What team has such incredible offensive tackle depth that they would be willing to trade away one that you know for sure can help?

Jones was the best the Cowboys could have done. Nobody is giving away a Penei Sewell.

  • SCOUTING REPORT: WEAKNESSES​

    • Has the traits to improve, but Jones gets impatient in his set, lunging and reaching, and generally playing with poor balance at times. Jones is inconsistent with his kick slide.
    • Needs to work on his technique in pass protection, using more consistent leverage and continuing to move his feet.
    • As an outside chance to stick at left tackle, but he might actually fit better on the right side or kicking in to a guard spot.
    • Stops his feet after initial contact, relying on length but allowing the defender to get the corner or spin inside.
    • Only 22 starts in his entire college career
    • Does not protect his chest and core, leading to inefficient balance
    • Leans and bends at the waist, causing balance issues
    • Technique is not as polished - looks raw
    • Gets overaggressive at times
    • Struggles to maintain leverage through and across reps - lacks some drive as a run blocker - much better in pass protection
    • Too tall off the snap making enabling the defender to win the leverage battle
    • Needs to bend his knees more - too upright at contact

    Broderick Jones is probably the best athlete in the entire offensive line class, he's very strong, has elite core strength, cat-like quickness, and has the speed of a tight end. His upside is huge as a pass blocker, however, he isn't nearly as good as a run blocker where he has struggled a little. This is most likely due to the fact that he hasn't played as much as you would like and as a result looks a little raw technically.

    Overall Jones is a top-level prospect with serious potential to be a dominant pro player - he'll be a first-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.

I appreciate you posting this information, I really do. It is helpful. But it is not as relevant as his history in the NFL. He has 3 years in the NFL now and his performance as an NFL player is far more important at this point than what an analyst thought were his characteristics in college.

I am not knocking the Cowboys for making the move. They need to fix the OT problem they have. I am unhappy with the price they paid, considering he had a severe neck injury and has not lived up to expectations since he was drafted.

We also don't know if there are any other moves they attempted to make before getting this deal done. Maybe this is the best player available. I just don't have any expectations that he would be a great addition to the team this year.

A trade that could involve a swap of as few as 10-20 places, and one 6th when we had two anyway, isn’t exactly high stakes gambling.

It’s a mistake to simply diminish the value of the third round pick to “15-20” spaces

It could be the difference between taking a legit starter or not. The value dips after the third round.

The 6th is far from a “throwaway” asset as well. Particularly when the 2027 is viewed as a talent rich pool.

Suddenly we only have 4 picks in what will likely be one of the best drafts in years? And for what? What amounts to a flyer on a failed first round pick who was likely getting cut anyway.

Just a dumb move that reeks of desperation

It's not a linear format mate. So we're now a fanbase that's crying over trading 6th Rd picks. "Reeks of Desperation", yea probably, but thank Steele and Thomas for that. We gave them a chance and we needed improvement.

They do if they were injured, and they got another player in the first round to replace him, you don’t want two first round salaries

We’ll have to access, any tackles that are released, in the next week or so, against what we have, it’s like a draft pick, you don’t know what you have until you have it

You were the one who (pretty correctly) called it a ‘question mark’. Now all of a sudden it’s a ‘desperate’ move…

Clearly you weren’t being so reasonable after all.

Drawing any conclusion about the guy right now is hasty.

They obviously saw enough in him to offer what is — no matter what you say — relatively low compensation.

You can talk about talent dropping off after the third, but the list of exceptions is glaring. Also, we’re never done hearing about how apparently deep next year’s draft is going to be. A fourth rounder next year could be like a standard third rounder.

These are all hypotheticals at the minute. People need to stop overreacting to this trade.

Imho, I’m happy to trust this coaching staff if they think Jones is worth a shot. The rest of their decision making this off-season has earned that trust.
