I'm rooting for the Saints and all the x-Cowboy coaches and players who weren't good enough.

As Billy Shakesphere once said, "What's in a name?" The "America's Team" moniker has been applied to the Saints because the media loves the storyline of a team of lovable losers rising from the wreckage of Katrina. Once the 2007 season is in full swing, the name will once again be applied to the Cowboys.

I sometimes get on a soapbox and go off on a rant. The thread below is one of my best ever. It addresses this aspect of your post.

http://cowboyszone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75077

I also mentioned earlier in this thread that this is the only sports franchise nickname that anyone ever wants. Think about it. No other nickname out there is considered offensive to anyone else, and no other team nickname out there is attempted to be stolen or "borrowed." ;)

Examples...

Purple People Eaters
Orange Cruch
Dirty Birds
Steel Curtain
Monsters of the Midway
Fearsome Foursome
Doomsday
Grits Blitz
Who Dat
Who Dey

America's Team is the only one anyone ever tries to steal or make their own. Personally, that makes me love it even more.

Right, and Green Bay calls itself Titletown, so it's relative. I think the "America's Team" came about because of Tom Landry and the fact that he stressed the pursuit of excellence with character. Add to that the fact that he became a HOF head coach on those ideals.

No one is offended by "Titletown." That's my point. People get seriously chapped about "America's Team."

The nickname was bestowed upon Dallas by Bob Ryan of NFL Films in 1979 when he was making the documentary of their season. He observed that everywhere he went he met Dallas Cowboys fans and saw them wearing the team merchandise.

The nickname stuck.

No one else can have it. Not even for a weekend cruise. It's ours and it always will be.

Thank you.

Also he noticed that every "away" stadium that Dallas played in had lots of Cowboy fans.

Glad to see someone finally put the truth out there.

the truth has been put out here many times about the America's Team moniker, but per the usual, it's disregarded

When things were simple, many years ago, football was almost as popular as it is now. There were also many baseball, basketball, hockey fans -- not as many today, at least not as much passion.

Times were so much easier many years ago. The Boys were a team that won, and not only, were exciting to watch. Plus there were not as many teams so a large part of the country did not watch their own "home team". As the Boys continued to win in the early '90's, America's team came to being. And it was real.

But things changed. More teams came into being. The Boys started to lose. It was pretty simple. The Boys were America's team as late as the late '90's. Now things are different.

I am an example of that. And no, I am not a fair weather fan. A season ticket holder of the Pats for 30 years. So while you were winning in the early '90's, we were going 1-15. So as a former Boys fan, I started going to the Patriot games. I became a fan. Big one. 1-15, what who cares. We had the most fun in those early days when times were simple -- and we lost just about every week.

A fan wants to root for their home team. Period. And there are lots of teams. And may I add, I think most are loyal to the core. Flat out loyal. Hey, try a Brown fan. Dog pound already. A die-hard fan. I respect that.

So, all this being said, I say, the days of America's team are over. Long over. Will there be fans -- not really fans -- that just go with the winner. Sure, and would you want them as your fan. NOT.

As far as the Saints, I think after what that city went through it is flat out great what is happening to their football team. Just flat out great. Would I like to see them win the Bowl, sure. Straight out SURE.

What you say, are you not a Pats fan. Yes, but we should not have even gotten as far as we have. I have a feeling, a good one, next year is ours. That being said, I want the Saints to win.

Are they America's team, no. Are the Boys, no. Is anyone, no. You are a fan of a team, even those teams at the bottom. A fan of YOUR team.

Would be nice to see a Saints win though. How bout Bush. Gee, the Texans were flat out dumb to pass on that guy.

Off.

Try again, buddy. You can talk all the home team stuff you want, but the Dallas Cowboys have more fans than any other team. Period. The ratings do not lie. We also have more haters than any other team. Period. Winning is only part of it. Case in point, I don't see much Patriots attire these days, but I see Cowboys jerseys and caps everywhere I go. See, we don't even have to win to get love (and hate). The Dallas Cowboys: either you love 'em or you hate 'em, but everybody cares one way or the other. That is what being America's Team is all about. Remember that.

While I understand your point, Patsfan. I think it get's a bit more deeper than just mere fan support. The Cowboys, even when they are down, remains a team that is talked about in the media and the most opportune time to laugh at when we are struggling. You cannot find a team that is more loved, hated, and marketed than the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL. Everybody loves to hate us or has an opinion of us. Even teams we do not have a history of playing consistently hates us. Visit various team forums and you will see threads loving that Romo bobbled the snap. But I bet you they pulled in high ratings for that game as well. We pulled in the highest ratings this year for just about every primetime game this season and will set new records again next year.

