I'm a Texas fan, I know how overated mack Brown's recruiting was, as soon as Texas showed interest in juniors their stock shot up, Texas offered early, they excepted and ended up just being meh players. Mack wanted the easy signing, he was fat and lazy and still crying about Colt getting hurt. Those classes you named were junk. What would Herman's class be ranked without the 5 star dtackle that was going their anyway? Also those never hit top 40 classes at Louisville had a hell of a lot of NFL draft picks.
Like i said before, if Herman goes to Texas I hope he's all you say and more but questioning Stong's recruiting is ridiculous.
Agreed on Mack and recruiting tho the biggest issue was losing his top recruiters/assistants and never properly replacing them.
So they basically took guys from their 10th grade year performance at CAMPS. Ridiculous.
Strong is a good recruiter. But he is not a great recruiter (contrary to public opinion) and the distinction you seem to be missing is this is TEXAS, not Florida.
Strong has not recruited Texas prior to being named Coach. He did not have a tie to a great Texas recruiter.
Both Strong and Herman worked for Urban Meyer.
Meyer had Herman work Texas(and landed top players in this state), Strong work Florida.
HOU and LOU have been similarly impressive. HOU arguably moreso given the current climate of P5 vs the world.
And Herman did this at HOU with Texas recruits.
End of the day Texas recruiting ties is probably the primary need for UT. They have a huge built in advantage and the largest football budgets imaginable.
They should never finish outside the top 10 in recruiting.
And you are missing that even with a 7th place finish that class was pretty bunk. That was 28 total recruits which is a very high number and only reason it was top 10.
They have not recruited as well as TAMU with guys like Myles Garrett and others choosing the Aggies.
They've lost similar battles to OU.
Mack may have been fat and happy at the end but he didn't lose those recruiting battles.
Strong's 2017 class is ranked no where. He has like 7 guys signed....
His recruiting is insanely overrated.
He does a great job closing guys that final week but he's not doing enough the rest of the recruiting period.
Being UT gets to to the table with every major recruit in state. They should be dominant right now in recruiting. They aren't.
What Charlie Strong recruit at UT is going to be a high level NFL player? Much less where is this string of them he had at LOU?
Strong won big for 2 years at LOU both with a future NFL 1st round draft pick at QB.
Absent that what has he really done?
Was 14-12 his first two years at LOU and his UT record is even less impressive.
I fully expected Strong to really win at UT but he just never got the elite level classes or talent you'd expect.
The cratering Big 12 really can't afford UT to suck this bad.
