LANDOVER, Md. – Cowboys tailback DeMarco Murray feared he would finish the game on the sideline after he lost a whopping 9 yards on third-and-goal from the 1 late in Sunday’s must-win game with the Commanders.
“Oh, yeah, I wanted to stay on the field,” Murray said. “I was fortunate they kept me out there.”
So was Dallas. After scrambling away from pressure, Tony Romo hit Murray for a 10-yard touchdown pass with 1:08 left that handed the Cowboys a 24-23, propelling them into next week’s de facto NFC East title game with Philadelphia.
“I knew where I was on the field,” Murray said. “I just knew I had to get another yard or so and try to get the ball in there.
It was a great decision by Romo and a great job by the offensive line giving him time to throw and make a good decision.”
Before the play, Murray looked to be the goat after attempting to change direction on a play designed to go around left end. Linebacker Perry Riley Jr. dragged him down at the 10, putting the Cowboys in a terrible spot with their season on the line.
“My first thought was to just try to make a play,” he said. “But after looking at it, I actually should have just ate it. As a competitor, you’re always trying to make a play. You just got to move on.”
Murray finished with 96 yards and a TD on 22 carries to become the first Dallas back to gain 1,000 yards for the season since Julius Jones did it in 2006. In his 13 games, Murray has 1,073 yards on 200 carries.
Murray’s rushing TD – a 3-yarder early in the first quarter –
was his ninth of the season, the most by a Cowboy since Marion Barber had 10 in 2007.
“I tell him all the time I love his mentality,” Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant said of Murray’s hard-nosed running style. “It sparks me and everybody else.”
One week after he logged just seven carries in the second half of the Cowboys’ 37-36 loss to Green Bay despite Dallas holding a 26-3 lead at halftime, Murray said he was happy with his workload.
The Cowboys are 11-0 when he logs 20-plus carries.
“I thought (offensive coordinator) Bill (Callahan) did a great job of calling the plays,” Murray said.
