ESPN NFC North blogger Pat Yasinskas is "hearing" the Bucs will hire Rod Marinelli as defensive coordinator.

Lovie Smith would be tabbing longtime pal Marinelli over Leslie Frazier, who could still be brought on in a position coach/"assistant head coach" role. The hangup with Marinelli was the fact that he coached Dallas' defensive line in 2013, and was still under contract with the Cowboys in 2014. Per NFL rules, position coaches must be formally released by their teams to accept anything below a head-coaching job. So Jerry Jones must have let Marinelli go.

It would shake things up here, and if that includes letting Kiffin go, I'm ok with this. It's not like our pass rush was a shining star this season, injuries or not. Rod is a great coach, but he can be replaced. Kiffin NEEDS to be replaced, and I'm not sure a change is made if Rod stays. This could be a catalyst.

If this is true, then there is absolutely, positively no reason to keep Kiffin.

I can only imagine the hilarity with a new DL coach who is not nearly as familiar with his defense to go along with the linebacker and secondary coaches who were not exposed to it either.

I don't have a problem just letting him go. He won't be effective if he does not want to be around.

But if we keep Kiffin without anyone he is familiar with on the staff, it is beyond idiotic, even for him.

100% true. There is no point to keeping Kiffen if this is true.

No reason at all.

Maranelli cannot leave unless Jones lets him leave. Maranelli will get promoted to DC this next season and be the DC for the Dallas Cowboys or no one. He signed a contract and has to honor it unless a team promotes him to a HC position.

And if he does not want to be here, why should Jones keep him? Why would he want to stay just to wait for Kiffin to finally leave?

I do not see any loyalty that Marinelli would have to Jason Garrett, especially in a lame duck season.

Yeah. So Jerry let him go. What's so hard to understand?

Under these circumstances with Rod I think Jerry lets him go. This may well be a situation Jerry was hoping for - face saver when he fires Kiffin.

Moreover how much sense would it make to keep someone that does not want to be around to be the defensive coordinator in waiting under a lame duck head coach?

Trestman wanted to keep him, but he wanted to go, so they let him as that was what was best for both parties.

Marinelli still has a home in Tampa as well I believe.

If true, this is a sad state of affiars. Dallas used to be the big room, now people are leaving after a year.
