When you consider this whole farce started as a result of a false leak by the league, and all the public spent months getting riled up over something that was proven untrue, I'm willing to bet no apology with be forthcoming regarding anything to do with his phone...

The league's legality is completely irrelevant. The league commissioned a voluntary investigation where Brady voluntarily declined to surrender his cell. Even Brady probably understood his noncompliance would complicate instead of simplify the issue's resolution. That said, I have hoped Brady or the NFLPA would take the issue to court. In so doing, Brady would not not be required to surrender his cell for examination. Instead, his cell records would be subpoenaed and render his opposition completely ineffective.

I do agree that this does seem like another case of media sensationalism. It would not surprise me that the story has the customary quotable unnamed source or sources that are unverifiable.
