This could simply be the compromise to Jerry's issue here. He hates letting Romo go and Romo hates to leave but instead of trading him to someone Romo might not want to play with, Jerry allows him to pick and choose his destination.

If Dallas does this, does it allow Tony to begin being courted or does that have to wait until after 6/1?

This is interesting. I am a bit surprised.

I wasn't sold we were going to be able to trade romo for a 1st like Bradford but I thought we might get something.

Ugh, no compensation. I'd like at least one pick.

Also means we don't benefit from that cap room until June 1st. Most players long signed by then.

Poor decision if true.

Yes, but you need money to sign that big "All Pro" guard to a long term contract during training camp. This money will be used for him and
signing draft picks. No worries.

I think people are overestimating the return we will get in a trade, we might never know.

Would you feel different if they do this to free up cap space and go after a free agent or two this year?

Maybe but I find it hard to believe that some team wouldn't throw a 5th or 6th rounder at us.

I mean wouldn't taking a pick in the 5th be better than no pick at all?

I think this is solely a gift from Jerry to Romo to let Romo pick his destination.

No, it is to be expected. Just another example of cap mismanagement causing another missed opportunity.

Don't know if this qualifies as mismanagement, Tony was the franchise when they gave him that deal and there was no one contending for the crown because we had been so terrible about evaluating QB's.

It's a crappy situation and the only consolidation is that we at least have a guy to step in and aren't just cutting Romo because he couldn't perform.

I agree that it's terrible to get no draft value for Romo though, at this point, I'd even take a couple of third day picks.

Doesn't make us better and there is no literally no rush to sign him. He will be re-signed regardless of what happens with Romo.

Or could it be the franchise wants to spread the cost over two years as a June 1 and that's probably not an option if you trade him because you are likely going to have to trade him before FA and the draft hit?

Would the Browns trade for him? Heck, if we can get a 7th rounder for him (which I doubt), I'd hope the Cowboys would trade him to CLE.

I don't disagree with you on that mismanagement, Signing Hardy for a year didn't allow Dallas to eat a lot of Romo's contract that year....pushing money back on aging players hampers your team to do things in free agency when that player isn't worth keeping but there's many on here that will tell you back loading contracts year after year doesn't really hurt........BUT IT DOES!!
