Saints nearing 2007 Patriots territory
Monday, November 2, 2009 | Print Entry

Adam Schefter answers readers' questions nearly every day in his blog. Monday, he's turning his attention to the MNF matchup between the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints. Have a query of your own? Submit it right here.

Q: Do you think this year's Saints could be put on the same level as the 2007 Patriots, at least from the standpoint of sheer offensive dominance? Is it crazy to think they could run the table?
--Eric (Shreveport, La.)

A: As crazy as it sounds, Eric, it's not out of the question. So far, the Saints have scored an average of 39.7 points per game, which put them on pace to score an NFL single-season record 635 points, considerably more than the 589 that the Patriots scored in 2007. The other outstanding single-season marks are the 556 points the Vikings scored in 1998 and the 541 the Commanders scored in 1983. It'll be real tough for New Orleans to maintain that pace all season, but the Saints' offense is good, its schedule is soft and it cannot be dismissed, not with a quarterback as good as Drew Brees.
Not counting tonight's game. New Orleans has given up 127 points in 6 games.

That is a pace for 338 on the season.

New England only gave up 274.

I don't see it and I like the Saints better.

Just for fun:

2007 Patriots through 6 games:
Points For - 230
Points Against - 92
Point Differential - 138

2009 Saints through 6 games:
Points For - 238
Points Against - 127
Point Differential - 111

Not all that different. The 2009 Saints are certainly in their neighborhood and that scares the poo-poo outta me.

this

they have alot of weapons

Of course, the age of the Pats defense caused them to decline throughout the year. This Saints defense may actually get better as the year goes on.

was tom brady completely worthless that game?
I dont see how that makes them better at all. Brady playing at the level he was is what made them better.

The Pats led by double digits at halftime thru 6 of 8 games and were up by double digits entering the 4th quarter in every game except against us. A 4th quarter that they killed us in.

And so it's understood, Brady was struggling. He wasnt terrible, but he had 1 TD and 2 picks and the offense hardly moved the ball.
