It can't be the greatest country song, because he hadn't said anything at all about mama or trains, or trucks, or prison, or getting drunk.

I just assumed blinking was an euphemism for getting drunk in prison and thinking about mama as a train engineer, being drunk too, and plowing through a stalled truck on the tracks.

I hated it when it came out and if you read the lyrics, it's even worse. Sounds like it was written by some idiot that got rejected from Hallmark Cards.

I guess I always heard it as the loneliness, long forgotten dreams and the feeling that "nothing short of dying" is worse than that lonesome walk down that quiet street while life happens around you. Alcohol was the cure for that sadness but there is no escaping it come Sunday morning.

If you've not seen it look up the version on YT by a San Francisco busker, Jesse Morris. Recorded in a subway station so the quality is poor but it's the most heartfelt version I have heard. He committed suicide not long after.
