The Steelers have dropped 1st on Fautano and Iheanchor since the Jones pick so dumping him for a 3rd was stealing!

You said tackle picks were made in '24 and '26.

Jones was drafted in 22 so the current coaching staff has nothing tieing them to the player. The team has since dropped 1st round picks on tackles in 24 and again in 26.
Getting a 3rd for him is like winning the lottery at this stage!

Not when they have to give back a 4th.

• SCOUTING REPORT: WEAKNESSES​

  • Has the traits to improve, but Jones gets impatient in his set, lunging and reaching, and generally playing with poor balance at times. Jones is inconsistent with his kick slide.
  • Needs to work on his technique in pass protection, using more consistent leverage and continuing to move his feet.
  • As an outside chance to stick at left tackle, but he might actually fit better on the right side or kicking in to a guard spot.
  • Stops his feet after initial contact, relying on length but allowing the defender to get the corner or spin inside.
  • Only 22 starts in his entire college career
  • Does not protect his chest and core, leading to inefficient balance
  • Leans and bends at the waist, causing balance issues
  • Technique is not as polished - looks raw
  • Gets overaggressive at times
  • Struggles to maintain leverage through and across reps - lacks some drive as a run blocker - much better in pass protection
  • Too tall off the snap making enabling the defender to win the leverage battle
  • Needs to bend his knees more - too upright at contact

  SCOUTING REPORT: SUMMARY​

  Broderick Jones is probably the best athlete in the entire offensive line class, he's very strong, has elite core strength, cat-like quickness, and has the speed of a tight end. His upside is huge as a pass blocker, however, he isn't nearly as good as a run blocker where he has struggled a little. This is most likely due to the fact that he hasn't played as much as you would like and as a result looks a little raw technically.
  
  Overall Jones is a top-level prospect with serious potential to be a dominant pro player - he'll be a first-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Same story we hear but from the Steelers side, I think he just needs some time. The surgery was week 12 of last year and he is down weight and it doesn't seem he ever got into football shape. He is never going to be a good starter, but he might be "startable" and certainly might be a good swing tackle. Just not sure he will be any of that week 1 or even this year.

Jones suffered a brutal neck injury during Week 12 of the 2025 season against the Chicago Bears. The injury required Jones to receive spinal fusion surgery. After little to no updates on the injury through the offseason, Jones was surprisingly activated from the PUP list just one day before training camp began.

Jones’ availability seemed to come as a shock to everyone, including the Steelers.

Just last week, Jones expressed frustration with all of the moving around he has done during the summer. Jones was playing about 15 pounds underweight throughout training camp. A fresh start for Jones seemed to be in the best interest of both sides.

I'm not worried about what people think of him all I know is I guarantee this and I'm not over there but I don't need to be over there to understand this team and how teams operate Adams Schottenheimer and Will Mcclay saw a need just like we did at tackle they went to Jerry and they had a list and they consulted and said we can work with this guy Adams and Riley or whatever the other guys name is for the offensive line they're the ones who know about these players and whether they can work with them or not it doesn't matter what fans and media think it's the worst thing to do is like well we saw what he did over there yeah the same team the Pittsburgh Steelers who gave up on George Pickens it happens all the time draft picks get in a low and they're not very good and the team gets rid of them and they go somewhere else and they actually can sometimes reignite their career...

Good bad or indifferent i'm gonna trust the coaching staff thinks they have something to work with and they're gonna try to do it this guy is gonna be the swing tackle to start the season and maybe a change of zip codes getting on a different team is gonna help him out where he's not pressured he could be the swing tackle and work his way in..

I agree with this. Your point is well made. I am hoping for the best.

On the other hand they also brought in Kenneth Murray last offseason and they kept Steele and that hasn’t gone so well. I think that’s why you see all the chagrin posted here regarding this move.

I’m going to hope for the best. We may not need him immediately. Maybe he can continue to heal up and get coached up by the Cowboys in the interim. It’s a low risk move. And the cap hit will likely be somewhat low because he is on his rookie deal.

I agree with all that. I just don’t get why it got to where a Friday draft pick was ever on the discussion for this guy.

How many other teams were beating the Pittsburgh doors down to deal for this guy?

I know they got a fourth back, and we are going to find out. If the swing problem is solved, it was well worth the cost. I’m just concerned about the surgery and his ability to step in at a moments notice and not get Dak killed.

Why would you move an all pro caliber guard out to be an average tackle unless you have to?
Why would you move a left tackle whose biggest issue has been physicality out to right tackle where the physicality will be exponentially higher?

LT is the most important position on the OL. Period.

Smith would not be “average.” You are pulling that idea out of your butt. No one knows how good he will be. But he was drafted to play that position to begin with, or at least that was a possibility.

Guyton will likely be an upgrade over Steele in pass blocking. He played the position in college and has the athleticism to succeed. He may not be a mauler, but he won’t be a liability like Steele either.

Finally, it is easier to replace a LG than a LT. There will be a dropoff from Smith to Bass, but the stability at LT alone will make it worth it in terms of overall OL efficiency.

Moving Smith is not “ideal”. But it is clear none of the FO plans regarding OT development have materialized. How many games are you willing to sacrifice this season in order to come to this realization:

Smith is our best OT and we need him to stabilize the most important position on the OL

Guyton only played RT because Oklahoma switched him there because they had a need and a left handed QB.

It doesn’t matter why they moved him there. He has the muscle memory and experience on that side.

He has struggled at LT. Why not see if he succeeds more at his natural position rather than counting on him to develop at LT where he clearly hasn’t?

This is another move w/ Jerry in charge that is highly questionable.

We better be right. We really couldn't afford to give up a 3rd.

If I understand the compensation we gave up we switched the 3rd and 4th round picks and then also gave up a 6th round pick. I looked at an old trade value chart and based on the Cowboy finishing with around a top 10 record and the Steelers finishing with around a bottom ten record (about 20 picks difference) that’s about a 6th round pick value.

Obviously if we finish better than that or if the Steelers are worse than that the difference is less. The inverse is also true.

The difference could be as low as one draft slot or as high as about 63 draft slots. The latter is highly unlikely as the Cowboys would have to finish dead last and the Steelers would have to win the SB.

Smith was a holding nightmare in college at LT. Guyton possesses skills that Smith does not have, and has been looking very good this preseason.

Smith has come a long way. He is clearly our best option at LT. He doesn’t want to do it and the team doesn’t want to admit that Guyton was a mistake yet.

They are hoping he turns a corner, and Steele’s abysmal regression has made a problem a three alarm fire.

Hence the panic move to trade for another OT that has sucked and praying he miraculously fixes the issues lol
