I think Hatcher will suprise people this year; and Canty will get some scalps as well; Stanley too. Thats what I mean about it being spread out; if each of them get 2-3 then you don't miss either Ellis or Glover.

The problem with all that is "IF".

You put Ellis out there and you'll get your 8 sacks. You can pretty much set your watch by it.

We are playing the 3-4 now. It is stupid for us to rely on a DE to be our second best pass rusher.

Actually our use of the "nickel" or other defenses that utilized a 4-man line was very high last yeasr and I would expect that to continue thus the necessity for another pass rusher other than Ware.

But when has Ellis ever had a BIG sack? When it really mattered? When the game was on the line? 8 sacks are nice, but that is all.

Ware, Ferguson, Canty, Spears.. that will be our nickel defensive line.. and I think that looks REALLY good.. especially when you consider that our nickel secondary looks like this: Newman, Barber, Glenn, Henry, Roy..

check.. check..

is this thing on?
Yup, with an outstanding FS AND an OLB who has some ability in coverage, Roy Williams could blitz more often. He's pretty good at it too.

When I saw the headline for this thread I simply thought "just another dead end off-season topic".
But after looking at TB's depth chart maybe there is some fire feeding the smoke.
TB isn't likely to re-sign a 32 year old Barber after next season. Their depth chart says Greg Spires is the starter opposite Rice. I can't see anyone else on their roster, besides Rice, who impresses me as a DE.
Someone said TB isn't dumb enough to trade Barber for Ellis. But given the circumstances maybe trading Barber for Ellis is the smart thing for them to do.
They can get a few more years out of Ellis as a strong side DE in a system he has been very solid in. Moreso than anyone else currently on their roster. They are likely only going to get another year from Barber.

It might "look good" but it has vitually no pass rush capability outside of Ware.

Ellis is a good guy and a good player, but having him gone will really not mean that much in the long run, or even the short run. If we can get a good pick or a good player that will help somewhere else on the team, then do it.

I disagree.. I do think that Spears has potential to be a good pass rusher.. not a great one, but a good one.. and with all that talent in the secondary, you can have some fun with Roy blitzing from the nickel formation.. and there is this guy named Hatcher.. is he gonna be raw? yes.. but a pass rushing DE specialist has gotta be the easiest position in football to learn and grasp as a rookie.. he just goes after the QB.. and he has the physical tools to do it..

I'd be more optimistic going into this season if he was gone. It's not that I dislike him. It's not that I think he doesn't produce. I just think negative karma is the last thing we need right now and he's brought nothing but lately.

I'd take Rhonde Barber over him any day and trust the D to find his 8 sacks between improvement at SOLB with Carpenter, improvement at DE with Spears & Canty entering 2nd years, plus using Hatcher as a pass rush specialist with Ware also improving. Plus Barber would allow us to blitz Roy even more and that is a good thing for this team. He creates havoc.

If this trade has any wings at all I'd do it in a heartbeat. If...

Hey people I think that with the best secondary in football we won't have to worry about a thing. Our passrush will be dominant. Which will make our elite secondary look even better.

Look at our Dime Defense

Anthony Henry
Terrance Newman
Ronde Barber
Aaron Glenn
Roy Williams
Marcus Coleman

NICE SECONDARY

2nd team Dime

Ronde Barber
Aaron Glenn
Jacques Reeves
Marcus Coleman
Keith Davis
Pat Watkins

3rd Team

Aaron Glenn
Ronde Barber
Marcus Coleman
Jacques Reeves
Justin B.
Anthony Henry

I remember Buffalo giving us their 1st and if McGahee wouldn't have starting running and Bledsoe gone on a tear the last 6 games, that pick would've been a top 10.
That is true. But we had to trade a first round pick to get that first round pick back. No one is going to give us a first round pick for Ellis. Even if someone gave us a third round pick (possible but I think unlikely), add that with our own first round pick probably still wouldn't get us into the top 10.

Greg Ellis makes too much money to be a backup.
Actually his salary is pretty salary cap friendly. For general discussion however, I agree with you.

IMO, Ronde Barber is one of, if not the best pure coverage corner in the NFL. He excells in both man and zone coverages (is easily the best zone corner in football). I would do this in a heartbeat. Ellis is just out of place in our rotation.

but think about it, alot of corners are made in Tampa's zone-cover scheme, that usually hides deficiencies such as speed, Donnie Abraham anyone? not saying Barber is a bad corner in a man-coverage system, just that there's a concern there, and trading away one of our top-2 pass-rushers for him, might not be the smartest idea, when considering that we're already 3, maybe even 4, deep at CB, and not that relatively stocked in pass-rushers
