RUMOR: Ronde Barber for Greg Ellis

If the Cowboys trade Ellis for Barber, the Cowboys have a plan for Barber.

Some have speculated about Henry at FS. Getting Barber would allow that to happen. And that might actually help the team ....

T-New (CB), Barber (CB), Williams (SS), and Henry (FS) doesn't sound half bad to me.

As a fan, I like Ellis. But he isn't a 3-4 DE. Converting him to a part-time LB would be interesting, but given the depth at LB, it isn't like Ellis would be filling a huge need at LB. Ellis has some pass rushing ability and would be used in some of those situations, but Barber could give you more snaps ....

All things considered, it isn't such a crazy idea.

Just stop a minute and let it sink in: T-New (CB) Barber (CB) Williams (SS) Henry (FS)

Man, I like that idea! I think Henry would make a nice FS...!

That's the first thing I thought when I read this, one of the CBs will be moved to FS. I don't know a whole lot about Barber, size and tackling wise. How would he project as a FS?

is this the same guy that said Henson would be cut a few weeks back? cuz i see no validation, just links to other fan sites with no links

We might be tempted to do that but it would IMHO require a 2nd trade to get another pass rusher in here.

The NFL is such a trade light league it seems really doubtful but you never know.

I would really hate to part with Ellis until we know Carpenter can apply consistent pressure opposite Ware.

The thing is...I would want a player that wants to be here. Ellis is saying he will be here, but, won't like it. That's the part that bothers me...

I wonder if Henson can rush the passer?

Barber is listed at 5-10 and 184 lbs. He's about the same size as Aaron Glenn.

I gotta believe that Henry would be the one to move to FS (if this rumor pans out).

he sure can't beat it

I can't believe this trade would go through...

And it would be a huge mistake for us.

I hear ya there but as much maligned as Ellis is, he is by far our best pass rusher after Ware.

Ellis thinks he got screwed by Parcells. He signed here and gave us a home team discount to be a 4-3 end. Parcells ebnched him even though he tied for the team lead in sacks. Ellis is worried that the contract he signed becomes meaningless ebcause they will cut him next off-seaosn and leave him going after a free agent deal as an older part time player.

I can understand his frustration.

We should accomodate his trade desires or toss him a few bucks to shut him up.

In what way?

A disgruntled Ellis isn't going to do us much good. You act like he will just buckle his chinstrap and give it his all and everything is fine. He has already said he wouldn't give it his all and he is a player that has to do that to be effective.

I fail to see how trading for an All Pro cornerback for a disgruntled backup is anything short of a win.

I think this is an example of something that was just tossed out there and suddenly its talked about and now its all over. Henry to FS would be a good thing- he is big enough and would be an excellant FS. BUT why then would we let go the only other guy besides Ware that has SHOWN ability to get to the QB in the NFL? UNLESS BP is so sure that Capenter will be that guy, this is a big gamble. THE only thing that makes this halfway plausible is if Ellis has been making even more of a stink then we thought. BUT we have not heard anything more then the usual there; so maybe Ellis has gone into JJ and said "trade me now!!" The timing on this is very strange. Supposedly no one is around the ranch right now.

Again, just what you stated here, is what bothers me the most about Ellis...

I feel bad for Ellis also. But I just don't think he should be paid a higher salary or even given a severence. He's old and is not that great of a pass rusher.

Who knows, we might be able to find someone thats a better passrusher than him. He's not that great and doesn't warrant any "greatness" contract or a higher pay.

Him not wanting to play for the Cowboys anymore is a red flag that we should take into consideration. Why hamper the team over someone who's sour?

Coach Parcells hasn't "screwed him". If he had, then Ellis wouldn't have got his customary eight sacks in a defense he "didn't fit in". And now Coach Parcells has designs on using him as an up or down linebacker like McGinest. Instead of having faith, Ellis wants to moan and thinks he can get a huge contract from another team to play 4-3. Indirectly this is about money. And getting his own way.

Complete rubbish. He signed a fair contract. He isn't being paid the veteran minimum. He is compensated very well. And honestly, it's his own fault if he signed the contract. Just like it is anyone's responsibility when the pick up the pen and sign. To imply it was to "be a 4-3 end" is ridiculous. I can guarantee there isn't a word in that entire document that states anything close to that. He signed to play football and rush the passer, that's it. And that wouldn't change no matter what the scheme was.

Ellis is worried that the contract he signed becomes meaningless ebcause they will cut him next off-seaosn and leave him going after a free agent deal as an older part time player.

We could cut him now. Or next year. Or two years from now. He wants a guarantee or incentive that no player in the NFL has. What makes him worthy of an exception?

I can understand his frustration.

I understand it also. I just don't care as he is getting a fair salary and an opportunity to prolong his career. He would rather have a big payday elsewhere. I'd let him get it.

We should accomodate his trade desires or toss him a few bucks to shut him up.

If you do that, then you open up the entire team to revolt. Every drama queen with a cause could demand more money. No smart NFL GM or owner would do anything close like what you suggest, thankfully for us.

You make a great deal of sense.

However this defense without Ellis suddenly becomes a very poor pass rushing defense and one that that could keep this team from advancing very far in 2006.

Something's going to have to be done about Ellis though. I don't necessarily want to trade for Barber, but the point that someone made about the boys moving Henry to FS would not be all that bad.

Plus, do you really want Ellis on the team if he's extremely unhappy? Not saying he's going to dog it!

Why in the world would the Bucs do this? Barber is considered by some to be the best CB in the league.. At the very least, he is considered Top 5.. CB is a premium position.. Ellis is an above average DE, also a premium position.. I dont see why a team would trade an "elite" player for an above average one..

all that said, I would love this trade.. Henry is a great CB.. but when he played FS his first year in the league, he was incredible.. 10 interceptions as a rookie? you kidding me? we would have, no doubt at all, the best secondary in football.. Newman, Barber, Henry, Roy.. then when we go to the nickel defense, Newman, Barber, Glenn, Henry, Roy.. man, I just about pee peed my pants just typing that..

I like Ellis a lot.. a whole lot.. but I would do this trade in a millisecond..

Yeah, it is just a rumor. No way to know if it is true or not. But it sounds plausible.

That the Cowboys and Bucs have been trading partners in the past adds some credibility to the rumor, IMO.

I don't know enough about the Bucs to know if the trade would make sense in the context of their roster. (Do they have a CB who is ready to step up? Teams like to rotate DLs - What kind of depth do they have at DE?)

Assuming that the Bucs don't want to redo an expensive long-term deal with Barber, the Bucs' choice may be get some value for Barber now or keep him for (an unhappy) a year and then get nothing for him.

and another thing.. if this did happen, it would make our best player, Roy Williams, even better.. we would FINALLY have a ballhawking FS that would allow Roy to blitz like crazy and spend most of his time in the box.. for those worried about losing Ellis the pass rusher, say hello to an even better pass rusher (yeah, I said it).. Roy Williams..
