Roy Williams "sorry" for fourth-quarter drop

"Detroit Mode"?

I've heard it all now.

It's been almost two seasons and people think he still has a "losing" mentality?

Besides, it isn't like the Cowboys have won anything but yet you have guys like Miles Austin contributing.

Roy Williams just isn't taking advantage of the opportunities he's been given. He got his contract and probably just isn't hungry anymore.

Long before he showed up in Dallas, I remember Troy Aikman talking about how bad of a route runner he was.

Then you have Michael Irvin come out a few weeks ago and say he approached Roy Williams and Miles Austin during Training Camp to give them some advice and one guy soaked it up and the other guy blew him off.

Wanna take a guess who it was that blew him off?

See bolded above for examples of "Detroit Mode".

He just doesn't understand the urgency of winning, and what it means to "have to catch the ball" when it's late in the season and we are trying to upset the only undefeated team in the NFC.

There are critical moments in each game when "stars" step up and make the play, ... when champions are defined.

"I tried, I'm sorry"

That don't get it in Dallas.

Ask Ware, ask Romo, ask Spencer, ask Austin, ... they showed up and made big plays when we needed them.

WIN, .. no excuses.

WV, I just have to disagree with that.

Roy Williams has played in big time programs all of his life.

He played at Odessa Permian in High school. Football is so huge, they made a movie about it.

He played at the University of Texas at Austin and that is a big time program where losing is just unacceptable.

Roy Williams is a highly paid Professional and he should understand that "you must make plays" when given the opportunity.

Again, I know Dallas isn't Detroit, but it isn't like we have a huge tradition of winning lately, even though we have had above .500 Seasons.

I like Roy Williams because he is a native Texan but hated the trade and every time he drops a pass or catches it for once and does is dumb first down celebration, makes me dislike the trade even more.

You are either hungry as a lion or you are not.

I still root for Roy. I want him to turn this around and be an impact player for the Cowboys. It's just this non-chalant attitude - "sorry, happens sometimes" That just burns me up.

How about, "I got to make that catch, thats what I am paid for. There is no excuse for dropping that ball that was in perfect position at the critical point in the game. The fans expect better than that and they deserve it"

I would have loved that response!

That has got to be his attitude- its just like a CB who just got beaten for a TD. He has to shrug it off and forget about ASAP. Should not say this though- because you get a lot of heat from stupid people.

His attitude is whatever makes him sleep well at night.

He's so quick to throw out excuses its almost sickening.

"Not catchable"

"It was in the lights"

Roy Williams is becoming one of my least favorite players on the team and it has less to do with his play than it does all the excuses.

His attitude is pathetic at times.

As much as I hate Roy Williams dropping passes, you DO NOT want your receivers to start or continually apologizing every time they drop a ball. Talk about lacking confidence.

I think the spotlight is too intense for Roy Williams. If he feels the need to apologize for every drop, he's done.

...nice observations...and looking back over the last six games, Roy has been better although his catch rate is still lagging...when Austin has a big day Roy disappears...Romo simply trusts him more...when Austin sees good coverage then Roy re-emerges...PHI, GB, NY for example...Romo only targeted him twice before the fourth quarter at New Orleans...Austin was targeted 13 times with 6 incomplete...the difference is the catch rate and the clutch once again...would he have caught 7 if he had been targeted 13 times?...well, on second thought, don't answer that one!

...yes it's unnerving to see the drop at a crucial time but games like he had versus NY is why Jones can still give him more leash roam...like it or not, had Romo not overthrew him, it's likely he would've ended up with 3 td receptions against NY...

...his catch rate, yds/game and td rate are all better over the second-half of the season but what he was paid factors heavily in what he's expected to do...i'm afraid he will not live up to the expectations, for no other reason than the man currently ahead of him on the stat sheet...we all better learn to accept that because it's the clinical definition of insanity to think otherwise...he's a teaser...and considering the 100% catch rate of Ogletree so far this year, next season could bring considerably more discontent to Roy Williams...that young man seems to have a knack for tough grabs...

That's cool, and maybe I'm wrong. But for whatever reason, he just seems to be going along for the ride, .. when we need him to be a big time contributor.

His attitude needs adjusted.

Just think how everyone would have loved it, and him, had he made that big 3rd down catch.
The play called was right, he was open, Romo threw it perfect, ... FIRST DOWN !!, .. but no, wait, Williams dropped it. Now the offensive juggernaut Saints get the ball back.