Also, jealousy comes in as well. Fans of teams love when the Cowboys are down but dread when they are back on top. They know the Cowboys will once again seriously contend for multiple superbowls and win them after having superb seasons like we have had the majority of the franchise history.

You will see Cowboy fans in every city you go to in America. You will see jerseys and you will see hats. Especially here in the DC-Bmore area. You will also see many people hating the Cowboys in each of those cities. I don't think any team brings out the best or worse of an NFL fan better than just mentioning, the Dallas Cowboys.

The only team out of all American Sports that trumps us, imo, are the New York Yankees. That's why I don't hate the Yankees. They are similar to us Cowboy fans.:laugh2:

Perhaps Boyz, you should take a drive to New England. Tell me how many Cowboy jerseys you see.

That is all the answer I need.

Now take a drive to New Orleans, now take a drive to Chicago, now take a drive to Indy.

Nuff said. You are living in the past. Sorry.

I don't know about New England. But I know I have seen many Cowboy jerseys in New Orleans and Chicago. They may not be wearing them now, but trust, there are numerous Cowboy fans there. I'm sure if San Diego won last week, you would be saying, take a drive to San Diego. To which we would reply, see last year's opener where there was just as many Cowboy fans in San Diego's stadium as Charger fans.

Wrong. Do a google search on WHEN Dallas became America's Team.

Yeah right LOL... That franchise probably wasnt offering that until as recently as the last 10 years. LOL Whatever.... you are such a lifelong Pats fan.... oh my...

You try to show how much a fan you are by going back and telling of how you just stuck with them no matter what... Yeah you left the Cowboys to root for 1-15 team.... right?!?!?

Alot of fans root for out of state teams. This is not even close to being accurate.

Clearly you are a troll. Blowing the Pats horn and trying to come off as such a die hard and intelligent person. You are so transparent. All can see through you. So you got your rocks off by stating your opinion that the days of the Cowboys being America's Team are over. Feel better? Its amazing... all the winning the Pats have done in the last 6-7 years and you STILL feel the need to validate it by coming in here.... Pats are a good team and they win... but they will NEVER be the Dallas Cowboys. That bothers you... GOOD!

There is something wrong with you. Seriously. Football is not everything for New Orleans. Would it be great if they won for Lousianna... sure... but... lets say Pats and Saints are in SB and there is 30 seconds left and Brady needs a TD from the Saints 10 yardline to win the game.... you are gonna hope they dont make it.... yeah right!!!! You are full of it....

All Dallas has to do is finish what they have started and continue to win... once we get back to prominance.... the America's Team will be there waiting for us.... enjoy!

Off.
This is a well thought out post, but I am going to disagree with you on your premise there.

The Dallas Cowboys were given that nickname in 1979. In between then and the late 90's (you selected that time frame, not me) we endured many losing seasons. We had our own 1-15 season in 1989.

America's Team as a nickname has never been about winning. It has always been about the allure, the sex appeal, and all around popularity. The nickname came to us in 1979. We didn't win it all in 1979. That was the Steelers. So it didn't begin about winning. It hasn't stayed because of winning.

The Dallas Cowboys are America's Team. It offends some fans of other teams who aren't mature enough to worry about something other than a nickname. Either they will get over it, or they won't. I could care less whether they do or don't.

Make no mistake about it though, that moniker belongs to us, and no one else is welcome to it. Some may try to borrow it, but it will always apply to the Cowboys.

Well, we can agree to disagree.

When I first moved to NE in the late '60's, as far as football, there were Giant fans. And then Giant fans, and then Giant fans.

Then we got the Pats. There were few fans, I was one, but always the Giant fans. Even the old timers are still Giant fans. And that is OK.

NE was always a baseball area first, then a basketball area, then a hockey area, and then a football area. But times are a changing. Sure, it has a lot to do to with the success of the team. But we are now a football - or baseball area first. Hard to say which is first. You go to a Pats game, and the Sox score is always on the board.

I don't live in NE full time now, most of my time in Florida. But I still keep my Pats tickets because there is appx. a 40 year waiting list for season tickets. I will pass them down to my family.

But I have traveled around the country, lived around the country. Trust me, there is no America's team. Even in areas without a pro team, college football rules.

And why would it bother you if this was not the case??? You SHOULD root for your home team.

I say, Denver, San Diego (great following), Browns, and even in Florida, I cannot believe the support for the local team, the Bucs. Unbelivable support, and I would not have it otherwise.

So believe what you will, there are still some old timers that remember the old America's team -- but they are fading. As it should be.

Still like to see the Saints win. America's team, nah. Sorry.
