THIS IS TOTAL BS!!!!

First of all, Peppers is an UFA and he cannot be traded unless he is under contract. Even if Carolina uses the franchise tag, unless Peppers actually signs it, he still cannot be traded. Teams cannot trade the rights to a player, only contracts can be traded.

Secondly, Carolina is not going to use the franchise tag because that is over $20 mill guaranteed. Also, Peppers would not sign the franchise because he can get more than $20 mill in signing bonus in a long term contract if he is on the open market.

So to recap, unless Peppers signs a contract with Carolina he cannot be traded. Even if he is tagged, unless he actually signs the one year deal he still cannot be traded.

This "credible source from Philly" appears to not understand how the CBA works, that is why I am calling BS on this rumor.

I may be wrong, but if Carolina puts the franchise tag on him, he has no guarenteed money. It's all salary and no signing bonus. If they were to do it, it would've counted against the cap (which there isn't this year)

I also believe I heard on the NFL network that New England was interested in Peppers. Maybe Philly doesn't want to get into a bidding war with the Patriots.

from pretty credible source in philly....McNabb will be traded next week for Julius Peppers and 2nd round pick.

I cannot fathom a team wanting a QB on his way out. From a standpoint of getting to the Super Bowl, it would takes years. Years that McFlabb does not have.

This is pure horse schlitz.

Maybe it's just to give Moore another year or two to get ready.

I doubt McNabb will be traded. Andy loves him too much.

Franchise tags are 100% guaranteed money. If Peppers is tagged and he signs the one year deal, then every penny of that $20 million is guaranteed.

Think of a franchise tag as basically 100% signing bonus paid over 16 games instead of being all paid up front.

It's only guaranteed on week #1. That's why some teams will sign players in week #2 so they don't have pay as much.

Carolina could put the franchise tag him while they work out a trade.

This makes absolutely zero sense.

#1: Unless the Panthers resign Peppers they can't trade him.

#2: Why would the Panthers trade for McNabb, well into his 30's, when Matt Moore more than proved last season that he can do a fine job as the starting QB there?

This would be a very stupid deal for both sides.

I agree the deal doesnt make sense on paper ...unless Carolina does a sign and trade deal. And philly doesnt usually give long term deals to players Peppers age...but remember philly was humiliated by Dallas twice in span of week and the organization might be ready to depart on some issues.

The source is a person who has access to information within the organization and is not from sports radio or internet. Well find out soon enough but the one week period to wait would line up with Franchise Tag Deadline (date teams can start to trade) of 2/25/10.

Joey Galloway was traded to the Cowboys while franchised, so it is possible. Peppers just would have to agree to a contract with the eagles to finish the trade.

Wrong.

Franchise tags are guaranteed, 100%, the entire sum, period. All tags salaries are.

You've confused two different salary rules with that statement.

SALARIES are not guaranteed if a player is signed after week 2. They're fully guaranteed if a player is on the roster on week 1, which is why " some " teams wait to sign certain vets ( most likely special team players ) until after the 2nd week of the season.

Peppers isn't signed.

So how are they trading him?

I would normally call BS too, but this is Woods so special dispensation is given...

The deal makes sense for both sides, though the Panthers are getting the short end of the stick. McNabb is not a very good quarterback at this stage of his career, however he can be good in the right situation. That right situation would be an offense that runs first and needs a quarterback with some escape-ability and a big arm.

The Panthers are unloading a player that they wouldn't keep anyway (he's a free agent and even if they franchised him, it's only to trade him). The second round pick doesn't make much sense.

This also wreaks of desperation from a Panthers' coach who is probably on his way out and has Cowher breathing down his neck.

This trade makes both teams better - though I think the Panthers are overestimating the number of teams willing to bid for McNabb.

well, seeing that peppers in not under contract and UFA and FA hasn't begun...I am not sure how Panthers are able to pull this off. unless you and your source were drunk, playing madden and came up with this briliant idea.

Peppers doesn't become a free agent until March 5th, I believe.

Why does he have to be in the NFC? I mean if he gets traded to the panthers(?) that could possibly make them the best team in the NFL. Throw to smitty and have off to williams and stewart...
:laugh2:

Right. McNabb solves all their problems.

He'd still be good for few chokejobs, Smith could be just as ineffective as he was last year and the Panthers defense would be weakened significantly.

Pardon me if I am not frightened of the Panthers becoming a juggernaut just because of Donovan McNabb.

I am more bothered about the Eagles getting Peppers than the Panthers getting McNabb.
