what about assistant head coach?

No sir, NFL got rid of that loophole to stop the poaching of quality coaches. The only way Maranelli can leave is if Jerry Jones free him from his contract or he gets a HC opportunity. When Jason Garrett received the OC position in Dallas, Miami was nice enough to release him from his contract, but they did not have to.

If true, this is a sad state of affiars. Dallas used to be the big room, now people are leaving after a year.

That's a big shift that probably deserves it's own thread.

Dallas was THE place to be at one time and that time is ending, if it hasn't ended...

And if he does not want to be here, why should Jones keep him? Why would he want to stay just to wait for Kiffin to finally leave?

I do not see any loyalty that Marinelli would have to Jason Garrett, especially in a lame duck season.

There is a thing called a contract. No one twists your arm when you sign it. Maranelli is a former marine, so I am pretty sure he knows what its like to honor one's obligation. Maranelli will work to the best of his abilities even if Kiffin is fired.

Has it been verified that Jerry's letting him leave?

I read in a separate report not that long ago that sources were saying Rod actually likes it in Dallas. I was kind of expecting him to be our DC if/when Kiffin steps down.

Then what happened with his last contract with the Bears?

If Lovie wants him- he will tell Jerry he wants to go and Jerry will let him.

I like Rod, but I'm willing to clean the whole defensive coaching staff. Bring in a new D coordinator and let him bring in his own guys.

Oh, come on. You know that won't happen... JJ will bring in who he wants.

wait...WAIT WAIT WAIT.

Lovie Smith, as head coach, got to choose his staff himself?! Why didn't the owner pick it for him before he was even hired? ;)

Sidenote: I wonder if this seals Hatcher's departure. He had his most success under Rod's coaching.
