Free agent running back Chris Johnson looks as if he will end up signing with the Arizona Cardinals after a visit this weekend. That takes one more back off the market for the Dallas Cowboys who are dealing with a host of injuries in the offensive backfield. With that, rumor has it that the Cowboys could end up turning to either recently-reinstated Ray Rice or Pierre Thomas.

ESPN reported that Johnson went for a workout and a physical with the Cardinals this weekend. It is expected that if all went well and the two sides could work out a deal, Johnson will end up heading to Arizona.

***snip***

Now, the Cowboys may really look into signing a free-agent running back before it gets much further into training camp. Ray Rice is still out there, but the Cleveland Browns have been reported as having a good bit of interest in him.

Sports World Report states that Pierre Thomas could become a viable option for the Cowboys. The former New Orleans Saints’ running back may not be an every-down back, but he is a great pass catcher coming out of the backfield, and the Cowboys could use that to their advantage.

The Dallas Cowboys are dealing with far too many running back injuries, and even first preseason game starter Gus Johnson is a bit banged up. Options such as Ray Rice and Pierre Thomas are out there, but a move needs to be made quickly.

Ray Rice would bring a distraction and PR nightmare like nothing we've seen in Dallas. He could fracture the locker room and the criticism the signing would undoubtedly bring especially after adding Hardy isn't worth the headache. Signing him would be a huge mistake can't see the Cowboys going near him. The poster boy for domestic violence isn't what we want representing the Dallas Cowboys.

Dallas Cowboys Rumors: Ray Rice Signed if Arizona Cardinals, Chris Johnson Deal Done? Pierre Thomas Option After Darren McFadden, Joseph Randle Injuries

Former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice avoids a tackle during a 2013 game."

The Dallas Cowboys have some injury concerns after their first preseason game and the team is going to need to make some tough decisions in the coming days. After the team's game against the San Diego Chargers, they officially have four injured running backs. Darren McFadden is sitting on the PUP list. Lance Dunbar has a sprained ankle and Joseph Randle and Gus Johnson are dealing with minor issues. While team vice president stands by the idea of not adding anyone on the free agent market, will the pressure get to him?

The Cowboys believe they have the roster to replace DeMarco Murray at the running back position, but so far no one is healthy enough to do it. With four running backs injured, the Cowboys will likely be forced to sign someone off the market and the options could begin to shrink as several teams are dealing with injuries early.

Earlier in the offseason, Jones told the media that Chris Johnson was on the short-list of veterans the Cowboys would chase if needed. However, Jay Glazer of FOX Sports is reporting Johnson is set to visit the Arizona Cardinals with a contract likely in the near future. In major need of running back health, Johnson will take the team physical and could be off the market before the next preseason game.

If the Cowboys are going to sign someone, they need to do so quickly. The Cleveland Browns need running back help. The Washington Commanders suffered a season-ending injury in their first preseason game. The options will get smaller. With plenty of pressure on the Cowboys to bounce back from a successful year in 2014, the team could easily make the move for Ray Rice or Pierre Thomas in the coming week and secure help for the future.

Injuries are also hitting the cornerback position. Brandon Carr is out with a broken hand. Morris Claiborne missed the first preseason game with a lingering knee issue. That forced Byron Jones into the starting spot and he was challenged early, but appeared to answer the call well enough to give Dallas confidence for the future. With at least one player likely to be released from the group, Claiborne did not help himself by missing the game. Orlando Scandrick and Jones handled things well enough that the Cowboys would be ok without him and his contract.

Get ready for us to be linked to every "noted" running back who might get cut or might available as trade bait. Sigh.

It's easy to speculate- Dallas COULD look to sign Rice or Thomas. They also COULD look to sign Troy Aikman... doesn't mean anything. Either of those players does make sense for Dallas, but it is odd such speculation comes out just as McFadden and Dunbar return to practice. Would have carried more liklihood before such event. I also don't think Arizona signing CJ has any bearing on what Dallas will do, outside of removing a name from availability so writers have less chance of missing with their 'rumor'/hopeful prediction... so they can say they said it first. There are no sources here. I, for one, think they probably should have had Thomas and/or Rice in by now for a look-see... but what do I know, I'm just a caveman.