"Oops, sorry fellows, .. maybe next time." That was good enough in Detroit. It didn't matter. It matters here.

I hope he starts to get it soon, we could sure use him in the next few weeks.

Don't apologize, Roy. It makes you look weak. Flo doesn't apologize for missed blocks that get Tony clobbered.

Even though Roy's quote has put yet another bullseye on his back...it is the truth! He can't dwell on it and has to move on...and EVERYONE drops passes from time to time. Shoot, Miles & Witten dropped passes in that game (but they weren't as magnified because of the timing of 11's drop). His contract and the picks given up for him will be an albatross around his neck until he produces "like a #1" but as long as Tony has someone he can rely on (19, 82), Roy can stay in a complementary role, IMO.

Roy Williams "sorry" for fourth-quarter drop

Needing a third-down conversion in the fourth quarter from the Dallas 46, Tony Romo went to Roy Williams on a slant and the wide receiver could not come up with a big catch, forcing a punt.

"I dropped a ball, sorry," Williams said. "I'll make it up this next game. Sorry. Happens sometimes."

Williams is right, drops will happen, but that's a little too nonchalant, isn't it? Williams has dropped a few passes this year, like the big one at Green Bay. I don't know if I wanted to see him beat himself up but I wanted something other than, "Sorry."

"I'm not a guy who loses confidence in my hands or whatever," Williams said. "I feel I still have the best hands in this league. You've got to feel that way. I feel that way. It happens to the best of them."

On the Cowboys' next drive after New Orleans cut the gap to 24-17, Romo faced another critical third-down play from the Dallas 23. He threw another slant. This time it went to Miles Austin and he picked up 32 yards.

Just saying.

Just catch it.

Both places where superior size and skill can make up for sub-standard effort.

Agreed.

I think the city of Dallas wants Roy Williams to succeed, but his comments and most importantly, his lack of production on the field is really driving some people crazy.

You know what really sucks?

The more passes he drops the less and less Tony Romo will trust him.

I wonder if he is just putting too much pressure on himself?

Maybe he thinks to himself, "I am making all of this money and yet the kid across from me is putting up major numbers"?

I don't know what it is but he will be hated even more then Patrick Crayton if he drops passes during this Playoff Push.

Personally, I think things are setup so perfectly for him. Teams will start to pay more attention to Miles Austin and with his size and speed, he should be able to dominate lesser corners and win 1 on 1 matchups.

Roy Williams just has to take advantage because at some point, Mr. Kevin Ogletree will not be denied.

No they aren't as maginified because Witten and Austin make plays every week.

Roy doesn't and when given chances, he usually flops.

Agreed, but the fact remains that Roy Williams is been around programs that demand winning all of his life.

I don't buy into the "Detroit Mode" argument.

What I do buy into is the "Hunger and Desire Mode".

Michael Irvin could've started in Detroit, then went to a winning team and been successful and still had that "desire" and "determination".

I haven't seen that in Roy Williams.

What a weak attitude.

Go back and watch Witten's post-game interview after the Chargers game.

It is painful to watch, he is hurting big time!! It hurt me to watch him.

Williams needs to understand what that type of emotion, and commitment is.

I'm still a fan. However, like most fans of Roy these days its getting a little hard. I'm not concerned with his attitude. I dont need players having the perfect answers that i may want to hear. I didnt question Romo's fire when he made his comments after the eagles beating last year. I wont hate Roy because he said "Sorry". Now of course i think Roy needs to make that catch. It was a huge drop and makes me lose confidence in his hands. I dont expect players to say they dont believe in themselves. That would be much worse than "sorry".

And guys please lets calm down on the Ogletree talk. How many plays has he even played for us this year? Every time he catches a pass you have a group of Ogletree groupies on here saying he is the answer. We have no reason he is a great or even good receiver at this level. We would have better justification to say Crayton should be in there. Or Hurd.

With every drop, Tony should trust him less. I would. I hope Tony asks him to take a seat if he continues to drop passes.

Its beyond laughable at this point. You can look around the league and see guys who make those catches and make catches 10X more difficult.

Rookies, old *** veterans and everything in between. Ogletree made a hell of a catch and yet Roy drops ones that hit him straight up?

Besides, if TO was still here, the emergence of Austin probably wouldn't have happen like it has. Of course, maybe that would have allowed the Cowboys to sign him long term for cheaper! :laugh2:

LOL

It would have been nice to see TO and Austin running down each sideline with Witten and Crayton underneath.
