I still think he gets traded. There is not that much incentive cap wise to cut him. Romo might be pushing the issue by talking about retiring which would net us nothing.

Your being silly. Romo will and would never go to Cleveland or any other bottom rung team... Geez, get real.
Does he have a no trade clause? I don't think he gets to choose where he gets traded to.

Maybe but I find it hard to believe that some team wouldn't throw a 5th or 6th rounder at us.

I mean wouldn't taking a pick in the 5th be better than no pick at all?

I think this is solely a gift from Jerry to Romo to let Romo pick his destination.

Yeah I hear you and can't disagree. This is going to be one of those situations that is VERY difficult for it to work out well for us. Basically the only great outcome is if we trade him for a high(ish) pick, hit on a good starter with that pick, and Romo severely underperforms or is injured next year.

Anything else and those that criticize everything that this FO does will have at it, especially in hindsight. I think it's a difficult situation and the best outcome is that we move on from Romo and build around the young core.

This could simply be the compromise to Jerry's issue here. He hates letting Romo go and Romo hates to leave but instead of trading him to someone Romo might not want to play with, Jerry allows him to pick and choose his destination.

Why couldn't they trade Romo to a team that he was comfortable with?

Romo has the merit with JJOnes and the entire organization to be treated as he wishes.
He lost his position to no misdeed or lack of ability other then injury. It's unfortunate.
Good for JJones class act. Sometimes you help your friends.
We'll be fine.

Would the Browns trade for him? Heck, if we can get a 7th rounder for him (which I doubt), I'd hope the Cowboys would trade him to CLE.

We would likely get more a higher comp pick then that if we just release him.

Regardless, I expected this all along. We may field some calls to see what the market is but if no teams are calling that Romo wants to go to offering a 6th or better, we will likely just cut him and take the comp pick.

Or could it be the franchise wants to spread the cost over two years as a June 1 and that's probably not an option if you trade him because you are likely going to have to trade him before FA and the draft hit?

Not worth getting absolutely nothing in return. People always talk about creative accounting when it means pushing the bill down the road. You can be just as creative and take your lumps all at once rather than spreading out the pain too.

Who knows. Again I am curious as to why we couldn't get a team to just throw us 6th rounder for our troubles.

we get nothing if we cut him. Only unrestricted free agents get comp picks and Romo is under contract. He would hit the waiver wire and net us nothing.

If we release him you don't get a comp pick

Yes, he does...It's called retirement and T.V. deals. He's not going to play in Cleveland.
They have a legit left tackle and some good receivers. Heck even Hoyer managed to win 7 games with them. It could work. They're not Denver but have some legit players.

I understand why Jerry would do it but it's a major mistake. You gotta treat this as a business decision take emotion out of it! You gotta do whatso best for the Cowboys and not what's best for Tony Romo.

You really do look through "rose colored" glasses... Cleveland is a toilet bowl where NFL players go to die or get traded to another team.
Management sucks and so do the coaches.
