I understand why Jerry would do it but it's a major mistake. You gotta treat this as a business decision take emotion out of it! You gotta do whatso best for the Cowboys and not what's best for Tony Romo.

Exactly my thinking too. If they simply release him this early, it's about emotion and not about logic. And would be strictly a Jerry the friend move and not a Jerry the GM move.

Any real GM who turned a starting Pro Bowl quarterback into absolutely nothing would be fired and never get another job.

If he did actually do it, which I don't believe he did......he's a bigger idiot than even I thought.

Maybe the market is a fifth round pick. Maybe the only interested teams are those Tony wouldn't want to play for and he'd just retire instead. If that's the case, releasing him might be the classy thing to do. If you want to be a destination for future free agents, sometimes you have to do more than win.

It's still a people business.

We need Houston and Denver to both show interest. That is about the only way to get any picks. We won't trade Tony to waste away somewhere even if it would help us. I think he would threaten retirement if it were to come up.

Yes, but billionaire owners can and often do exactly what they want to do.

I think people are overestimating the return we will get in a trade, we might never know.

Would you feel different if they do this to free up cap space and go after a free agent or two this year?

It doesn't free up very much space and we will need to use some of that space on a backup.

The worst part is this kind of reporting is only hurting our already unlikely possibility of getting a trade with another team.

It's just talk. Like everyone else is doing right now. Talk is cheap. And everyone has an opinion.

But wake me up when Ed Werder becomes a 'Cowboy Insider'.

Designating him a post-June 1 cut frees more than $10 million in cap space this year. That's not insignificant.

That cap space can't be used until after June 1. So while the number is significant, it's not much of a factor when FA and the better players start moving around.

Ok its a business, you don't let assets go for nothing in 'hope' that other assets hold you in high accord for doing that.

Sell google in hope that employees of bing hold you in high accord.

Its not true so it doesn't matter, but I hope Jerry ain't that stupid.

This is the one move you DONT make

Even IF you can't get ANYTHING in a trade(which is extremely hard to believe) you hold onto him as your backup. You're already on the hook for the majority of his cap hit this year so you may as well keep him as backup insurance.

What you don't do is waste $20 million in dead money this year to be a friend to him.

I agreed with this sentiment but someone (edit: multiple people) on the thread pointed out we could use that space to sign Zack Martin.

Therefore you could use restructuring room to sign FAs earlier.

I really don't buy this for a second. You don't release franchise QBs that can and still want to play. This sounds more like a leak from Romo's camp who certainly would rather him be cut than traded. I still say free up the cap space needed to keep him, let him and his agent shop around for a deal that is acceptable to both him and the Cowboys, and if he cant find one then be prepared to stay in Dallas or retire. Sorry Romo, but we have paid you a lot of money and got nothing the past two years. We aren't about the let you go and again get nothing in return. If you cant find a suitable team willing to give up market value, then you can be our insurance policy or retire. That is the stance I would take and its a very reasonable one. It gives Romo the chance to get what he wants but if its not out there, then he continues to honor the deal he signed and do whats best for the Cowboys. Romo's camp wants to recreate what Manning did but the Colts had just drafted a QB #1 overall and had to pay him lots of money. Dallas drafted the new QB in the 4th and had planned the cap around having Romo and Dak for several more years. Keep that plan in place for at least one more year if Romo has no trade value. Cutting Romo next year is much easier on the cap and gives us one more year of insurance at the QB spot.
