Heath was better than Wilcox . He took his job . Wilcox was the worse player in nfl . Heath was 2nd worse .

Wilcox had a rough year but I have a lot of cautious optimism for him this year. He missed a decent amount of training camp last year with his Mom dying and you know that had to have a large effect on his ability to focus on the year. There was also the injury partway through the year where Heath took his spot. This in addition to already being very raw.

He has the athletic ability and it was believed he had some instincts to go a long with. I think with a full offseason/training camp he could be a player this coming year. He won me over after hearing his phone call with Jerry and co last draft and I'd really like to see him succeed.

However, if he doesn't show any real improvement this year I'd like to see a change in philosophy concerning safeties in the draft next year similar to what has happened with the offensive line.

Wilcox and Johnson need to step up. Johnson needs to actually step on the field as well.

I love the player but we didn't have the green to play that game. So end of that story.

I think we could have found a way to make the money work if he was the #1 target. I don't think the front office is lying when they say they are okay with what we have. We'll probably be talking safety again next offseason, just like we have for countless offseasons past.

I agree with the last sentence for sure. But I don't think they wanted to continue with pushing cap down the road; at least as much as they have. I think the DBs will look better with a bit more pressure and esp good play by the LBers. The more I think about it the more I think the LBers contributed to the poor play by the entire unit. It was an all around failure but I think the LBers deserve more discredit than they have gotten.

Dixon didn't have the test scores or grades to make it into a state D1 school. Baylor claimed he was learning disabled and got him in. No doubt he's an athlete. But there is a reason he almost went undrafted with all those skills. He's right on the verge of being unable to learn. Curious to see what his wonderlic score was. I wouldn't get too excited.

Source please.

Lots of possible reasons for that. Having a learning disability is one of them, being bored is another, having a bad home life is another still. I'm not saying for sure it was any of those, but I wouldn't place any real weight on high school grades as a guy who graduated in the bottom 25% of my high school class and the top 10% of my college class.

He mentioned in the interview how the teachers were no help. Telling him he wouldn't amount to anything. Depending on the district in which he attended school, they have a history of doing things like that. It's like that "pipeline" thing that's talked about. I'm so glad he kept fighting. And I will be rooting for him with everything I've got. I'm sure Dez, Terrence, Tyrone Crawford, Red J, and Jerry Jones also want him to succeed.

Wilcox was going to be named the starter at Safety last August coming off of the Raiders game, but lost his mom and was out for ten days. From what I understand he took the loss very hard and it took him some time to get back into the swing of things.

The combine can be a curse...look at a players game film...can he play or not...

True for many D1 players. When you get to D2 & D3 the film isn't nearly as definitive. Just because a D2 guy tore it up against D2 competition doesn't mean he'd be a good D1 player much less worth of a NFL draft selection.

Even with D1, you have to look at the competition. That's actually one of the concerns voiced about many of the Boise State selections the last couple of years -- their level of competition isn't anything like the bigger D1 conferences -- they play the likes of Air Force, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado State, and Wyoming on an annual basis.

That's not to say good players don't come from small conferences and lesser known schools (there are plenty in the HOF) -- it just means the film doesn't mean as much with these kinds of players.

i agree. i think he will play that "mccray role" this year.

If he can simply fill that headhunter role on special teams, that would be excellent. I honestly think he has the capacity to be a good reserve behind Church.

We should have done whatever it took to sign Jarius Byrd.
TJ Ward went 4/22 @ a reasonable contract to DEN (who I wanted) but the team never contacted him. Byrd got 9+ a year and I'm a big proponent of adding talent to the S position, but that is a bit much for anyone not named Earl Thomas or Ed Reed in his prime. Dixon does look like he has the athleticism and can tackle (unlike Heath) so it is encouraging that we will likely not see him in the secondary again if injury to Wilcox or Church were to occur. This team still needs to look @ replacing Church who isn't athletic enough to keep up with the more athletic TEs and backs out of the backfield.

I agree in part. I like Church but I'd like someone a bit faster with better coverage skills who can also tackle as well as Church. I also like Heath although I have no idea how he'll turn out or even if he makes the team this year. I will say he can tackle and he runs very well. He just was far in over his head it's not funny. I'm pulling for him. He's faster than Wilcox and bigger. I want to develop the guy. He just may get caught up in the numbers. It'll be interesting to see if anyone likes him enough to take him off the PS IF that is where he lands.

Solid post....the kid the Bears took in the first round (Fuller) can play corner or safety....those guys are rare and you almost need a big CB to convert into a safety....just not many of those guys coming out of college right now. Then you run into a team like the Niners in week one that pound the heck out of the rock and run a completely different O'. Not looking forward to playing them right out of the gate. Won't be pretty.

Not sold on this guy, in fact I think he and the Fresh Prince are the most likely of the draftees to not make the team.

Guy seems to either not read plays or just doesn't trust his eyes enough to be a good SS in the league.

There have been a lot of really good football players that were probably terrible in the classroom. Just look at Terry Bradshaw...as Hollywood Henderson said...he couldn't spell cat if you spotted him the C and the A.
