don't expect a similar run on tackles this year — at least in the top of the first round.

USC's Tyron Smith is one of just a handful of offensive tackles projected to go in the first round. (AP Photo)"I don't think any offensive tackle will go before (pick) 13 this year," NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock said, "and they might not go that high."

"Overall, this is a mediocre offensive tackle group," an AFC scouting coordinator added. "Some solid starters will come out of this class, but no elite or special players."

The scouting director said his team has given first-round grades to four tackles — Boston College's Anthony Castonzo, Wisconsin's Gabe Carimi, USC's Tyron Smith and Colorado's Nate Solder — but they are all mid-to-late first-round grades.

Most mock drafts also have Mississippi State's Derek Sherrod going in the first round.

I think we can agree on one thing: this draft is NOT deep in CB's or OT's. It comes down to the Cowboys thinking they can get a quality corner, or a quality OT in the early to mid rounds.

The bottom line is, nothing is guaranteed in the draft. There is no sure thing, but it is certain that Peterson is the highest rated player on Dallas' board. I wouldn't be upset with Peterson or Smith, but let's be honest, who were Green Bay's and Pittsburgh's OT's last year in the Super Bowl?

Chad Clifton and Bryan Bulaga...Jonathan Scott and THE HOTEL

If you're telling me that you NEED a "blue-chip," franchise offensive tackle, then you're mistaken in my opinion. Look at the Raiders, they found Jared Veldheer in the 3rd round and he's their franchise LT. The Rams drafted Rodger Saffold in the 2nd round who turned out to be a gem. The point is, Tyron Smith isn't the end all, be all. A player like Ben Ijalana, Derek Sherrod, Marcus Gilbert, Joseph Barksdale, James Carpenter, etc, could turn out to be great for a long period of time.

I believe we could draft a Joseph Barksdale or James Carpenter in the 3rd or 4th round, and they would STILL be an upgrade over Colombo. I'd like to draft a tackle who has the ability to play OT or OG. We need interior help just as much as we need OT help. A player like John Moffitt would be perfect for us.

This is exactly the point I was trying to make. Its debatable whether or not Smith could even come in and start over Colombo. Hes very young and still on the smallish side. This team needs to be in win now mode. Drafting a guy like Smith is purely for the future hoping that he 1 day becomes your LT. Right now theres no way we could go into next season with him as our starting LT and hope to have SB aspirations. We are in a unique situation where we have a good chance to compete next year and have a top 10 pick. If we can add a difference making defensive player we have to do it, no question. Again, the difference between Smith and Sherrod, Solder, Carimi and Costanza is not extremely evident aside from the fact that Smith is younger and may or may not have more upside. I would much rather see us take a stud D player at #9 and give up a 4th round pick to move up 10 or less spots to take a Camiri or Sherrod than reach for Smith at #9.
Just my 2 cents though.

I think this draft actually offers some very good depth at corner and OT; although you're not seeing 3 or 4 guys as consensus top 20 picks, the value is there. You could target starters all the way through the end of the 2nd round.

The draft is much weaker at safety, ILB and TE.

While I'm not sure about the Cowboys actual rating of Aikman, it seemed the general consensus at the time was that he was the highest QB prospect since Elway. So it seems Aikman would have been ranked much higher than Suh. Perhaps I'm not understanding your comments here.
No, I'm saying they don't rate players they can't reach and they couldn't reach Suh.

Totally disagree.

I dont.

Peterson does nothing to fix the OL, nor does he really do anything to fix the lack of pass rush.

Peterson, Miller, Green, etc... those guys are all Elite Blue Chip prospects. You're overrating Smith if you think he belongs in the same category as those guys. Most rankings I have seen place Smith outside of the top 15 players in the draft. If he were a legit Blue Chip Tackle there is not way we'd be the first team to consider taking him at 9, Elite Tackles are right up there with QBs and Pass Rushers as the most valuable positions in the draft, they go top 3-5.

IMO, Smith's game film says 2nd Round but the fact that he's so young and has all that potential is pushing him into top 15 consideration.
