RUMOR: Ronde Barber for Greg Ellis

The boys have not had a real pass rush since the middle 90's. While I would love to have 60 sacks, that ain't gonna happen. Ware came within a whisker of several more sacks, and he was not alone. Pressures can do as much as a sack does, if it makes the QB throw early or check off. Given the added strength and experience of our young players, plus carpenter, I really see us increasing our sack count even without Glover and Ellis this year.
By the way- we do not need great play from our NT; just good, which is what we got from Ferguson last year anyway. I really do not see that playing Stanley or Johnson, or maybe Taurlea will be all that much of a drop off, if any.

Oh thanks David! LOL!

I seen your name here and I thought, "OK, David is going to lend some support to Greg Ellis..."

And what happens? I see a post deriding poor Zimmer instead.

IMO, Ronde Barber is one of, if not the best pure coverage corner in the NFL. He excells in both man and zone coverages (is easily the best zone corner in football). I would do this in a heartbeat. Ellis is just out of place in our rotation.

Wow...if this did happen, Jon Gruden would be a FOOL. I agree with you -- Rhonde is the best all-around corner in football. Not only that, but he's a quality character. I would be SHOCKED if Tampa traded him, especially for someone like Greg Ellis. I'm NOT saying Ellis isn't good, but he's not comparable to Rhonde, IMO.

If this happened, the Cowboys would instantly have the best defense in the NFC on paper. And if Ware comes around this year, and Canty can stay healthy so that they put pressure on the passer, wow. I would definitely fear the Cowboys a bit more.

That being said, I highly doubt that this trade goes down.

Why in the world would the Bucs do this? Barber is considered by some to be the best CB in the league.. At the very least, he is considered Top 5.. CB is a premium position.. Ellis is an above average DE, also a premium position.. I dont see why a team would trade an "elite" player for an above average one..

all that said, I would love this trade.. Henry is a great CB.. but when he played FS his first year in the league, he was incredible.. 10 interceptions as a rookie? you kidding me? we would have, no doubt at all, the best secondary in football.. Newman, Barber, Henry, Roy.. then when we go to the nickel defense, Newman, Barber, Glenn, Henry, Roy.. man, I just about pee peed my pants just typing that..

I like Ellis a lot.. a whole lot.. but I would do this trade in a millisecond..

You have to be careful here. CBs in a CoverII scheme look much better then they actually are many times. In a TB CoverII, the keys are the Safeties, not the CBs. I have long felt as if Ellis needed to be moved. All on this board know that. I would be in favor of a trade but I agree, we would need to get another DL to help us out. I am really not all that affraid of losing the pass rush. Between our LBs development, Carpenter and the young DLs we have now, I think we can be OK there. I would however like to pick up another young DT to help Ferguson out. Tampa Bay has a lot of talent at DT. They have Hovan, Bradley, Anthoney Bryant, Bugger and Ellis Wyms. They drafted Jenkins and Bennett as well. They got a lot of guys on there DL rotation. They are not going to be able to keep them all.

I agree. But Barber has talent. It's not like plugging in Mario Edwards in the Cover Two and making him look serviceable. I think he does have talent and would be worth it. I do know we would run less man coverage with him on board and that's where I have reservation. I like aggressive corners who can muscle receivers, disrupt their timing etc.

As for Tampa, they should want Ellis. He would be a veteran who could help the players like Dewayne White achieve his potential. I do think he is an upgrade over Greg Spires for them. Rice and Ellis would make a nice mixture.

I agree I think it is a good trade for both teams. Problem is Tampa is prolly wanting something more than straight up for Barber. Dallas won't do that.

Ellis 8 sacks... can be replaced BARBER alone could get half of them!!! I'm not sure how many sacks BARBER has but he has more than 20!!! He is a better slot CORNER than NEWMAN... he can get to the QB!!! with what the Cowboys did with NEWMAN the first half of the season BARBER could get at least half of ELLIS sack total and not blink an eye!!!

I don't agree on the Barber > Newman.

Newman is the best corner in football in my opinion. He seriously reminds me of Deion but more complete.

Oh, I agree. Barber would be an upgrade for us. My point is that while many believe it would be a stupid move, in TBs scheme, losing a CB is not nearly as important as it might be in a scheme like ours. If they do not believe they can resign him and they have an opportunity to pick up another quality pass rusher, which I believe Ellis is in a 43, then that's much more of a value to them then Barber IMO. Everything works off there ability to get pressure in TB. There DBs would get eaten up if they didn't have a front 4 that could get it done up front. Wouldn't matter who they had back there. They get Ellis and that helps them in the most important area of defense they have. Also helps them in what there weakest at. Stopping the power rushing attack. It would be a good move for them as well, IMO.

I would not say this. Newman is very good but he is no Deion.

I still think we get the better of the deal because we trade a potential backup for a potential starter. But of course we know the deal couldn't be straight up player for player. When you start throwing other things in there like draft choices, that changes things.

If Ellis is traded to Tampa he will get double digit sacks.

I'd really like to hear the explanation for this one.
